Sun-Safety Understanding Among Canadian Elementary Students: A Survey-Based Cohort Study Across Racial/Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Early promotion of sun-protective behavior may play a pivotal role in skin cancer prevention. School-based interventions have shown effectiveness in increasing sun-safety knowledge, yet few studies assess children's baseline perceptions before formal education. OBJECTIVE: To assess elementary students' baseline sun-safety perceptions before an educational session. METHODS: Elementary students completed online surveys before sun-safety presentations (May 2023-April 2024). Race/ethnicity data were collected for subgroup analyses. RESULTS: Among 260 respondents (mean age 12; 51.2%

Prevalence of concomitant rheumatologic diseases and autoantibody specificities among racial and ethnic groups in SLE patients.

OBJECTIVE: Leveraging the Manhattan Lupus Surveillance Program (MLSP), a population-based registry of cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related diseases, we investigated the proportion of SLE with concomitant rheumatic diseases, including Sjögren's disease (SjD), antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS), and fibromyalgia (FM), as well as the prevalence of autoantibodies in SLE by sex and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Prevalent SLE cases fulfilled one of three sets of classification criteria. Additional rheumatic diseases were defined using modified criteria based on data available in the MLS

Implications of Social Determinants of Health Characteristics on Fetal Growth Restriction Among Various Racial/Ethnic Groups.

OBJECTIVES: Current knowledge regarding the relationship between social determinants of health (SDOH) characteristics of hospitalized American pregnant women and fetal growth restriction (FGR) reveals a dearth in the literature. Therefore, we examined the impact of SDOH on FGR among hospitalized American women in this study. METHODS: Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) dataset for the years 2016-2018, we conducted this cross-sectional study. We conducted survey logistic regression to examine the association between SDOH factors and FGR, after adjusting for various hospitalization char

Ectopic Fat Depots and Coronary Artery Calcium in South Asians Compared With Other Racial/Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: South Asians have a low body mass index and high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) relative to other racial/ethnic groups. Radiographically detected ectopic fat distribution is better associated with CVD than body mass index. We assessed whether differences in ectopic fat depots explained differences in the prevalence/severity of coronary artery calcium (CAC), a predictor of incident CVD events, among South Asians compared with other racial/ethnic groups. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the associations of radiographically detected visceral, intermuscular, intrahepatic,

Mutual partner violence: mental health symptoms among female and male victims in four racial/ethnic groups.

This study examines racial/ethnic and sex differences in the prevalence of mutual intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health symptoms. The authors asked 676 university students in heterosexual relationships if they had experienced IPV, coercive victimization, and/or perpetration as well as symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, and somatization. Analyses were conducted separately for female and male respondents in four racial/ethnic groups, totaling eight groups (female and male groups each for African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and European Americans). Men, as compared t

Plasma p-tau217 and cognitive impairment: Evaluating biomarker equity across racial/ethnic groups in HABS-HD.

INTRODUCTION: Plasma phosphorylated tau 217 (p-tau217) is a leading blood-based biomarker of Alzheimer's disease. Its performance in underrepresented racial/ethnic groups remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: We analyzed 2798 participants from the Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities, including non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic adults. Multivariable logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic analyses assessed associations and discriminative accuracy between plasma p-tau217 and clinical cognitive impairment with racial/ethnic-specific thres

The structure and correlates of the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire among U.S. racial/ethnic groups.

Research on externalizing psychopathology has relied heavily on White samples to generate core knowledge, with few studies examining variability in its components, including grandiose narcissism, across racial/ethnic groups. This preregistered (https://osf.io/n4s3f/) study addressed the following research questions: (1) Is there evidence for measurement invariance of the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ) across racial/ethnic groups?; (2) Are there racial/ethnic group differences in (a) mean levels of the two NARQ subscales: admiration and rivalry, and (b) correlations be

Risk Trajectories of Type 2 Diabetes-Related Microvascular Complications Across Racial/Ethnic Groups Among Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) microvascular complications are a major public health issue that disproportionately affects racial/ethnic minorities in the US. We aimed to address the limited understanding of racial/ethnic disparities in the longitudinal natural history of microvascular complications over eight years among older adults with T2DM in the US and Canada. METHODS: From 10,251 participants in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) (2003-2009) trial, we derived 6323 participants. We examined racial/ethnic disparities of composite microvascular c

Prevalence and impact of diabetes on survival of patients with multiple myeloma in different racial groups.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is twice as common in Black individuals compared with in White individuals, and diabetes mellitus (DM) disproportionately affects Black patients. Although numerous studies have shown a correlation between DM and MM, this has not been studied in the context of race and in vivo mechanisms. We conducted a retrospective clinical study of 5383 patients with MM of which 15% had DM (White, 12% and Black, 25%). Multivariable Cox models showed reduced overall survival (OS) for patients with DM (hazard ratio, 1.27; 95% confidence interval, 1.11-1.47; P < .001). This appeared to be

Stereotypes About Political Attitudes and Coalitions Among U.S. Racial Groups: Implications for Strategic Political Decision-Making.

What are people's expectations of interracial political coalitions? This research reveals expectations of flexible interracial coalitions stemming from how policies and racial groups are viewed in terms of perceived status and foreignness. For policies seen as changing societal status (e.g., welfare), people expected Black-Hispanic political coalitions and viewed Asian Americans as more likely to align with Whites than with other minorities. For policies seen as impacting American identity (e.g., immigration), people expected Asian-Hispanic coalitions and that Black Americans would align with …

The efficacy and safety of canagliflozin across racial groups in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Canagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, enhances urinary glucose excretion through an insulin-independent mode of action, and improves glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study assessed the efficacy and safety of canagliflozin across racial groups. METHODS: The efficacy of canagliflozin 100 mg and 300 mg was evaluated by racial group using data pooled from four placebo-controlled phase 3 studies and two placebo-controlled sub-studies of a population of patients with inadequately controlled T2DM (N = 4158).
