Clinical performance and implant stability of cement versus implant-retained and/or supported prostheses: A randomized controlled trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While implant-retained and/or supported mandibular prostheses have become an essential prosthetic alternative in complete edentulism, the biological response of implants supporting different digitally produced prostheses has not been thoroughly compared regarding the effect of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed overdentures versus milled fixed prostheses on implant stability and clinical indices. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of digitally fabricated mandibular fixed and removable implant-retained and/or supported prostheses on implant stability a

Necessity of removing implant-supported prostheses when conducting supportive peri-implant therapy: A clinical study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Poor or lack of adherence to supportive peri-implant therapy (SPIT) or supportive care has been associated with a significantly higher rate of peri-implantitis or peri-implant mucositis. However, whether therapy with or without the removal of an implant-supported prosthesis yields different outcomes remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonic devices in treating participants with or without the removal of implant-supported prostheses after more than 12 months of loading. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty participant

Active middle ear implant coupled bilaterally to the round window despite bilateral implanted stapes prostheses.

After stapes surgery, patients with mixed or moderate hearing loss have limited possibilities for hearing improvement. We are reporting on a patient who underwent stapedotomy bilaterally 20 years ago and had sensorineural and mixed hearing loss. Recurrent otitis externa prevented the use of hearing aids. This patient was treated bilaterally with the Vibrant Soundbridge (Med-El, Innsbruck, Austria) successively. The Schuknecht piston stapes prostheses remained in situ. The Floating Mass Transducer (FMT; Med-El) was coupled to the round window (RW) and provided good acoustic reinforcement bilate

Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses as an alternative to orthodontic space closure (and to single-tooth implants).

This article describes single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) as an excellent alternative to orthodontic space closure or tooth replacement with implants or conventional fixed dental prostheses for congenitally and traumatically missing anterior teeth. Although the treatment with RBFDPs is technique sensitive, it is extremely reliable given a correct indication and adequate adhesive procedures.

Functional loads on freestanding and connected implants in three-unit mandibular prostheses opposing complete dentures: an in vivo study.

In vivo measurements of vertical forces and bending moments during biting and chewing were carried out on 10 three-unit prostheses in the posterior mandibles of five patients. Each patient had two prostheses, one supported by two implants and the other supported by one implant and one tooth. The results demonstrated no major difference in functional load magnitudes related to the support type. The distribution of load between the abutments was influenced more by the prosthesis geometry and implant placement than by the difference in load characteristics of tooth and implant. This conclusion, h

The effect of cortical thickness and thread profile dimensions on stress and strain in bone-anchored implants for amputation prostheses.

Skeletal attachment of limb prostheses ensures load transfer between the prosthetic leg and the skeleton. For individuals with lower limb amputation, these loads may be of substantial magnitude. To optimize the design of such systems, knowledge about the structural interplay between implant design features, dimensional changes, and material properties of the implant and the surrounding bone is needed. Here, we present the results from a parametric finite element investigation on a generic bone-anchored implant system of screw design, exposed to external loads corresponding to average and high

CAD/CAM Fabrication of Definitive Implant Prostheses: A Digital Workflow From Planning to Implant Placement to Final Restoration.

Traditional methods of performing dental implant surgery and fabricating a definitive implant-supported prosthesis are being supplanted by digital techniques that provide greater precision and a more durable and esthetic restoration. In the present case, a 68-year-old woman presented a severely compromised dentition. She had received extensive restorative dentistry in the past and, due to recurrent caries and chronic periodontitis, was facing the loss of her maxillary teeth, as well as teeth in the lower left quadrant. This case report illustrates the use of a number of digital techniques for

[Adjuvant surgical maneuvers in penile prostheses implant to improve their aesthetic and functional outcomes].

Penile prosthetic surgery is the definitive treatment for those patients with erectile dysfunction refractory to medical treatment. Although it associates satisfaction rates>90%, it is known that men with Peyronie's disease, body mass index>30kg/m2 or those previously operated on radical prostatectomy have lower satisfaction rates than the general population. The main reasons for dissatisfaction are the subjective loss of penile length and glans' flaccidity. Given such circumstance, several adjuvant surgical techniques have been described to improve aesthetic and functional outcomes after the

Review of endoscopic devices for weight reduction: old and new balloons and implantable prostheses.

The worldwide epidemic of obesity is forecast to worsen with a concomitant increase in the burden of co-morbid conditions. Bariatric surgery has some disadvantages, and intragastric balloons (IGBs) represent a generally safe, reversible and less invasive approach to weight reduction, based on occupying gastric space to enhance the sensation of satiety. A literature review found that the majority of the published data on IGBs relates to the Bioenterics intragastric balloon (BIB). The evidence for the efficacy of the BIB as a primary means of weight loss is still unconvincing, but it appears to
