The effectiveness of continuing group psychotherapy for outpatients with alcohol dependence: 77-month outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Group psychotherapy (PT) is one of the most common interventions used to treat alcohol dependence (AD), and it is assumed to be effective. Despite its common clinical use, long-term trials that have been conducted to examine the efficacy of group PT in the treatment of outpatients with AD are limited and often lack appropriate comparisons. On that basis, a long-term comparative trial was performed with the main objective of evaluating the effectiveness of continuing group PT for outpatients with AD. METHODS: Quasi-experimental trial was conducted from January 2004 to May 2010 in 1

A comparison study of antidepressants and structured intensive group psychotherapy in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.

Previous research on the treatment of outpatients with bulimia nervosa has focused on two treatment strategies: (1) drug therapy, primarily using tricyclic antidepressants, and (2) psychotherapy, often employing behavioral and cognitive behavioral techniques. We report here the short-term treatment outcome of a 12-week comparison trial of bulimic outpatients who were randomly assigned to one of four treatment cells: (1) imipramine hydrochloride treatment, (2) placebo treatment, (3) imipramine treatment combined with intensive group psychotherapy, and (4) placebo treatment combined with intensi

Cognitive-existential group psychotherapy for women with primary breast cancer: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a randomised, controlled trial of cognitive-existential group therapy (CEGT) for women with early stage breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy with the aim of improving mood and mental attitude to cancer. METHODS: Women were randomised to 20 sessions of weekly group therapy plus 3 relaxation classes or to a control arm receiving 3 relaxation classes. Assessments, independently done at baseline, 6 and 12 months, included a structured psychiatric interview and validated questionnaires covering mood, attitudes to cancer, family relationships, and satisfaction with

Narcissism Facets and Gelotophobia as Predictors of Early Outcomes in Group Psychotherapy for Personality Difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated how specific narcissistic traits and gelotophobia (fear of being laughed at) predict changes in depressive symptoms and negative affect during the first three months of treatment in individuals with personality disorders. METHOD: Forty-eight patients (75% female, M age = 31.76) with personality difficulties participated in group psychotherapy. Outcome variables were depressive symptoms (PHQ-9) and negative affect (PANAS-X), measured pre-intervention and after 3 months of psychotherapy. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to test the hypotheses. The analy

Patterns of change and their relationship to outcome and follow-up in group and individual psychotherapy for depression.

OBJECTIVE: The study explored the presence of different patterns of change in a sample of patients who received cognitive therapy for depression sequentially in two different formats: group and individual. Our hypothesis was that patients' baseline characteristics (e.g., symptom severity, self-esteem) would discriminate patterns of response to group and individual therapy. METHOD: 108 adults who met criteria for depression and completed the treatments included in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Clinical Outcome in Routine E

Assimilation, reflexivity, and therapist responsiveness in group psychotherapy for social phobia: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: This case study examined reflexivity and the assimilation of problematic experiences, especially its progress within and between the Assimilation of Problematic Experiences Scale (APES) Stages 2-3, in group psychotherapy for social phobia. METHOD: The data consisted of all of one client's turns expressing the two voices of her main problematic experience in 12 sessions, and all replies by the therapist in direct connection to them. The client's utterances were rated on the APES. RESULTS: A detailed analysis of 13 conversational passages revealed that progress in assimilation happe

Group psychotherapy for women molested in childhood: psychological and somatic symptoms and medical visits.

Molested women who completed a series of 16 weekly group psychotherapy sessions conducted by social workers improved substantially regarding various aspects of psychological functioning, including self-image, coping techniques, relationship issues, and mothering. In addition, there was significant improvement in all psychological symptom scales and all global indices of symptomatic distress measured by the SCL-90-R. Furthermore, the improvement was present immediately after therapy and, with the exception of the hostility score, persisted 1 year later. Although the somatization score was reduc

Two-year outcome of social skills training and group psychotherapy for outpatients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: The authors evaluated the effectiveness of behaviorally oriented social skills training and supportive group therapy for improving the social adjustment of schizophrenic patients living in the community and for protecting them against psychotic relapse. METHOD: Eighty male outpatients with schizophrenia were stabilized with a low dose of fluphenazine decanoate (5 to 10 mg every 14 days), which was supplemented with oral fluphenazine (5 mg twice daily) or a placebo when they first met criteria for a prodromal period. (Half of the patients did so at some time during the study.) Patie

Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents With Non-suicidal Self-injury: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant clinical concern in adolescents. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of group interpersonal psychotherapy (G-IPT) combined with treatment as usual (TAU) compared with TAU alone in treating adolescents with NSSI. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a psychiatric outpatient clinic in Hubei Province, China, involving 52 adolescents 12 to 17 years of age diagnosed with NSSI. Participants were randomly assigned to either the G-IPT combined with TAU group (n=26), who received 12 additional G-IPT sessions, or the TAU-alone gr

Brief day hospital mentalization based group psychotherapy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization-based therapy (MBT), a manualized psychodynamically and developmentally oriented psychotherapy, has been proven effective in controlled studies in non-psychotic patients with severe mental disorders. Although MBT is currently being used to treat schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), to date no prospective studies have evaluated outcomes and treatment-related adverse effects. Brief mentalization-based group psychotherapy (B-MBGT) is a 12-week program based on the explicit mentalizing techniques of MBT. The study was conducted at a day hospital (DH) and the main objec

[Recommendations on performing polygraphy or polysomnography in the fields of psychiatry and psychotherapy : Position paper of the working group on sleep medicine of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics].

Difficulties in falling asleep and maintaining sleep, nonrestorative sleep and decreased daytime wakefulness represent very common but relatively unspecific health complaints. Around 100 specific sleep-related disorders will be classified in their own major chap. 7 (sleep wake disorders) for the first time in the upcoming 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 11). With respect to the disciplines of psychiatry and psychotherapy there is a bidirectional relationship between mental health and sleep wake disorders. Sleep wake disorders can be an independent risk factor

Referral to group psychotherapy: a retrospective study on patients' personality features associated with clinicians' judgments.

This study was designed to explore selected personality features of patients that are associated with clinicians' judgments about whom to refer to dynamic group psychotherapy versus individual therapy. Results suggested that an aspect of patients' adult attachment style, namely level of confidence and level of hostility, may have influenced the clinicians' judgments and decision making about treatment referrals.

Efficacy of group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder: A meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials.

Group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD) is an established treatment supported by findings from primary studies and earlier meta-analyses. However, a comprehensive summary of the recent evidence is still pending. This meta-analysis investigates the efficacy of group psychotherapy for adult patients with SAD. A literature search identified 36 randomized-controlled trials examining 2171 patients. Available studies used mainly cognitive-behavioral group therapies (CBGT); therefore, quantitative analyses were done for CBGT. Medium to large positive effects emerged for wait list-contro

NEO-five factor personality traits as predictors of response to two forms of group psychotherapy.

The relationships between patient personality variables and outcome for 107 psychiatric outpatients with complicated grief who completed either interpretive or supportive short-term group therapy were investigated. The personality variables were assessed prior to treatment with the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). For patients in both forms of therapy, extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness were directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, neuroticism was inversely related to favorable outcome for patients in both forms of therapy. Agreeableness was directly re
