[Pterygium: surgical treatment].

PURPOSE: The surgical management of pterygium is often complicated by recurrence of disease. The goal of this study was to compare three different surgical techniques used for the treatment of pterygium. METHOD: We propose a prospective and partly retrospective study on 167 cases of pterygium 151 were primary and 16 were recurrent, treated between 1 January, 1995 and 30 June, 1998. The surgical treatment used of 3 different techniques: pterygium excision for 111 eyes, pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft for 29 eyes, pterygium excision with application of mitomycin C for 27 eyes. Pterygium recurrence time.

PURPOSE: To define the amount of time necessary to follow patients after pterygium removal to identify a recurrence. METHODS: The authors reviewed patients who supposedly had a recurrence of their pterygium and analyzed the records to determine the duration of these recurrences. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-one known pterygium recurrences were identified from records. Those patients with frequent follow-up in whom recurrence could be determined to within 1 month were in group A, and those in whom the time of recurrence was indefinite were in group B. For patients in group A, there was an avera…

Popliteal pterygium syndrome.

A syndrome of popliteal pterygium, cleft lip-palate, lower lip pits, eyelid adhesions, genito-urinary anomalies and digital anomalies is presented as the Popliteal pterygium syndrome. The hereditary pattern appears to be an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. The pediatric otolaryngologist should be alert to this syndrome and will be consulted for airway and feeding problems as well as speech and hearing management. Because of the wide variability of expression of popliteal pterygium syndrome, careful physical evaluation of available family members sh…

Popliteal pterygium syndrome.

Popliteal pterygium syndrome (PPS) is a rare congenital disorder consisting of limb, genital, and orofacial malformations. Multiple pterygium syndrome.

The multiple pterygium syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterised by arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, pterygia of the neck, fingers, and antecubital, popliteal, and intercrural areas, growth retardation, and facial, vertebral, and genital anomalies. We present two unrelated patients of 17 and 6 years of age, respectively, affected with this condition. We describe the natural history of their disorder since birth and review the spectrum of phenotypic variation of the multiple pterygium syndrome in 25 published cases.

Familial pterygium syndrome.

Two sisters affected with the same disorder are described. They had webbing of the neck, the antecubital fossae and the popliteal regions, together with flexion deformities of the limb joints and anomalies of the vertebrae. Eight other cases are known. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive mode.

Multiple pterygium syndrome.

After treating a 12-year-old patient with multiple pterygium syndrome, we ascertained the minimal diagnostic criteria of pterygia in the neck, axilla, antecubital, and even popliteal areas; evidence supports autosomal recessive inheritance for this syndrome.

[Pterygium: allergic etiology?].

Pterygium is a wedge-shaped fibrovascular growth of conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea. The etiopathogenesis of pterygium is still not fully elucidated. Exposure to ultraviolet light is suggested as one of the most important factors contributing to pterygium development. However, other factors including allergens, harmful chemical substances, wind, dust and pollens also may contribute to its development. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of immune reactions on the pathogenesis of pterygium.
