Psychophysiological Reactivity in Child Sexual Abuse.

Sexual abuse has physiological and emotional implications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the neurobiological sequels of childhood sexual trauma by monitoring physiological variables among sexually abused girls and women compared to controls. We assessed posttrauma and traumatic life events of 35 females sexually abused in their childhood (age range 7-51 years) and 25 control females (age range 7-54 years). Electroencephalography, frontalis electromyography, electrodermal activity, and heart rate parameters were recorded while watching sets of pictures representing neutral and trauma

A Psychophysiological Case Study of Orchestra Conductors.

The psychological and physiological effects of performance were investigated in two professional orchestral conductors, with data collected prior to, during, and after a rehearsal and a public performance. The participants were given a battery of psychological self-report tests (anxiety, dissociation, health inventory, fantasy proneness, shame, and flow). Ambulatory physiological monitoring (Vivometric LifeShirt® system) was conducted during both a rehearsal and public performance to gather information about the autonomic nervous system and heart rate variability (HRV). One conductor had a his

Psychophysiological correlates of interpersonal cooperation and aggression.

Mimicking real world situations, the Chicken Game allows scientists to examine human decision-making when the outcome is not entirely within one person's control. In this social dilemma task, two players independently choose either to safely cooperate with, or riskily aggress against, the other player, and the unique combination of their choices specifies the outcome for each. Coupling the Chicken Game with psychophysiological measures, we confirmed our two hypotheses: that an individual perceives an outcome as most negative when she chooses to cooperate and the other player violates that trus

Psychophysiological responses in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Physical and emotional stress and altered reactivity of the autonomic nervous system have been implicated in the development and maintenance of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). This study investigated blood pressure, heart rate (HR), skin conductance levels (SCL), and surface electromyograms (EMG) from the trapezius muscle in 30 FMS patients and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). All measures were continuously recorded during baseline (BL), social conflict, mental arithmetic, and relaxation tasks. The FMS patients showed significantly higher stress ratings and self-reported stress res

[Clinical and psychophysiological characteristics of headache in childhood].

Complex clinical psychophysiological as well as neurophysiological examinations of 210 children with migraine, chronic tension headache (CTH) and chronic posttraumatic headache (CPH) were carried out. Detailed comparative description of cephalalgia types is presented. In a CPH structure, predominates CTH (77.5%), combined type (14.1%); migraine (5.7%) and cervicogenic cephalalgia (2.7%) occur less often. CPH development mechanisms do not principally differ from non-traumatic cephalalgia pathogenesis. Trauma plays a role of a non-specific trigger in realization of these mechanisms. Chronic ceph

A psychophysiological approach to assessing premature ejaculation.

A hierarchical psychophysiological model is described that provides a working framework for clinicians interested in addressing issues related to premature ejaculation (PE). Within this framework, psychophysiological laboratory analysis, used in conjunction with conventional self-report measures, has potential to contribute both to the measurement and understanding of premature ejaculation and to the assessment of treatment procedures aimed at alleviating PE.

[The psychophysiological aspects of treating obesity with Izolipan].

20 patients with obesity were examined. Their weight was increased as compared with ideal values by 30-140%. The patients were characterized by anxious or depressive disturbances (Spilberger's and Beck tests) and alterations of alimentary behaviour in form of prevalence of emotional and external alimentary behaviour (EMAB and EAB, respectively). The study of cognitive negative variations (CNV) revealed the decrease of late wave's area, which correlated reversely with levels of anxiety, depression and EMAB expression. The Isolipan administration (15 mg, 2 times/daily during 3 months) together w

Analysis of psychophysiological mechanism with cardiovascular risks.

The review summarises newer findings on the relations between personality and behavioural traits and the risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD). After a critical analysis of the type of A behavioural pattern (TABP), the role of hostility as a crucial element of this behaviour is underlined. Emphasis is put on the cardiovascular overarousal on the psychophysiological mechanisms of TABP and on the relationship proved by the authors too, between TABP and diseases other than CHD. It appears justified to consider TABP rather as a "disease prone behaviour" especially among stress vulnerable s

Psychophysiological characteristics of anxiety patients and controls.

87 patients with panic syndrome or agoraphobia with panic were compared with 28 generalized anxiety patients and 29 controls. Psychophysiological measures included rating scales, autonomic responses patterns, auditory thresholds and vigilance characteristics. In panic patients the state anxiety and the blood and injury phobia were significantly higher than in generalized anxiety patients. The generalized anxiety group could be characterized by high trait anxiety, suicidal ideation and lower capacity for sustained attention. Phasic electrodermal response amplitudes to the first verbal stimulus

Maternal psychophysiology profiles: associations with prenatal opioid use, maternal emotion dysregulation, and newborn neurobehavior.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use among pregnant women has more than quadrupled over the past 20 years; however, comorbid risk factors such as emotion … ndividuals using opioids who show more flexible RSA responses. IMPACT: Our study examined maternal psychophysiology and newborn outcomes in a unique population with high levels of emotion dysregulation and opioid use. Three profiles of maternal respiratory sinus arrythmia (RSA) reactivity were identified during pregnancy: decreasing, blunted, and increasing. The …

Evolutionary Theories of Emotion in Italian Psychophysiology: Reception, Critique, and Influence, 1880-1920.

This article examines how Italian psychophysiologists engaged with Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory of the emotions (ETE) between 1880 and 1920. Darwin's work on the natural history of emotions converged with a vibrant tradition of experimental psychophysiology that embodied Italian Positivism's scientific ambitions. The article investigates how the reception of Darwin's ETE in post-unification Italy intersected with the local construction of "emotion" as a physiological and experimental object. It first traces the dissemination of Darwin's ideas through key venues such as the Rivista di F…

Dreaming in posttraumatic stress disorder: A critical review of phenomenology, psychophysiology and treatment.

This review summarizes the available knowledge on the phenomenology of posttraumatic dreams. Posttraumatic nightmares are reported by up to 70% of individuals suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An extensive review of polysomnographic studies suggests that neither this high incidence nor the occurrence of posttraumatic nightmares throughout the sleep cycle can be explained by altered REM sleep parameters. The assumption that a reduction of dream recall may serve as a coping mechanism in PTSD patients is questionable. About 50% of posttraumatic dreams comprise exact replication

Psychophysiology of work: stress, gender, endocrine response, and work-related upper extremity disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mental stress may induce muscle tension and has been proposed to contribute to the development of work related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs) by driving low threshold motor units into degenerative processes by overload. METHODS AND RESULTS: Measurements of perceived stress, catecholamines, blood pressure, and heart rate are associated with stress induced elevation of trapezius electromyographic activity. In repetitive tasks, where WRUEDs are common, psychophysiological arousal is generally high both during and after work. A possible explanation of the high prevalence of WRUEDs

Psychophysiological indexes in the detection of deception: A systematic review.

Robust evidence on deception detection highlights that humans perform at chance level, especially when a truth-default cognitive threshold is crossed by the deceiver. This systematic review examined whether identification of deceptive stimuli elicits specific physiological responses in the detectors of deception. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, five databases were searched for human studies that evaluate physiological reactivity to deceptive stimuli, along with behavioural responses. Eleven studies (thirteen experiments) were in

Exploring the Bob Ross effect: A psychophysiological investigation.

UNLABELLED: Watching news broadcasts is known to elicit psychological stress. Conversely, the iconic painter Bob Ross (BR) has risen to pop culture status and amassed a following, as many find the messages and sounds of BR to be soothing and relaxing. Though, it has yet to be directly tested if such exposure can confer psychological or physiological benefit. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of watching BR versus streaming news on markers of cardiovascular health and profile of mood states (POMS). It was hypothesized that watching BR would increase POMS scores and heart rate

Understanding Breathlessness Burden and Psychophysiological Correlates in Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Breathlessness is a disabling symptom, with complexity that is often under-recognized and undertreated in asthma. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the burden of breathlessness in people with severe compared with mild-to-moderate asthma and identify psychophysiological correlates of breathlessness. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of people with mild-to-severe asthma, who attended 2 in-person visits to complete a multidimensional assessment. The proportion of people with mild-to-moderate versus severe asthma who reported physically limiting breathlessness (modified Medical Researc
