The coronavirus pandemic has exposed a global tendency throughout history to blame immigrants for propagating epidemics. Chinese individuals were thus targeted during past public health crises in Peru, but during the current coronavirus pandemic racist notions painting people of Chinese descent as "agents of contagion" diminished significantly. Here we examine three major epidemics (yellow fever, the bubonic plague, and covid-19) to demonstrate the current and somewhat surprising shift in negative attitudes toward the Chinese community. Peruvians' refusal to embrace derogatory terms (the "Chin

This article presents the development and psychometric evaluation of the Internalized Racism in Asian Americans Scale (IRAAS), which was designed to measure the degree to which Asian Americans internalized hostile attitudes and negative messages targeted toward their racial identity. Items were developed on basis of prior literature, vetted through expert feedback and cognitive interviews, and administered to 655 Asian American participants through Amazon Mechanical Turk. Exploratory factor analysis with a random subsample (n = 324) yielded a psychometrically robust preliminary measurement mod…

Over the past two decades, thousands of studies have demonstrated that Blacks receive lower quality medical care than Whites, independent of … s evidence from several disciplines to further specify our original model and elaborate on the ways racism can interact with cognitive biases to affect clinicians' behavior and decisions and in turn, patient behavior and decisions. We then highlight avenues for intervention and make specific recommendations to medical care and grant-making organizations.

Racism, sexism, and homophobia do not fit into any current diagnostic category. The authors propose that those who engage in such behaviors display a form of psychopathology deserving of its own category. The common denominator seems to be intolerance. The authors explore the possibility of an intolerant personality disorder, outline likely symptoms, and suggest some possible treatment considerations.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States experience higher rates of preeclampsia incidence, severity, and case fatality than White women, which contributes to cardiovascular disease disparities. Differences in cardiometabolic risk factors do not fully explain this disparity, and there is growing consensus that racism may be a root cause. Few studies have evaluated associations between racism and preeclampsia among cohorts of exclusively Black women.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Black Women's Health Study, a follow-up study of ≈59 000 Black women in the United States established in 1…

The evidence that links structural racism to disparities in infant mortality across racial groups needs closer examination, given its central role in achieving health equity. We undertook a systematic review using four databases (MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, and SocINDEX) to determine whether structural racism is associated with infant mortality rates (IMR). The review used the PRISMA guidelines. Relevant articles between 1955 and 2024 were included. A narrative synthesis was conducted informed by critical race theory. Data quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal …

BACKGROUND: Gendered racial microaggressions adversely impact Black college women's mental health, but less is known about rural Black women's mental health.
OBJECTIVE: Examine the association between gendered racism, depression, and psychological distress.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 200 rural Black women from the Southeastern United States. Gendered racism was assessed using the Gendered Racial Microaggressions scale (GRMS). Linear regression was used to assess GRM subscales, depression (PHQ-9) and psychological distress (K6) as outcomes.
RESULTS: Of the 200, 21.5% report…

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a growing crisis consistently linked to adverse health. At the same time, race is strongly associated with homelessness risk. Thus, understanding and addressing racial disparities in homelessness is imperative for health equity. This study explores geographic variation in Black-to-White disparities in homelessness across the United States and examines how measures of local structural racism are associated with these inequities.
METHODS: The study sample included 259 urban and suburban communities. The dataset was constructed by merging estimates of sheltered, unshe…

INTRODUCTION: There is a research gap on how racism impacts the mental health of midwives in Ontario. Our aim was to conceptualize the impact of racism on racialized midwives in Ontario.
METHODS: Informed by constructivist grounded theory, we analyzed data contributed by racialized midwives in Ontario who participated in focus groups and interviews as part of a larger study about mental health. Participants had practiced midwifery within the past 15 months.
RESULTS: Seven participants from 2 focus groups and one individual interview were included. Our conceptualization, Hypervigilance: Being…

Structural gendered racism - the "totality of interconnectedness between structural racism and sexism" - is conceptualized as a fundamental cause of the persistent preterm birth inequities experienced by Black and Indigenous people in the United States. Our objective was to develop a state-level latent class measure of structural gendered racism and examine its association with preterm birth among all singleton live births in the US in 2019. Using previously-validated inequity indicators between White men and Black women across 9 domains (education, employment, poverty, homeownership, health i…

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current knowledge and identify gaps in the literature related to microaggression as an experience of racism and its influence on perinatal health outcomes.
DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed, Race Relations Abstracts, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Scopus using the keywords "micro-aggression" and "microaggression." Because microaggression is an all-encompassing term, we included articles that used keywords such as "racism," "prejudice," and/or "discrimination" because these terms are precursors to and touch on aspects of microaggression. We also include…

Tuberculosis incidence in the United States is declining, yet projections indicate that we will not eliminate tuberculosis in the 21st century. Incidence rates in regions serving the rural and urban poor, including recent immigrants, are well above the national average. People experiencing incarceration and homelessness represent additional key populations. Better engagement of marginalized populations will not succeed without first addressing the structural racism that fuels continued transmission. Examples include:(1)systematic underfunding of contact tracing in health departments serving re…

The consequences of racial microaggressions are most often discussed at an interpersonal level. In this article, we contend that microaggres … . We also present evidence that microaggressions play a role in protecting and reinforcing systemic racism. By obscuring systemic racism (e.g., false color blindness, denial of individual racism) and promoting ideas that maintain existing systemic inequalities (e.g., the myth of meritocracy, reverse-racism hostility), microaggressions provide cover and s …

African American women are disproportionately affected by multiple sexual and reproductive health conditions compared with women of other races/ethnicities. Research suggests that social determinants of health, including poverty, unemployment, and limited education, contribute to health disparities. However, racism is a probable underlying determinant of these social conditions. This article uses a socioecological model to describe racism and its impact on African American women's sexual and reproductive health. Although similar models have been used for specific infectious and chronic disease…

Episodes of racial prejudice emerging in the context of a psychoanalytic therapy suggest that racism can be thought of as a regressed state of transference, characterized by polarized representations of self and other, categorical thinking, and the predominance of splitting and projection as defenses. The author suggests that activation of racial hostility in the clinical situation occurs as a result of events and processes not atypical in an analytic process. Though such states occurring outside of the analytic context are more likely made conscious in certain situations and in certain person…

Teaching about domestic violence and racism is a formidable task that requires the inclusion of material that challenges dominant ideologies about race and gender. A recent training for police officers about domestic violence and racism serves as a good example of how challenging the task can be. Drawing from this 1-day police training, from existing pedagogical literature, and from the authors' collective experiences teaching about these issues, the authors address challenges encountered and propose strategies to mitigate them. The authors propose a multilevel approach to implementing strateg…
