[Speech intelligibility in noise at presbycusis].

Evaluation of speech recognition is possible by presenting testing material in sentence form with presence of competitive noise. We developed new test of sentence intelligibility in noise in the Czech language. This article demonstrates results of the influence of the babble noise on sentence intelligibility in hearing impaired listeners with presbycusis. The time characteristics of babble noise are similar to human voice. That is the reason why this noise masking is more enhanced at the central hearing level than any other noise masking. A group of 423 persons was divided into younger group (…

[The advantage of multidisciplinary treatment of presbycusis].

Attributable to the ageing of the hearing system, presbycusis presents a wide variability in the general population. Early detection is necessary in order to be able to provide the patient with a suitable hearing aid. Collaboration between otolaryngologists and geriatricians proves to be advantageous as a consultation for a memory complaint may be the opportunity to detect presbycusis and vice versa.

Management of tinnitus in patients with presbycusis.

Sensorineural hearing loss in elderly patients (presbycusis) relatively often coexists with annoying tinnitus (termed presbytinnitus [PT] by Claussen). The purpose of this study was to verify the conditions of improvement in patients treated for PT. We fitted with hearing aids 33 PT patients (ages 60-89 years) and questioned them about subjective hearing results. Assessment tools included comprehensive audiology and a subjective self-assessment survey of tinnitus characteristics. All patients had very good tolerance of the hearing aids; 28 reported that they had considerable reduction in PT in…

Presbycusis: the need for a clinical definition.

The term presbycusis is vague and needs specific signs and symptoms for its definition. Several types of presbycusis, depending on the type of lesion, have been proposed. This article suggests a working definition of "classic presbycusis," which may be defined as a syndrome involving (1) a bilaterally symmetric sensorineural hearing loss, (2) absent or partial recruitment, (3) negative noise history, and (4) poorer speech discrimination than indicated by pure tones (phonemic regression).

Novel insights into mechanisms and therapeutics for presbycusis.

Presbycusis, also referred to as age-related hearing loss, poses a substantial burden on both individuals and society. The hallmark of presbycusis is a progressive decrease in auditory sensitivity. Irreversible hearing loss occurs due to the limited regenerative capacity of spiral neurons and peripheral cochlear hair cells (HCs). Although hearing aids and cochlear implantations (CIs) are established approaches for alleviating symptoms of presbycusis, there are currently no preventive or curative measures available. This article provides a comprehensive discussion on the research progress perta…

Pitch and Loudness Tinnitus in Individuals with Presbycusis.

Introduction Tinnitus is a symptom that is often associated with presbycusis. Objective This study aims to analyze the existence of association among hearing thresholds, pitch, and loudness of tinnitus in individuals with presbycusis, considering the gender variable. Methods Cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study, whose sample consisted of individuals with tinnitus and diagnosis of presbycusis. For the evaluation, we performed anamnesis along with otoscopy, pure tone audiometry, and acuphenometry to analyze the psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus individuals. Results The sa…

Clinical and audiometric features of presbycusis in Nigerians.

BACKGROUND: Presbycusis is the most common sensory impairment associated with ageing and it presents with variability of symptoms. Physicians need to recognize early clinical and audiometric signs of presbycusis in order to render adequate and quality care to patients and reduce associated morbidities. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical modes of presentation and the typical audiometric tracings among patients with presbycusis. METHODS: This descriptive, prospective hospital-based study was conducted in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic of Olabisi Ona hing Hospital, (OOUTH) Sagamu, N…

[Preventive effects of pueraria on presbycusis in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the preventive effects of Pueraria on presbycusis in rats. METHOD: Thirty-two 24-26 month old Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups, and were treated with different dosages of Pueraria (1, 2, 4, 0 g x kg(-1) x d(-1)) separately for 4 weeks. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to detect the change of hearing threshold of rats. Hemorheological items of rats were checked in each group. RESULT: Compared with control group, the hearing threshold and hemorheological items of rats was significantly improved after treated with Pueraria (P<0.05). In addit…

Presbycusis: the aging ear. Part I.

The aging ear is a particularly vexing problem. This review of the literature covers much of the pertinent information and leads to some suggested research which we hope to pursue. It seems to us that research directed toward increased knowledge of the auditory blood supply and a better understanding of the function of the stria vascularis will add much to our understanding of the aging ear.
