Relation of age with symptom severity and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of age with symptom severity and quality of life (QOL) in patients with fibromyalgia, and to compare physical and mental health of our female patients with those of the US female general population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 978 patients with fibromyalgia from May 1, 2001 through April 30, 2004, and divided them into age groups of young (≤39 years), middle-aged (40-59 years), and older (≥60 years). They completed the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and the Short Form-36 Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36). Standardized SF-36 physical and mental heal

Rethinking seasonal COVID-19 vaccination in the endemic era: summer timing, eligibility, and frequency in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: With a recent shift towards summer seasonal predominance of COVID-19 across much of the US, debate continues over optimal COVID-19 vaccination strategies regarding timing (including summer vaccination), eligibility, and dosing frequency. We evaluated the population-level impact of alternative vaccine strategies to inform US and state vaccine policy. OBJECTIVE: To compare reductions in COVID-19 hospitalizations under different vaccination timing, eligibility, and dosing frequency. DESIGN: Decision analytical model using a stochastic individual-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmissio

Comparison of US population and live birth rates with poison exposures reported to the National Poison Data System (NPDS): children ages 0-5 years from 2000 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of poison control center data has provided an important public health surveillance tool. Previous work has identified the population with the greatest risk of poisoning as children of < 6 years. It follows that the size of the population at highest risk should be an important driver/factor of poison center volume. Therefore, one would expect population changes to be reflected in corresponding National Poison Data system (NPDS) call volume changes. We examined this relationship. METHOD: This was a retrospective comparison of young children's poison exposures reported to

Demographic differences in estimated blood donor eligibility prevalence in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of blood donor eligibility factors has a major impact on the availability of blood donors and thus the blood supply in the United States. The prevalence of these factors may differ between demographic groups and thus help explain the differences in blood donation rates. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The study population (18-69 years old who were African American [AA], white, or Hispanic) was 185,073,489. Forty eligibility factors determined by US Food and Drug Administration's Code of Federal Regulations and AABB Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services were u

Comparison of KN012, a denosumab biosimilar, versus reference denosumab in Chinese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis: efficacy, safety, and population pharmacokinetics in a 12-month phase III study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, bone turnover markers, population pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity profiles of KN012 compared to US reference denosumab (US-denosumab) in Chinese postmenopausal osteoporotic patients. METHODS: This 12-month, double-blind, randomized, active-controlled Phase III study enrolled 279 participants who were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 60 mg of KN012 or US-denosumab subcutaneously at months 0 and 6. The primary endpoint was the mean percent change in lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) from baseline at Month 12. Efficacy equivalence

The prevalence of HLA-B27 in the US: data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out the first large-scale population study of the prevalence of HLA-B27 in the US, which is needed for public health planning purposes because of recent improvements in medical therapy and diagnostic testing for ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: The national prevalence of HLA-B27 was determined as part of the 2009 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a cross-sectional survey monitoring the health and nutritional status of the US civilian, noninstitutionalized population. DNA polymerase chain reaction analysis was conducted in samples from 2,320

Prevalence, knowledge and care patterns for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in United States minority populations.

BACKGROUND: While there is evidence of ethnic variation in the prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, few population-based studies examine GERD symptom prevalence amongst the growing Hispanic minority in the US as well as Asians in the West. AIM: To examine the prevalence, awareness and care patterns for GERD across different ethnic groups. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional survey was fielded in English, Chinese and Spanish that assessed self-reported GERD prevalence, awareness and care patterns in four ethnic groups (Caucasian, African American, Asian, H

A screening program to test and treat for Helicobacter pylori infection: Cost-utility analysis by age, sex and ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends all countries consider screening for H. pylori to prevent gastric cancer. We therefore aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a H. pylori serology-based screening program in New Zealand, a country that includes population groups with relatively high gastric cancer rates. METHODS: A Markov model was developed using life-tables and morbidity data from a national burden of disease study. The modelled screening program reduced the incidence of non-cardia gastric cancer attributable to H. pylori, if infection was identified by serology scre

Comparison of Racial and Ethnic Mortality Disparities among Post-9/11 Veterans with and without Traumatic Brain Injury to the Total U.S. Adult Population.

INTRODUCTION: The extent of racial/ethnic disparities and whether they are attenuated in the Veteran population compared to the total US population is not well understood. We aimed to assess racial/ethnic mortality disparities from all-cause, cardiovascular (CVD) and cancer among post-9/11 military Veterans with and without exposure to TBI, compared to the total US population. METHODS: This cohort study included 2,502,101 US military Veterans (18,932,083 person-years) who served after 09/11/2001 with 3 or more years of care in the Military Health System (MHS); or had 3 or more years of care i

Trends of liver cell carcinoma mortality in the United States by demographics and geography.

BACKGROUND: Liver cancer is a complex disease that presents many challenges in its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. It's mortality rate in the United States is a significant and warrants attention. OBJECTIVE: To assess the trend of mortality rate due to HCC in the US from 1999 to 2020 by demographic groups for differences in trend of mortality. METHODS: We used the CDC wonder database to collect mortality rate data due to HCC as a multiple cause of death in the US from 1999 to 2020 by sex, race, age, and state of residence. The SEER Joinpoint program was used to calculate trends, define

Age-Standardized Mortality of Persons on Probation, in Jail, or in State Prison and the General Population, 2001-2012.

OBJECTIVES: The number of adults in the United States being held on probation-persons convicted of crimes and serving their sentence in the community rather than in a correctional facility-approached 4 million at the end of 2016 and continues to grow, yet little is known about the health and well-being of this population. We compared the standardized mortality ratios of persons on probation in the United States with persons in jail, persons in state prison, and the general US population. METHODS: We used administrative data from 2001-2012 from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Centers

Compounders of the COVID crisis: the "perfect storm".

Cultural and societal factors have placed some demographic, racial, and ethnic groups at increased risk of contracting and dying from coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This commentary addresses these population disparities and other potential modulators that negatively impact associated health outcomes in the US population, with specific reference to the need for greater self-responsibility.

Health-related quality of life associated with irritable bowel syndrome: comparison with other chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rapidly growing body of literature on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). placing the results in a context that is meaningful to clinicians and patients is often overlooked. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to quantify the impact of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) on HRQoL by comparing the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) scores of IBS patients with normative US data and with the scores of patients having other chronic gastrointestinal (GI) and non-GI disorders. METHODS: Two IBS reference groups were identified from the published literatu

Patient attitudes and understanding about biosimilars: an international cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the levels of awareness, usage, and knowledge of biosimilars among patients, caregivers, and the general population in the US and the European Union; perceptions of biosimilars compared to originator biologics; perceived benefits and drawbacks of clinical trials; and whether advocacy groups impact patients' willingness to try a biosimilar. METHODS: An international survey was conducted which contained up to 56 closed-ended (requiring yes/no or ranking answers) and open-ended questions, depending on the population assigned. The survey was divided into distinct sections

Examining the gastric cancer survival gap between Asians and whites in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Globally, Asian countries bear a disproportionate gastric cancer burden. Asian Americans, the fastest growing minority population in the US, have higher gastric cancer survival than non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) despite higher incidence. Benefitting from uniform cancer registry standards within the US, we examine for the first time the heterogeneity in the Asian American population, which may elucidate the causes of these disparities. METHODS: SEER gastric cancer data from 2000 to 2012 were used to calculate 5-year survival estimates for NHWs and the six largest Asian ethnicities. Mu

ABO and RhD blood group antigen frequencies in patients and blood donors: Implications for the U.S. blood supply.

BACKGROUND: ABO/Rh blood groups play a pivotal role in the practice of transfusion medicine. To our knowledge, there have been no large studies reporting these blood group antigen frequencies in the United States (US) since 2004, and the most recent large study only reported antigen frequencies for donors, not patients. We sought to determine and compare the ABO/RhD antigen frequencies in patient and donor populations. METHODS: In this multi-center retrospective cohort study, five California academic medical centers and one national blood center reviewed blood group and demographic data from

Time Since Infection and Risks of Future Disease for Individuals with Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Risk of tuberculosis (TB) declines over time since Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, but progression to clinical disease is still possible decades later. In the United States, most TB cases result from the progression of latent TB infection acquired over 2 years ago. METHODS: We synthesized evidence on TB natural history and incidence trends using a transmission-dynamic model. For the 2020 US population, we estimated average time since infection and annual, cumulative, and remaining lifetime risks of progression to TB, by nativity and age. RESULTS: For a newly infected adult

Cross-cultural network structures of social anxiety, body dysmorphic, and major depressive disorder symptoms in individualistic vs. collectivistic societies: A comparison between American, German, and Japanese populations.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid, which may be influenced by cultural variables associated with individualism vs. collectivism with particular emphasis on shame. This study investigated the network structures comprising symptoms of SAD, BDD, MDD, and shame across three countries typically associated with either a high tendency of collectivism (Japan), a high tendency of individualism (USA), or in between (Germany). Participants included 319 Japanese, 440 US Americans, and 308 Germans from the general populati
