Quantifying survival in patients with Proteus syndrome.

PurposeProteus syndrome is a rare mosaic overgrowth disorder that is associated with severe complications. While anecdotal data have suggested that the life span of affected patients is reduced, this has not been measured. Mortality data on rare diseases is critical for assessing treatments and other interventions.MethodsTo address this we used the clinical research records of 64 patients in a longitudinal natural history cohort at the National Institutes of Health to ascertain the data in an organized manner and estimate survival using a Kaplan-Meier approach.ResultsThe median age of diagnosi

Proteus Syndrome With a Cranial Intraosseous Lipoma.

Intraosseous lipomas are almost exclusively seen in the long bones. Presence in the craniofacial skeleton is extremely rare. A 7-year-old male is presented with a marked craniofacial deformation from a bony tumor containing an intraosseous lipoma. This finding established a clinical diagnosis of Proteus syndrome. Given the size of the tumor, producing an extensive deformity, three-dimensional modeling was used to generate a three-dimensional printed implant. The process to achieve a successful outcome is herein described.

Proteus syndrome: evaluation of the immunological profile.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is an extremely rare and complex disease characterized by malformations and overgrowth of different tissues. Prognosis of affected patients may be complicated by premature death, mostly due to pulmonary embolism and respiratory failure. To date, immunological data in Proteus syndrome are scarse. We report on the novel immunologic findings of a 15 years old girl affected with PS. Detailed T and B cell evaluation revealed maturational alterations for both subsets and functional hyperactivation for the latter. Such findings have not been reported previously in PS and may be t

A case of concurrent proteus syndrome and hemophilia a.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is a very rare condition with less than 100 confirmed cases reported worldwide. We report a case of Proteus syndrome in a two-year-old male who has hemophilia A comorbidity. CASE PRESENTATION: A two-year-old male patient was admitted with the chief complaint of severe bleeding in mouth cavity after trauma for two weeks. At admission he was found to have petechiae on buccal mucosa and fecal discoloration due to GI bleeding. We noted multiple abnormalities in his musculoskeletal system and skin. He had lymph edema in left leg, hemihypertrophy, macrodactyly in both f

Pulmonary manifestations and management of proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a very rare, sporadic and congenital condition that is characterized by postnatal mosaic overgrowth. This disorder is thought to be caused by a somatic gene mutation, but the exact etiology is unknown. Commonly involved tissues include connective tissue, bone, skin and the central nervous system. Another less common symptom involves pulmonary emphysematous changes. This report documents a 25-year-old man with Proteus syndrome who presented with progressive exertional dyspnea and asymmetric overgrowth of his extremities. He underwent left pneumonectomy and his postoperative

Management of craniofacial hyperostosis in Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital hamartomatous condition that is characterized by a wide range of malformations, occasionally involving the head and the face. Skin and skeletal developmental malformations are common and may be manifested in significant physical anomalies. In this report, we describe the cases of 2 patients affected by this condition. For one patient, a recurrence occurred 4 years after the elimination of cranial hyperostosis. In the second patient, although we observed macrosomia and peculiar countenance in the context of craniofacial hyperostosis, the patient did not vis

Precocious puberty in a female with Proteus Syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a complex disorder comprising malformations and overgrowth of multiple tissues and characterized by its polymorphism and mosaicism. The syndrome is rare and sporadic. Oliveira M da C et al reported the first case of Proteus syndrome associated with precocious puberty in a boy. We are reporting a case of a 7-month old girl with Proteus syndrome who developed a juvenile granulosa cell tumor in one ovary causing precocious puberty. At our knowledge this is the first case of Proteus syndrome with precocious puberty in a female.

Diversity of TEM mutants in Proteus mirabilis.

In a survey of resistance to amoxicillin among clinical isolates of Proteus mirabilis, 10 TEM-type beta-lactamases were characterized: (i) the well-known penicillinases TEM-1 and TEM-2, the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) TEM-3 and TEM-24, and the inhibitor-resistant TEM (IRT) TEM-44 and (ii) five novel enzymes, a penicillinase TEM-57 similar to TEM-1, an ESBL TEM-66 similar to TEM-3, and three IRTs, TEM-65, TEM-73, and TEM-74. The penicillinase TEM-57 and the ESBL TEM-66 differed from TEM-1 and TEM-3, respectively, by the amino acid substitution Gly-92-->Asp (nucleotide mutation G-4

Proteus syndrome: emphasis on the pulmonary manifestations.

Published articles on the radiologic aspects of Proteus syndrome are sparse. This report highlights the features of this disease with specific attention to the serious pulmonary manifestations that may occur at an early age. Two cases of Proteus syndrome and severe lung disease are presented, with complete autopsy in one case and correlative surgical pathologic data in the other. Multiple superficial and visceral vascular abnormalities were present in both cases. Both patients developed rapidly progressive diffuse cystic emphysematous pulmonary disease leading to the death of one patient at ag

Compromise of the spinal canal in Proteus syndrome.

We report on 2 children with spinal stenosis and neurologic sequelae. They illustrate the 2 ways in which spinal compromise may develop in Proteus syndrome--vertebral anomalies or tumor infiltration. In one patient, spinal stenosis resulted from an angular kyphoscoliosis. In the other, cord compression resulted from infiltration of a paraspinal, intrathoracic angiolipoma.

Cryoglobulinaemia in a patient with Proteus mirabilis sepsis.

Mixed polyclonal cryoglobulinaemia was evidenced in a 49-year-old woman admitted to our hospital because of Proteus mirabilis sepsis associated with polyarthralgia and purpuric manifestations on the lower limbs. Cryoglobulins and circulating immune complexes decreased during the second week of illness and disappeared after recovery. CH50, C3 and properdin factor B, which were low during the early phase of the illness, returned to normal; C4 was normal throughout. The rapid clearance of cryoglobulins and immune complexes and the restoration of a normal complement profile might all be explained

Vaccination with proteus toxic agglutinin, a hemolysin-independent cytotoxin in vivo, protects against Proteus mirabilis urinary tract infection.

Complicated urinary tract infections (UTI) caused by Proteus mirabilis are associated with severe pathology in the bladder and kidney. To investigate the roles of two established cytotoxins, the HpmA hemolysin, a secreted cytotoxin, and proteus toxic agglutinin (Pta), a surface-associated cytotoxin, mutant analysis was used in conjunction with a mouse model of ascending UTI. Inactivation of pta, but not inactivation of hpmA, resulted in significant decreases in the bacterial loads of the mutant in kidneys (P < 0.01) and spleens (P < 0.05) compared to the bacterial loads of the wild type; the 5

Pericarditis caused by Proteus mirabilis in sheep.

Pericarditis means inflammation in the pericardial sac. Pericarditis is divided into three categories based on morphology, including fibrinous, purulent, and constrictive. In the present study, a 7-month-old male Ghezel breed sheep was examined for low weighting rate for three months. Tachypnea, tachycardia, heart friction sound, absence of fever and normal appetite were recorded in the clinical examination. In the patient's history, there was a history of perforated chest trauma behind the left scapula about three months ago. After the echocardiography examination and bacteriology procedures,

Pyoderma caused by Proteus mirabilis in sheep.

Pyoderma is a purulent skin infection usually caused by bacteria and can be divided into primary and secondary categories based on histology. In the present study, an 18-month-old female mixed breed sheep was examined for pyoderma at the injection site of the enterotoxemia vaccine. After routine bacteriology and histopathology procedures, secondary pyoderma caused by Proteus mirabilis was diagnosed. The bacterium analysed using genome sequencing and new strain called AJJ 2021 was diagnosed. This is the first report of pyoderma caused by Proteus mirabilis in sheep.
