The study on 198 Shigella strains isolated from dysentery patients and cultures from 3 different dysentery foci showed a possibility of intraspecies typing of the causative agents according to the R factor incompatibility groups with regard to the antibiotic resistance spectra. BACKGROUND: Complicated and uncomplicated Type B aortic dissection (TBAD) need distinct therapeutic pathways. While TBAD is a complex and dynamic clinical entity, ∼75% of cases present as uncomplicated initially. However, up to half of these may progress to complicated TBAD, highlighting the need for better prognostic tools. In this case series, we report a novel potential radiological risk factor for progression, the 'R sign', to contribute to a deeper understanding of this disease's behaviour.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether a specific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup is implicated in the pathogenesis of intrauterine adhesion (IUA).
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were collected from 486 women with (case group, n = 154) and without IUA (control group, n = 332) at the Women's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood, and the mtDNA haplogroups of Han women M, N and R were determined by sequencing hypervariable mtDNA segments and testing diagnostic polymorphisms in the mtDNA coding region.

It has been reported that serum vitamin B12 levels assayed by saturation analysis methods may give misleadingly high results, so much so that the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency may be obscured. This defect was ascribed largely to assays using a vitamin B12 binder other than pure intrinsic factor. We have studied the concentration of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGF-R) in 115 different malignant ovarian tumors (101 ovarian carcinomas) and EGF-like factors (EGF-F) in tissue extracts of 63 different ovarian carcinomas and 20 non-malignant tissues. 36% of ovarian carcinomas are EGF-R positive. Schistosomiasis hepatic fibrosis results from excessive deposition of extracellular matrix components which are produced from the activated hepatic stellate cells in liver. Cytokine network disorder is the essential cause of the development of schistosomiasis liver fibrosis. Transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) and interleukin 13 (IL-13) promote fibrosis through hepatic stellate cell membrane-specific receptor. This paper reviews the effects of TGF-beta1 type II (TGF-beta1 R II) receptor and IL-13 receptor alpha2 (IL-13 Ralpha2) on hepatic fibrosis.
