The Talbieh Brief Distress Inventory: a brief instrument to measure psychological distress among immigrants.

The purpose of this study was to develop and test the Talbieh Brief Distress Inventory (TBDI), a 24-item self-report questionnaire that measures psychological distress among immigrants. The TBDI combines items from the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview Demoralization Scale (PERI-D). It includes a global score and six scales (obsessiveness, hostility, sensitiveness, depression, anxiety, and paranoid ideation). A convenience sample of 966 recent immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union were asked to complete a Russian-language version of t…

Confirmatory validation of the Mesothelioma Psychological Distress Tool-Patients: A brief patient-reported outcome measure assessing psychological distress in malignant mesothelioma patients.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological suffering in patients with Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is different from the one experienced by patients with other cancers due to its occupational or environmental etiology and its peculiar symptomatology and prognosis (i.e., poor prognosis, reduced effectiveness of the therapies, poor quality of residual life, and advanced age at the time of diagnosis). Therefore, the Mesothelioma Psychological Distress Tool-Patients (MPDT-P) has been developed to evaluate the specific profile of psychological suffering in this population. This paper describes the item selection, fac…

Psychological maltreatment and substance use among college students: Psychological distress, belongingness, and social support.

Substance use in college students is an important public health problem associated with substantial consequences. It is a critical step to examine risk and protective factors associated with substance use to develop prevention and intervention strategies for promoting college students' healthy development and well-being. The present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the mediating role of psychological distress in the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment and substance use and the moderating effect of social support and belongingness in this association among college st…

Psychological Distress among Japanese University Students after Parental Bereavement.

Although parental bereavement during childhood or adolescence increases the risk of depression, few studies focus on young adult Japanese who have lost a parent. This study investigates the risk of psychological distress among Japanese young adults who experienced parental bereavement during childhood or adolescence (bereavement group), comparing their mental health with non-bereaved students (control group). A questionnaire survey was performed on 6385 students at A University, following the Japanese version of Kessler 6 (K6) to assess psychological distress. In total, 1508 students (42 in th…

Psychological distress, forced awakening, and morning blood pressure surge.

BACKGROUND: Morning blood pressure surge (MBPS) has been recognized as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease events. Psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and perceived stress, and behavioral risk factors, such as poor sleep quality, have been associated with increased MBPS. Elevations in sympathetic activity induced by forced awakening may also contribute to further increases in MBPS. Yet, no examination of the interrelationships among psychological distress, sleep quality, awakening mode (natural vs. forced awakenings), and MBPS has been undertaken. OBJECTIVE: …

Dental Disparities and Psychological Distress Among Mobility-Impaired Adults.

INTRODUCTION: More than one in five American adults has a disability, the most common being mobility impairment (MI). People with MI face significant barriers to healthcare access and are more likely to experience psychological distress. This study examined disparities in access to medical and dental care among people with MI and examine the mediational role of psychological distress on this relationship. METHODS: Analyses were conducted on 36,697 adults (aged ≥18 years) responding to the 2014 National Health Interview Survey (analyzed in 2015). MI was defined as needing special equipment and…

The sample consisted of 10,273 students aged 12-17 years from the State of Victoria, Australia. Participants completed frequency measures of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, inhalant, and other drug use in the past 30 days, and psychological distress. Control variables included age, gender, family soc…

Psychological distress and post-traumatic symptoms following occupational accidents.

Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder frequently occur as a consequence of occupational accidents. To date, research has been primarily focused on high-risk workers, such as police officers or firefighters, and has rarely considered individuals whose occupational environment involves the risk of severe, but not necessarily life-threatening, injury. Therefore, the present study was aimed at assessing the psychological consequences of accidents occurring in several occupational settings (e.g., construction and industry). Thirty-eight victims of occupational accidents (injured workers) an

Construal level, rumination, and psychological distress in palliative care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a life-limiting illness, such as cancer, and their carers experience elevated psychological distress. However, the psychological mechanisms underpinning distress in palliative care have been little studied. Recent theories predict that individuals who experience increased uncertainty in the context of ongoing difficulties, such as palliative patients and their carers, will (a) think more abstractly; (b) ruminate more; and (c) be more distressed. METHODS: Palliative patients (n = 36, 90% with cancer), their carers (n = 29), and age-matched controls (n = 30) completed …

Psychological distress, major depressive disorder, and risk of stroke.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that mood status is associated with an increased risk of stroke, though mostly based on measures of depre … elationship. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this large prospective cohort study suggest that increased psychological distress is associated with elevated stroke risk. Episodic major depressive disorder was not associated with incident stroke in this study.
