The most important publications of the past year in echocardiography.

We review the published literature on clinical echocardiography of the past year. Key topics were valvular heart disease, in particular aortic stenosis, and the imaging requirements for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Three-dimensional echocardiography and deformation imaging have yielded important new insights in valvular heart disease. Other key fields have been assessment of heart failure, in particular heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and the relationship of this condition with diastolic dysfunction and left atrial function. Functional imaging of cardiomyopathies wa

Trend analysis of medical publications about LGBT persons: 1950-2007.

Although there are currently at least 6 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in the United States, there are no prior studies analyzing how this group is represented in the medical literature. An examination of published LGBT topics over a 57-year period was performed using OvidSP. A total of 21,728 publications was analyzed for topic using information from the title, keywords, subject headings, and abstracts. Several trends became apparent. The largest proportion of LGBT publications (31.78%) was devoted to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), y…

Novel patent publications on high-affinity nicotinic acid receptor agonists.

BACKGROUND: Nicotinic acid (NA) has been used as a drug to treat dyslipidemia for > 50 years. In outcome clinical trials, NA displayed remarkable efficacy in patients with cardiovascular diseases by modifying lipid profiles that results in reduced morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, NA induces vasodilation (flushing) that undermines treatment compliance. In addition, high-dose treatment is required presumably owing to the poor pharmacokinetic properties of NA. The identification of the high-affinity NA receptor, namely G-protein coupled receptor 109A (GPR109A), led to further understan

Bibliometric analysis of biomedical publications on SSRI during 1980-2000.

We performed a bibliometric study of the scientific publications referring to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The database used was EMBASE: Psychiatry. We applied the principal bibliometric indicators: Price's and Bradford's laws on the increase or dispersion of scientific literature, Lotka's law on the productivity of authors, the participation index (PaI) of countries, the productivity index (PI) of authors, and the collaboration index. By means of manual coding, documents were classified according to type of study and to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disor…

Higher citation rates of network research publications in Pediatrics education.

OBJECTIVE: Publications of medical education research networks have been associated with higher rigor and higher-level outcomes. We sought to determine whether they also receive more citations than comparable papers. METHODS: We compared citation rates for pediatric education articles published from studies by the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Longitudinal Educational Assessment Research Network (APPD LEARN) with other pediatric education papers, non-pediatric education papers, non-education pediatric papers, and non-education non-pediatric papers, controlling for journal, issue,…

Insights Into JKMS Submissions and Medical Journal Publications in Korea.

We analyzed the publication and submission statuses of Korean medical journals from 2010 to 2024, amidst challenges impacting researchers. Data from 58 domestic journals identified through the 2023 JCR database were used to assess publication status, while data from the Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS) were utilized to examine submission status. The proportion of published original articles by domestic authors decreased by 3% in 2024 compared to 2023. Submissions to JKMS also decreased overall, except for slight increases in May and October 2024. In contrast, international submissions

A concise history of echocardiography: timeline, pioneers, and landmark publications.

Echocardiography is less than 70 years old, and many major advances have occurred within living memory, but already some pioneering contributions may be overlooked. In order to consider what circumstances have been common to the most successful innovations, we have studied and here provide a timeline and summary of the most important developments in transthoracic and transoesophageal ultrasound imaging and Doppler techniques, as well as in intravascular ultrasound and imaging in paediatric cardiology. The entries are linked to a comprehensive list of first publications and to a collection of f…

Sleep Disorders Among Holocaust Survivors: A Review of Selected Publications.

After World War II, traumatic after effects often caused persistent sleep disorders for Holocaust survivors (HSs). This is a review of studies reporting on sleep disturbances and nightmares (as primary or secondary outcomes) among HSs between 1939 and 2015, conducted in various countries and contexts (clinical settings, pension claims, community surveys, sleep laboratories). Most studies revealed various sleep disturbances among HSs. Some studies found those disturbances in the absence of clinical disorders. Both men and women reported similar frequencies of sleep disturbances, although posttr
