Intermittent oral administration of potassium iodide solution for the correction of iodine deficiency.

Iodized salt and iodized oil are the main methods used to prevent iodine deficiency, but sometimes alternative approaches are needed. We tested the efficacy of various regimens for the intermittent administration of potassium iodide in Hwedza, Zimbabwe, an area of known severe iodine deficiency. We divided 304 schoolchildren aged 7-13 y into five equal groups that received iodine as a 10% solution of potassium iodide as follows: 8.7 mg every 2 wk (group A), 29.7 mg every month (group B), 148.2 mg every 3 mo (group C), 382 mg every 6 mo (group D), or 993 mg once (group E). The follow-up period …

Development of a formulation of potassium iodide tablets as an antidote against nuclear incidents.

OBJECTIVES: Potassium iodide (KI) is a treatment to neutralize radioactive agents that could be inhaled or ingested in nuclear incidents. The inorganic salt KI constitutes a source of iodine, which in the body acts by accumulating in the thyroid gland, producing its saturation, and thus preventing the fixation of radioactive iodine species. In Spain, the Military Defence Pharmacy Centre (CEMILFARDEF) was challenged to develop this antidote to be distributed among the population surrounding nuclear power plants, in only one new solid pharmaceutical form for oral administration, in order to repl…

Anticandidal effect of multiple sessions of erythrosine and potassium iodide-mediated photodynamic therapy.

BACKGROUND: Erythrosine+potassium iodide-mediated photodynamic therapy has shown an anticandidal effect. Single session, however, has inadequate fungal inhibition. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the effects of multiple aPDT sessions on Candida albicans inhibition and singlet oxygen formation. METHODS: 220 μM erythrosine +/-100 mM potassium iodide was applied to C. albicans biofilms for 1 min prior to irradiation at 530±10 nm using a 250 mW/cm2 light-emitting diode. Negative and positive controls were phosphate buffer saline and nystatin, respectively. Single, double and triple irradiation s…

Clinical Studies on Potassium Iodide-induced Painless Thyroiditis in 11 Graves' Disease Patients.

Objective Painless thyroiditis (PT) is characterized by transient hyperthyroidism with a low 99mTc uptake. We herein describe 11 cases of PT that occurred during treatment with potassium iodide (KI) for Graves' disease (GD). Methods From August 2016 to December 2018, 11 women with GD who developed PT during treatment with KI were enrolled. Of these patients, 10 discontinued antithyroid drug (ATD) because of side effects and began KI, and 1 patient switched from thiamazole to KI because she was planning a pregnancy. The mean patient age was 40.1 years old. Thyroid function tests, thyroid autoan…

Successful therapy of refractory erythema nodosum associated with Crohn's disease using potassium iodide.

Erythema nodosum is a common extraintestinal manifestation of Crohn's disease. While mild skin involvement often responds to conservative management, severe or refractory cases may require systemic corticosteroid or immunosuppressive therapy. This report describes successful treatment of severe, refractory erythema nodosum associated with Crohn's colitis using oral potassium iodide. While the mechanism of action of this agent is poorly understood, it appears to be an effective and nontoxic therapy for Crohn's-related erythema nodosum and warrants further evaluation in a placebo controlled tria…

Use of adjunctive potassium iodide after radioactive iodine (131I) treatment of Graves' hyperthyroidism.

One hundred and nineteen patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism who were treated with 131I alone or 131I followed by potassium iodide (131I + KI) were studied retrospectively. Patients in both groups who required only a single dose of 131I for successful treatment of hyperthyroidism had similar age, gland size, 24-h radioactive iodine uptake, pretreatment serum T4 concentrations, and radioactive iodine treatment dose. Seven weeks after 131I, mean serum T4 concentrations were 12.3 +/- 6.1 micrograms/dl (mean +/- SD) in patients who received 131I alone and 8.0 +/- 3.9 micrograms/dl in patients wh…

[Neonatal hypothyroidism induced by the ingestion of potassium iodide during pregnancy (author's transl)].

This concerns a case of an infant born with goiter and hypothyroidism whose mother had taken potassium iodide during pregnancy in the form of a respiratory eupneic syrup. Laboratory tests revealed the etiology of the goiter by demonstrating that it concerned a transitory, acquired hormone production disturbance. The tests gave an indication of the course of the condition, leading to substitute hormone therapy being stopped after six weeks. The euthyroidism was then checked on two occastions.

Effects of potassium iodide in concentrations of TSH, tT3 and tT4 in serum of subjects with sporotrichosis.

The saturated potassium iodide solution (SSKI) as treatment for sporotrichosis may cause hypothyroidism by suppressing the synthesis of thyroid hormones (tT3 and tT4 ) and the iodine excess could lead to thyrotoxicosis. Evaluating the changes in serum levels of TSH, tT3 and tT4 in euthyroid patients with sporotrichosis treated with SSKI. For the selection of euthyroid patients, TSH, tT3 and tT4 concentrations were measured for those adults and children diagnosed with sporotrichosis. Each paediatric patient was administered SSKI orally in increasing doses of 2-20 drops/3 times/day and 4-40 drop…

Effect of immunization and potassium iodide on polymorphonuclear leukocyte chemiluminescence in experimental murine sporotrichosis.

This study was undertaken to examine the effects of immunization with Sporothrix schenckii and oral potassium iodide (KJ) administration on the chemiluminescence (CL) response of mouse polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in experimental murine sporotrichosis. When N-formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine (FMLP) particles were used as foreign bodies to be phagocytosed, the time to the peak CL response of the PMNs in an immunized group was shortened in comparison with a non-immunized control group, and the CL intensity was found to be prolonged. Whereas administration of KJ resulted in a re…

A quantitative evaluation of the effects of potassium iodide on the clinical properties of silver diamine fluoride.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), an effective topical fluoride agent for arresting caries, has a reputation for staining the teeth. Potassium iodide (KI) has been reported to minimize such staining, but doubts remain over its long-term efficacy and potential adverse influence on the effectiveness of SDF. This in vitro study used quantitative evaluation of color changes and the silver and fluoride release of treated tooth specimens to determine the effect of KI on the staining and caries-arresting properties of SDF. Twenty-one noncarious premolars were sectioned buccolingually to create 42 tooth …

Impact of potassium iodide on thyroidectomy for Graves' disease: Implications for safety and operative difficulty.

BACKGROUND: Potassium iodide often is prescribed prior to thyroidectomy for Graves' disease, but the effect of potassium iodide on the ease and safety of thyroidectomy for Graves' is largely unknown. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, cohort study of patients with Graves' disease undergoing thyroidectomy. For the first 8 months, no patients received potassium iodide; for the next 8 months, potassium iodide was added to the preoperative protocol for all patients. Outcomes included operative difficulty (based on the Thyroidectomy Difficulty Scale) and complications. RESULTS: We included a to…

Sporotrichosis successfully treated with terbinafine and potassium iodide: case report and review of the literature.

Sporotrichosis is rare in Turkey. We report a 40-year-old woman who had subcutaneous sporotrichosis caused by sporothrix schenckii that was successfully treated with terbinafine (250 mg, twice a day) for a period of 6 months. She received a saturated solution of potassium iodide orally for two months. Terbinafine and potassium iodide are suggested to be the agents of choice for treatment of subcutaneous sporotrichosis.
