Stratification of a Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Population Based on Their Response to Human Growth Hormone and Insulin-like Growth Factor.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), caused by pathogenic variants in the SHANK3 gene or 22q13 deletions, is characterized by intellectual disability, autistic features, developmental delays, and neonatal hypotonia. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and human growth hormone (hGH) have been shown to reverse neurobehavioral deficits in PMS. We assessed the metabolic profiling of 48 individuals with PMS and 50 controls and determined subpopulations by taking the top and bottom 25% of responders to hGH and IGF-1. A distinct metabolic profile for individuals with PMS showed a reduced ability to metab

[Determination of growth hormone binding protein in a normal population and in subjects with short stature due to growth hormone resistance].

With the procedure which uses gel-filtration and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) the authors measured the GH-binding proteins in 96 healthy subjects aged 6 months to 40 years. In the blood 45% of the GH is bound to the BP. The diagnosis was confirmed by our method in 13 patients with Laron type dwarfism and in four patients the GH receptor defect had been proved. The parents, the brothers and sisters showed significantly lower GH-BP II (principal GH-BP) levels. Possible regulation of GH-binding proteins in human plasma was examined. Eight children with isolated GH deficiency had a v

How optimal control of cellular cost shapes population-level tumor growth dynamics.

Tumor progression is often modeled as a passive response to external therapy or immune pressure, but tumor populations may also exhibit population-level regulation of proliferation and apoptosis. We develop a continuous-time Markov decision framework in which a controlled birth--death process represents a tumor population modulating the balance between proliferation and susceptibility to apoptosis in the presence of extrinsic death pressure. We examine threshold and quadratic costs, an unbounded linear reward, and constrained linear and quadratic formulations to determine how objective structu

Trophoblast Side-Population Markers are Dysregulated in Preeclampsia and Fetal Growth Restriction.

Dysregulated progenitor cell populations may contribute to poor placental development and placental insufficiency pathogenesis. Side-population cells possess progenitor properties. Recent human trophoblast side-population isolation identified enrichment of 8 specific genes (CXCL8, ELL2, GATA6, HK2, HLA-DPB1, INTS6, SERPINE3 and UPP1) (Gamage et al. 2020, Stem Cell Rev Rep). We characterised these trophoblast side-population markers in human placenta and in placental insufficiency disorders: preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction (FGR). Trophoblast side-population markers localised to mononu

Home Nasogastric Feeds: Feeding Status and Growth Outcomes in a Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is a safe method for providing nutrition to children with chronic diseases. Advantages of HEN include shorter hospitalizations, lower cost, and decreased risk of malnutrition-associated complications. Follow-up after hospital discharge on HEN is limited. The purpose of this study was to look at children discharged on nasogastric (NG) feeds to assess follow-up feeding status and impact on growth. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of pediatric patients discharged from Mount Sinai Medical Center on NG feeds between January 2010 and March

Antibodies that promote thyroid growth. A distinct population of thyroid-stimulating autoantibodies.

We used a strain of differentiated rat-thyroid cells in continuous culture (the FRTL-5 strain) to detect the presence of growth-promoting antibodies in serum samples from patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. We found that IgG preparations from 17 of 20 patients (85 per cent) with active Graves' disease and two of five patients (40 per cent) with Hashimoto's thyroiditis could augment thyroid-cell growth. In parallel with IgG-induced elevations in intracellular cyclic AMP levels in the same cell line, all 20 of the patients with active Graves' disease had thyroid-stimulatory antibodies. Pat

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Growth Rate in the Spanish Population.

Objective: The risk of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) rupture is associated with the aneurysm size and growth rate. This study aims to provide a global description of growth rates per intervals of AAA diameter size for individuals in the Spanish population, to understand possible comorbidities associated with growth rate variability, and to assess practitioners on safe follow-up visits for AAA patients. Methods: We present the Triple-A Barcelona Study (TABS), a new hospital-based longitudinal study recruiting consecutive individuals with AAAs in Barcelona. So far, 469 individuals with measure

Giardiasis in pediatric populations: A case series highlighting nutritional and growth impacts.

Giardiasis, a common cause of parasitic diarrhea, is caused by the protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia (Giardia intestinalis or Giardia duodenalis). This intestinal flagellate protozoan is prevalent among children worldwide and is a significant source of traveller's diarrhea. It is estimated that there are about 2.5 million cases of giardiasis-related diarrhea and nutritional deficits in children every year, with the majority occurring in developing countries. Since 2004, the World Health Organization has classified it as one of the neglected tropical diseases. Those most at risk for complicati

Polyploidy and growth-defense tradeoffs in natural populations of western quaking Aspen.

Polyploidy, the expression of more than two sets of chromosomes, is common in plants, and is thought to influence plant trait expression and drive plant species evolution. The degree to which polyploidy influences interactions among physiological processes such as growth and defense in natural populations through its effect on phenotypic variability is poorly understood. We link broad plant genotypic features (including polyploidy) to phenotypic expression of growth and chemical defense in natural populations of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) to examine patterns in resource allocation tha

Tumor growth rate as a prognostic factor of acral melanoma in a Korean population.

Rapid growth of cutaneous melanoma is associated with aggressive histopathologic features and poor prognosis. However, the impact of growth rate (GR) in acral melanoma (AM) remains largely unknown. We performed this study to identify the impact of GR on lymph node metastasis and survival in AM.We analyzed cases of invasive AM diagnosed at our institution between 1998 and 2017. We investigated the impact of GR on the prognosis of AM.A total of 126 cases of invasive AM were included. Log (GR) was significant associated with lymph node metastasis in the univariate logistic regression analysis (P =

[Population growth and global warming: impacts on tsetse and trypanosomoses in West Africa].

Demographic evolution, climatic change and economical development that happened in West Africa during the XXth century had a lot of consequences on human settlement and landscape. These changes have in turn an impact on the pathogenic system of human and animal trypanosomoses. Since last century, the northern tsetse distribution limit has shifted towards the south, probably due to a decrease in rainfall combined to the impact of human pressure. Sleeping sickness (SS) foci have also shifted from the savannah areas (where there is no more SS) to the forest and mangrove areas of West Africa, but

Risk factors of intrauterine growth retardation: a study of an urban population in Poland.

The main objective of the study was to examine the role of selected socio-occupational factors on the development of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) in the urban population of Lódź, Poland. An epidemiological model of the case-control study was employed. Both the cases and controls were recruited from the female population covered by obstetric services in district hospitals during 1 January-30 June 1992. A group of cases included 92 females who delivered IUGR children, the control group-438 mothers of term born eutrophic babies. The presence of the relationship between IUGR manifestatio

Ambient air pollution and fetal growth restriction: Physician diagnosis of fetal growth restriction versus population-based small-for-gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution may affect fetal growth restriction (FGR) through several mechanisms. However, prior studies of air pollution and small-for-gestational age (SGA), a common proxy for FGR, have reported inconsistent findings. OBJECTIVE: We assessed air pollution in relation to physician-diagnosed FGR and population-based SGA in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Consecutive Pregnancy Study (2002-2010). METHODS: Among 50,005 women (112,203 singleton births), FGR was captured from medical records and ICD-9 codes, and SGA
