I.R. spectrophotometry has been applied in emergency toxicological analyses. Poisons and drugs are extracted into chloroform, potassium bromide is added to the extract and the solvent evaporated. Potassium bromide discs are prepared by compression and scanned in an I.R. spectrophotometer. A data bank of standard spectra has been prepared and computerized comparison of the spectral data of the sample extract with those of authentic compounds allows the identification of toxic agents in 'real time'.

A procedure for benzylic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling under microwave conditions has been developed. These conditions allowed for heterocyclic compounds to be coupled. Optimum conditions found were Pd(OAc)(2), JohnPhos as the catalyst and ligand, potassium carbonate as base, and DMF as the solvent. Using these conditions, a library of structurally diverse compounds was synthesized.

The effects of ketamine, etomidate, alphaxalone and alphadolone acetate on nodal sodium and potassium currents of frog myelinated nerve fibre have been examined. A Chan-Lam-type C-S coupling reaction using sodium aryl sulfinates has been developed to provide diaryl thioethers in up to 92% yields in the presence of a copper catalyst and potassium sulfite. Both electron-rich and electron-poor sodium aryl sulfinates and diverse organoboron compounds were tolerated for the synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl thioethers and dithioethers. The mechanistic study suggested that potassium sulfite was involved in the deoxygenation of sulfinate through a radical process.

Compounds that contain the gem-difluoroalkene motifs are of particular interest to the pharmaceutical industry, yet remain a challenge to synthesize. Herein, we report a palladium-catalyzed gem-difluorovinylation of potassium benzyltrifluoroborates with 2,2-difluoroethenyl tosylates via sp3-sp2 cross-couplings, which offers a facile and mild alternative to reported procedures for the synthesis of gem-difluorovinyl compounds in good to excellent yields.

In recent years, multicomponent reactions with inorganic and organic sulfur compounds as one of reactants have achieved a remarkable development.
