Modeling Health Effects of Alternative Treatment Options during Surgical Delay to Inform Prioritization of Surgical Care.

ObjectivesTo estimate the health effects of temporarily substituting surgeries with alternative treatments to inform discussions on prioritization strategies during surgical capacity constraints.Study Setting and DesignThis study was conducted in the context of the Dutch health care system. We used a decision model to estimate the health effects of temporal substituting surgery with an alternative treatment option for 11 diseases. Model outcome was the number of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with the alternative treatment during the waiting period for surgery. For each "dis

Estimation of State and district-specific disability adjusted life years (DALYs) due to tuberculosis for Kerala, India, 2017-2020.

Background & objectives Tuberculosis (TB) control programmes routinely use indicators like incidence and mortality. A single indicator, like disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) may yield a more comprehensive burden estimate. This study attempted to estimate the state and district-specific TB burden in Kerala. Methods The sole data source for these computations was the Ni-kshay, notification register for 2017 to 2020, Kerala. Age of the patient and outcome are available in the register. Notified incident TB/1000, the median age of onset of TB, case fatality due to TB, and the median age of m

Current and projected trends in rheumatoid arthritis among postmenopausal women in the U.S.: a population-based analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, with projections to 2035.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder with a high prevalence among postmenopausal women (PMW), and it is associated with substantial functional impairment and reduced quality of life. To inform targeted prevention strategies for high-risk populations in the U.S., a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of disease burden in this population is needed. We conducted a quantitative analysis of the prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of RA among PMW (PMWRA) in the U.S. from 1990 to 2021. In addition, disease t

Global burden of smoking-attributable digestive cancers from 1990 to 2021: insights from the Global Burden of Disease study.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is causally linked to multiple cancers. We present global, regional, and national estimates of smoking-attributable digestive cancers (SADC) burden from 1990 to 2021 to inform smoking policy and cancer control. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, encompassing five subtypes of digestive cancers across 204 countries and territories. We estimated the mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of SADC. Temporal trends were quantified by calculating the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of age-standardized rates. RESULTS:

National Institutes of Health Research Funding Inequities of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders: A Predictive Analysis From 2011 Through 2023.

CONTEXT: The burden of vastly different diseases has been used to predict National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding, typically including only 1 year of data. A multi-year analysis of related diseases would provide a more accurate assessment of which diseases are funded appropriately compared to their burden, enabling targeted lobbying efforts and policy changes to ensure equitable funding. OBJECTIVES: Determining under- or over-funded psychiatric and neurological diseases over a 13-year period. DESIGN: This ecological study utilized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) to quanti

Global burden of acute viral hepatitis and its association with socioeconomic development status, 1990-2019.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Acute viral hepatitis (AVH) represents an important global health problem; however, the progress in understanding AVH is limited because of the priority of combating persistent HBV and HCV infections. Therefore, an improved understanding of the burden of AVH is required to help design strategies for global intervention. METHODS: Data on 4 major AVH types, including acute hepatitis A, B, C, and E, excluding D, were collected by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. Age-standardized incidence rates and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates for AVH were extrac

Burden and long-term impact of pulmonary embolism on health-related quality of life: a matched cohort study.

AIMS: It has not been conclusively established whether and to what extent pulmonary embolism (PE) affects health-related quality of life (HrQoL). We aimed to assess the long-term independent association of PE with HrQoL to provide reference values for interventional studies and support quantification of the burden of PE in terms of quality- or disability-adjusted life years (QALYs and DALYs). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1005 patients from a prospective multicenter study, followed 3 and 12 months after PE, were successfully matched to 3058 individuals from the general population of the sam

A review of health-related quality of life associated with pneumococcal disease: pooled estimates by age and type of disease.

BACKGROUND: Estimates in the research literature on the health-related quality of life (QOL) associated with pneumococcal disease exhibit variation. It complicates the selection of estimates in modeling projects that evaluate the health impact and economic value of the prevention and treatment. This study reviewed the literature and developed pooled QOL estimates associated with pneumococcal disease states. METHODS: We searched peer-reviewed literature for studies that reported pneumococcal disease-related QOL estimates. For each study, we extracted QOL estimates and categorized by age group

Health metrics for helminth infections.

Health metrics based on health-adjusted life years have become standard units for comparing the disease burden and treatment benefits of individual health conditions. The Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) and the Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY) are the most frequently used in cost-effect analyses in national and global health policy discussions for allocation of health care resources. While sometimes useful, both the DALY and QALY metrics have limitations in their ability to capture the full health impact of helminth infections and other 'neglected tropical diseases' (NTDs). Gaps in curre

Global trends and regional variations in PCa burden: A focus on China's rapid growth.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading malignancy among men globally, with varying incidence across regions. While high-income countries have effectively controlled PCa through early detection and treatment, middle- and low-income regions, including China, are experiencing rising incidence rates. Understanding these trends is crucial for effective prevention and management. METHODS: Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, we analyzed global and regional trends in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), years lived with d

Health State Utility Values in Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Patient preferences are increasingly important in informing clinical and policy decisions. Health-state utility values (HSUVs) are quantitative measures of people's preferences over different health states. In schizophrenia, there is no clarity about HSUVs across the symptoms' severity spectrum. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize the literature on HSUVs in people with schizophrenia. METHODS: We searched Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, EconLit, The Cochrane Library, and specialized databases. The studies reporting HSUVs in people with schizophrenia were selected and pooled in a rando

Placing a monetary value on the human health component of zoonotic diseases: A methodological note with an application to cysticercosis in Africa.

Ideally, policies aiming to tackle zoonotic diseases in animals and reduce the burden of disease in humans should be based on an assessment of the cost and benefits of alternative interventions. However, while the cost of actions targeting diseases in animals and humans and the benefits in terms of increased livestock production can be monetized, it is a challenge to monetize improvements in the quality of life or to life expectancy extensions in humans in zoonotic policy evaluations. This paper proposes a method to monetize the human health benefits derived from zoonotic disease reduction and
