Despite accumulating data implicating Propionibacterium acnes in a variety of diseases, its precise role in infection remains to be determined. P. acnes antigen-specific CD4(+) T cells are present in early inflamed acne lesions and may be involved in the inflammatory response; however, little is known about the specific antigens involved. In this study, B cell and T cell antigens from P. acnes expression libraries were cloned and evaluated and the four predominant proteins identified were investigated. Two of these antigens share some homology with an M-like protein of Streptococcus equi and h…

BACKGROUND: Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a common hypopigmentation mainly on the central parts of the trunk, predominantly in young … ilosebaceous duct, and a mild perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate was seen. In all but 1 patient, Propionibacterium acnes was yielded from cultured biopsy specimens taken from follicular lesional skin. Healthy follicular skin did not show bacteria in histological sections, and cultures did not yield anaerobic bacteria.
CONCLUSIONS: There seems to be a relation between …

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of acne and the role of Propionibacterium acnes. With this review, the authors aim to provide an update on the current understanding of the role of P. acnes in the development of acne lesions and analysing the potential implications for future treatments. A total of 188 articles published between January 1980 and March 2013 were searched using key words such as acne, P. acnes, microbiology, Corynebacterium acnes, acne vulgaris, pathogenesis, antibiotic, vaccination and a combination of…

We have come a long way since 1896, when it was first suggested that Propionibacterium acnes, found in acne lesions, was the cause of acne. Although several lines of evidence suggest the direct role of P acnes in acne, the mechanism by which P acnes contributes to the pathogenesis of acne is debated. The importance of P acnes in the induction and maintenance of the inflammatory phase of acne has been established. Emerging data that inflammatory events occur in the very earliest stages of acne development have reopened the debate about the potential involvement of this microorganism in comedoge…

The porphyrin productions of P a.-strains, isolated on the one hand from inlfammatory acne lesions, on the other hand from sebaceous follicle filaments from 10 persons each were compared quantitatively and qualitatively, after the appropriate material had been pooled, With respect to the acne strains one could observe a somewhat increased porphyrin production as well as the discharging of a precentually greater portion of porphyrins to the surrounding material. When separated by TLC the acne material showed a more intense coproporphyrin band.

PURPOSE: To report a case of atypical, indolent presentation of scleral buckle infection, caused by Cutibacterium acnes (formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes ).
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 44-year-old healthy woman with a history of scleral buckling procedure for retinal detachment repair 16 years before presentation was admitted with pain and redness in her left eye for 6 weeks. Conjunctival hyperemia and vascular congestion were noted over the scleral buckle in a circular manner without signs of exposure. After removal of the scleral buckle, culture analysis reveale…

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), a prevalent degenerative disorder with substantial socioeconomic impacts, is closely linked to endplate inflammation and chronic low back pain. Its pathogenesis involves multifactorial mechanisms, including long-term chronic mechanical loading, external trauma, and hereditary factors. Emerging evidence highlights Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a gram-positive bacterium with potent proinflammatory properties, as a key contributor to IVDD progression. This review systematically analyses the latest literature on related studies, focusing on the molecu…

BACKGROUND: Bacteriophages have been introduced as living drugs for infectious diseases; thus, they may provide an alternative to conventional acne therapeutics in patients with non-responsive acne.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effect of bacteriophages using an acne mouse model with Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory nodules by clinical examination, pathology, and immunohistochemical analysis.
METHODS: A human-isolated P. acnes suspension (109 colony forming units/µl) was injected into the backs of HR-1 mice. Group A was used as a control, Group B was injected on the back with P.…

Propionibacterium acnes, a non-spore-forming anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium, has been linked to a wide range of opportunistic human infections and conditions, most notably acne vulgaris. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of P. acnes subsp. elongatum strain Asn12, isolated from spinal disc tissue (in the United Kingdom).

Propionibacterium acnes is a dominant member of the cutaneous microbiota. Herein, we evaluate the effects of different P. acnes strains and propionic acid on autophagy in keratinocytes. Our results showed that P. acnes strain 889 altered the architecture of the mitochondrial network; elevated the levels of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B-II, Beclin-1, and phospho-5'-adenosine-monophosphate-activated protein kinase α; stimulated autophagic flux; facilitated intracellular redistribution of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B; increased average number of autophagosomes…

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of a positive culture to Propionibacterium acnes in orthopedic specimens remains unclear, whether about its role as a contaminant or a pathogen, or its impact as a coinfectant. Therefore, we performed a retrospective study to provide a more accurate description of the clinical impact of P. acnes in an orthopedic population aiming to determine: 1) if there is a clinical difference between P. acnes infection and contamination? 2) If there is a clinical difference between P. acnes monoinfection, and coinfection.
HYPOTHESIS: There is a clinical difference bet…

BACKGROUND: Propionibacterium acnes is a common cause of upper extremity arthroplasty infection and usually presents in an indolent subacute fashion. It is not well described how total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients infected with P acnes present.
METHODS: We retrospectively compared patients undergoing revision TKA for infection from P acnes and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcal aureus (MSSA) in our institutional infection database. Patients were classified as having a periprosthetic joint infection based on the Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria and were excluded if they had a p…

Determining if a Propionibacterium acnes culture is a true infection or a contaminant remains a challenge. We conducted a study to distinguish between a true infection and a contaminated culture based on the P acnes hemolytic phenotype and clinical presentation. All P acnes strains were from orthopedic patients who had undergone arthroplasty or nonarthroplasty shoulder procedures. Hemolysis was determined according to P acnes growth on brucella blood agar plates after 48 to 72 hours. Each patient record that corresponded to the obtained P acnes strains was retrospectively reviewed for clinical…

Posterior capsular opacification, also known as after cataract develops in 33 % of patients after uneventful cataract surgery. Nd-YAG Laser capsulotomy is the treatment of choice for PCO and is routinely performed by the general ophthalmologist on an OPD basis. Endophthalmitis, although a rare complication after Nd-YAG Laser capsulotomy, has been reported in the literature. We report a case of Propionibacterium acnes endophthalmitis following laser capsulotomy and the possible mechanism of its occurrence.

The screening of recently patented derivatives of the standard phenothiazinium agents methylene blue and toluidine blue was carried out against Propionibacterium acnes, the main bacterium associated with acne vulgaris. Comparative tests were made using the topical agent benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and standard tetracyclines. Each of the photosensitizers employed, including the lead compounds, was photobactericidal at lower concentrations than BPO, and produced a much more rapid kill than the tetracyclines. In addition, the tetracyclic and pentacyclic phenothiazinium derivatives exhibited high light…

This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of lauric acid (LA) and its liposomal derivatives against Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), the bacterium that promotes inflammatory acne. First, the antimicrobial study of three free fatty acids (lauric acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid) demonstrated that LA gives the strongest bactericidal activity against P. acnes. However, a setback of using LA as a potential treatment for inflammatory acne is its poor water solubility. Then the LA was incorporated into a liposome formulation to aid its delivery to P. acnes. It was demonstrated that the an…

UNLABELLED: Bacteria of the normal skin microbiota such as Propionibacterium acnes and coagulase-negative staphylococci often are dismissed as contaminants when detected in clinical samples. Propionibacterium acnes is described as a cause of spinal infection and more recently has been linked to sciatica. To date no researchers formally have examined the incidence of bacterial wound contamination during spinal surgery. Surgical specimens were removed from 79 patients having spinal surgery for analysis using agar culture detection, broth enrichment, and immunofluorescence microscopy. Bacteria we…

Moderate to severe facial acne is caused by infection with Propionibacterium acnes, an organism that has also been implicated in subacute osteomyelitis. The symptoms are often indolent in nature, but slowly progressive. We present a case report of subacute P. acnes osteomyelitis at our institution. A high index of suspicion and an extended incubation time are required for diagnosis. Treatment usually requires irrigation and debridement, with or without antibiotics.
