Catastrophic consequences secondary to psychotropic drugs, Part 1.

The use of psychotropic drugs has dramatically changed the lives of many; yet as often occurs with technological advances, negative outcomes can be encountered. Potentially fatal reactions to neuroleptic drugs and serotonin-enhancing agents (e.g., antidepressants) have been presented in Part 1, with the intent of alerting and informing psychiatric nurses. Part 2 will complete this series on catastrophic consequences of psychotropic drugs with a discussion of agranulocytosis and lithium toxicity.

Congenital malformations caused by psychotropic drugs in pregnancy.

After a description of the harmful effects of psychotropic drugs as well as of the moments of vulnerability to any teratogenic effect, this paper reviews prospective, retrospective and epidemiological studies of the teratogenic effects of anticonvulsants (phenytoin, valproic acid, carbamazepine and barbiturates), lithium, anti-psychotics, benzodiazepines and anti-depressive agents. It is found that the results of these studies are not unequivocal. Only lithium and valproic acid are shown to be teratogenic. In cases where malformations of the fetus are observed, the treatment often consisted in…

Skin on Drugs: Psychotropic Compounds in Cutaneous Biology.

Recent evidence reveals that several psychotropic compounds exert significant biological effects on the skin through neurochemical and immunomodulatory pathways. Cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) show potent anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and anti-aging properties when applied topically, and may hold therapeutic potential. Antidepressants, particularly fluoxetine (Prozac), have been shown to regulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in keratinocytes, suggesting benefits applied in allergic pathologies. Additionally, fluoxetine promotes wound healing and cell regener

Off-label use of psychotropic drugs in youth.

OBJECTIVE: Assess the prevalence of off-label psychotropic medication use in paediatric and adolescent outpatients, and to identify the most frequently prescribed drugs for various psychiatric conditions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed using data from the Norwegian Prescription Database (NorPD) and responses to an electronic survey distributed to child and adolescent psychiatrists across Norway. The NorPD data used in this study was collected from January 1, 2019, through December 31, 2019. The electronic survey was sent out in January 2021 and was active until March 2021. RE

[Psychotropic drugs during pregnancy and lactation: development practice].

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and the postpartum periods are particular for the mother's use of drugs. Therapeutic prescription must take into account the potential risk of fetal malformation, newborn's withdrawal syndrome, feeding type and potential risk of untreated maternal mental illness. Recommendations for good practice are constantly remodeling and their conclusions are sometimes contradictory. METHOD: The aim of this work is to develop an updated review, easy to use for any professional involved in the monitoring or prescription of a psychotropic medication (antidepressants, anxiolytics-hyp

Use of psychotropic drugs and associated dental diseases.

Patients with problems related to central nervous system dysfunctions are often treated with psychotropic drugs. These include antipsychotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants, and drugs blocking specific receptors in the brain such as anticholinergics or beta-blockers. However, these medications have serious side effects affecting the oral health. In addition, many dental patients make use of psychoactive drugs, such as amphetamine, ecstasy, and cocaine. This article aims to review data on the psychotropic drugs being used in the last 30 years, their pharmacological profile,…

Neuroprotective effects of psychotropic drugs in Huntington's disease.

Psychotropics (antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, anxiolytics, etc.) are commonly prescribed to treat Huntington's disease (HD). In HD preclinical models, while no psychotropic has convincingly affected huntingtin gene, HD modifying gene, or huntingtin protein expression, psychotropic neuroprotective effects include upregulated huntingtin autophagy (lithium), histone acetylation (lithium, valproate, lamotrigine), miR-222 (lithium-plus-valproate), mitochondrial protection (haloperidol, trifluoperazine, imipramine, desipramine, nortriptyline, maprotiline, trazodone, sertraline, v

Gender, psychosis and psychotropic drugs: differences and similarities.

Acute psychosis is diagnosed by clearly defined operational criteria embedded into international classification systems. Many studies have tried to determine the role of gender in psychosis but mainly in terms of epidemiology and course of illness, most often schizophrenia. There are however also important gender-specific differences in clinical symptoms of acute psychosis. No guidelines or treatment recommendations suggest gender as an important factor in the choice of antipsychotic treatment, which is true for all treatment modalities (antipsychotic, dose, duration). We will review shortly a

SIADH: a serious side effect of psychotropic drugs.

In this communication two cases of possibly drug induced hyponatremia secondary to amitriptyline and thioridazine have been reported. What is particularly important is the fact that in one, irreversible neurological symptoms were left as sequelae and in the other, the patient was in a coma and thus suffered from a potentially lethal complication. The physicians should be aware of this disturbing side effect while treating their patients with antidepressant and neuroleptic medications.

Psychotropic drugs and long QT syndromes: case reports.

Two depressed patients with long QT syndrome who experienced torsade de pointes ventricular tachycardia when treated with psychotropic drugs are discussed. These cases emphasize the significance of electrocardiographic evaluation of depressed patients, particularly in patients who show evidence of a long QT interval.

[Biochemical mechanisms of the hepatotoxicity of psychotropic drugs].

The first part of this article presents the mechanisms for the hepatotoxicity of xenobiotics known to date, in particular the interference w … o mentioned. Finally, in the third part, we present the principal cases of hepatotoxicity caused by psychotropic drugs: antidepressants (MAOIs and tricyclics), neuroleptics (phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, butyrophenones and benzamides) and anxiolytics, to which we add the anticonvulsants (phenytoin, phenacemide, oxazolidinediones, carbamazepine and valproic acid).
