Treatment and monitoring of a high-density population of bare-nosed wombats for sarcoptic mange.

Sarcoptes scabiei causes a fatal disease (mange) in bare-nosed wombats (BNWs) (Vombatus ursinus) across their range and can threaten isolated populations with extinction. Repeated dosing of moxidectin (Cydectin®) at a dosage rate of 0.5 mg/kg is effective at treating individual BNWs but is difficult to administer on a population basis where treatment success has varied. This paper documents the temporary (~20 month) eradication of mange from a semi-isolated population of BNWs using repeated dosing of Cydectin® administered by burrow flaps. Treated BNWs were marked with nontoxic paint and selec

Neurological Surgery Manpower Training and Density in Islamic Republic of Iran: A Population Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Significant disparities in worldwide neurosurgical training and workforce distribution are prominent primarily in low-income and middle-income countries. Although Iran is considered a lower middle-income country, neurosurgical density and distribution in Iran has surpassed the recommended ratio of 1 neurosurgeon for every 100 000 population. The objective was to determine neurological surgery density and distribution in Iran and the factors significant in the relative success in training and allocation of neurosurgeons in Iran. METHODS: Review of PubMed and administ

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) as an indicator for alcohol use in a psychiatrically ill population.

AIMS: To examine the cross sectional and longitudinal associations between the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise (AUDIT-C) and differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in a psychiatrically ill population. METHODS: Retrospective observational study using electronic health record data from a large healthcare system, of patients hospitalized for a mental health/substance use disorder (MH/SUD) from 1 July 2016 to 31 May 2023, who had a proximal AUDIT-C and HDL (N = 15 915) and the subset who had a repeat AUDIT-C and HDL 1 year later (N = 2915). Cooperation in public goods game does not require assortment and depends on population density.

The threshold public goods game is one of the best-known models of non-linear public goods dilemmas. Cooperators and defectors typically coexist in this game when the population is assumed to follow the so-called structured deme model. In this article, we develop a dynamical model of a general N-player game in which there is no deme structure: Individuals interact with randomly chosen neighbours and selection occurs between randomly chosen pairs of individuals. We show that in the deterministic limit, the dynamics in this model leads to the same replicator dynamics as in the structured deme mo

How population control of pests is modulated by density dependence: The perspective of genetic biocontrol.

Managing pest species relies critically on mechanisms that regulate population dynamics, particularly those factors that change with population size. These density-dependent factors can help or hinder control efforts and are especially relevant considering recent advances in genetic techniques that allow for precise manipulation of the timing and sex-specificity of a control. Despite this importance, density dependence is often poorly characterized owing to limited data and an incomplete understanding of developmental ecology. To address this issue, we construct and analyze a mathematical mode

Body Mass Index and Mammographic Density in a Multiracial and Multiethnic Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density (MD) is strongly associated with breast cancer risk. We examined whether body mass index (BMI) partially explains racial and ethnic variation in MD. METHODS: We used multivariable Poisson regression to estimate associations between BMI and binary MD [Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System (BI-RADS) A&B versus BI-RADS C&D] among 160,804 women in the Utah mammography cohort. We estimated associations overall and within racial and ethnic subgroups and calculated population attributable risk percents (PAR%). RESULTS: We observed the lowest BMI and highest M

The fitness effects of a point mutation in Escherichia coli change with founding population density.

Although intraspecific competition plays a seminal role in organismal evolution, little is known about the fitness effects of mutations at different population densities. We identified a point mutation in the cyclic AMP receptor protein (CRP) gene in Escherichia coli that confers significantly higher fitness than the wildtype at low founding population density, but significantly lower fitness at high founding density. Because CRP is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of nearly 500 genes, we compared global gene expression profiles of the mutant and wildtype strains. This muta

The effect of DISC1 on regional gray matter density of schizophrenia in Han Chinese population.

Schizophrenia is thought to arise in part from abnormal gray matter (GM), which are partly shared by the relatives of the probands. DISC1 is one of the most promising susceptibility genes of schizophrenia and a SNP rs821597 (A) in the gene was associated with schizophrenia in Han Chinese population. In this study, 61 healthy controls and 72 with schizophrenic patients were genotyped at rs821597, and underwent T1-weighted MRI for the density of GM. The results showed that the risk allele (A) carriers had higher GM density in regional left parahippocampal gyrus and right orbitofrontal cortex in

Efficacy of alendronate in the treatment of low bone density in the pediatric and young adult population.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric osteoporosis is uncommon but can result in painful and debilitating insufficiency fractures. Treatment options for osteoporosis in children are few. Bisphosphonate therapy for children has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States, but its use in that population has been increasing. Randomized controlled studies have not been done because of the small subject pool and the difficulty in randomizing a child with an insufficiency fracture to a placebo arm of a study. This retrospective case-control study of a population of children with

The association of common polymorphisms in the QPCT gene with bone mineral density in the Chinese population.

Evidence of the linkage of chromosome 2p to bone mineral density (BMD) has previously been reported in multiple populations. However, the identification of the BMD quantitative trait loci (QTL) gene at chromosome 2p remains a challenge. We performed a gene-wide and tag single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based association study of four positional and functional candidate genes (CALM2, CYP1B1, QPCT, and POMC) in a sample of 1,243 cases and matched controls. Thirteen HapMap tag SNPs were selected and genotyped by using the high-throughput Sequenom genotyping platform. Binary logistic regression

[Population density of chigger mites, the vector of tsutsugamushi disease in Chollanam-do, Korea].

The geographical distribution and population density of rodents and chigger mites at six localities of Chollanam-do were investigated from October to December in 1993. Among total 142 field rodents collected by the modified Chemla wooden traps, 131 rodents were Apodemus agrarius (92.3%) and 11 were Crocidura lasiura (7.7%). Out of 142 field rodents, 92 were parasitized by chiggers, showing 69.0% of the infestation rate and 74.2 of the chigger index. Infestation rate and chigger index of A. agrarius and C. lasiura were 73.3%, 80.4 and 18.2%, 0.5, respectively. From the trapped field rodents, 10

Seasonal population densities of snails transmitting urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in Lusaka, Zambia.

The two molluscan intermediate hosts of S. haematobium schistosomiasis: Bulinus africanus and Bulinus globosus, were found most commonly in habitats that retained water for a substantial part of the year rather than in temporary rain-filled pools. Biomphalaria pfeifferi which transmits S. mansoni were found principally in streams and impoundments like dams but scarce in rivers. In a permanent habitat, the peak density of snails was between the warm, dry months of August and September while in a temporary habitat B. (Physopsis) sp. were most abundant towards the end of the rainy season in March

Population Density and Root Colonization of AM Fungi in the Mycorrhizosphere of Semiarid Plant Species.

The ecological role of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in subtropical semiarid habitats is yet unexplored. Five subtropical semiarid plant species-Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) Wild., Borassus flabellifer L., Eucalyptus globulus Labill, Euphorbia antiquorum L., and Vachellia leucophloea (Roxb.)-collected from the Pudukkottai district of south India were used in this study to examine the diversity, abundance, and root colonization of AMF. The study aims to determine the mycorrhizal status of these host plants, investigate the connection between root colonization and AMF spore quantity, and est

Population density and timing of breeding mediate effects of early life conditions on recruitment.

Identifying the factors driving juvenile recruitment is crucial for predicting the response of populations to environmental change. Importantly, how early life conditions carry over to influence recruitment may be highly dependent on the context in which they occur. For example, the effects of challenging early life conditions may be more pronounced under high densities or when young are born late in the season. We examined the ecological factors influencing local recruitment spanning three decades in Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) breeding on Kent Island, NB, Canada. The effect

The Influence of the Socioeconomic Status and the Density of the Population on the Outcome After Peripheral Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic status (SES) and living in a rural environment are associated with poorer health and a higher number of amputations among the population at large. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of low SES and of the degree of urbanization on the short-term and long-term results of patients after revascularization for peripheral artery disease. METHODS: An observational retrospective follow-up study of 770 patients operated on for peripheral artery disease at three university centers in north-western Spain from January 2015 to December 2016. The events st

Assessment of the Role of IQ in Associations Between Population Density and Deprivation and Nonaffective Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Being born or raised in more densely populated or deprived areas is associated with increased risk of nonaffective psychosis in adulthood, but few studies to date have examined the role of general cognitive ability in these associations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether lower IQ contributed to the association between population density or deprivation and nonaffective psychosis (mediation) and whether these associations were stronger in people with lower IQ (effect modification). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study evaluated a population-based sample

Population densities predict forebrain size variation in the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus.

The 'social brain hypothesis' proposes a causal link between social complexity and either brain size or the size of key brain parts known to be involved in cognitive processing and decision-making. While previous work has focused on comparisons between species, how social complexity affects plasticity in brain morphology at the intraspecific level remains mostly unexplored. A suitable study model is the mutualist 'cleaner' fish Labroides dimidiatus, a species that removes ectoparasites from a variety of 'client' fishes in iterative social interactions. Here, we report a positive relationship b

Epizootic of sarcoptic mange in raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in relation to population density.

To examine outbreaks of mange in raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) with respect to population density, we analyzed camera trap videos, and isolated mites from raccoon dog carcasses. In a camera trapping survey, we categorized the skin condition of raccoon dogs, and used a number of independent videos to calculate the relative abundance index (RAI). The RAI of raccoon dogs with alopecia increased following an increase in the RAI of those without alopecia. Among 27 raccoon dog carcasses, 12 showed mange-compatible skin lesions. Sarcoptes scabiei was isolated from 11 of these raccoon dogs,

The relationship between low bone mineral density and Parkinson's disease in a Korean population.

There have been few studies concerning osteoporosis in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), even though patients with PD have a high incidence of falls. Using a Korean population, we investigated the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and PD. A total of 107 patients with PD were compared with age-matched and sex-matched normal controls. Using the Hoehn & Yahr staging system, we classified the patients with PD into three subgroups. Parts II and III of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale were administered to evaluate the relationship between the severity of PD and BMD. In
