Flying under the radar: Histoplasma capsulatum avoidance of innate immune recognition.

The dimorphic fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum takes advantage of the innate immune system, utilizing host macrophages as a proliferative niche while largely avoiding stimulation of signaling host receptors. As a result, innate immune cells are unable to control H. capsulatum on their own. Not all host phagocytes respond to H. capsulatum in the same way, with neutrophils and dendritic cells playing important roles in impeding fungal growth and initiating a protective TH1 response, respectively. Dendritic cells prime T-cell differentiation after internalization of yeasts via VLA-5 recepto

Radar-based inspiratory-to-expiratory time ratio estimation: a validation study.

Respiration is a key indicator of health and wellbeing, with metrics such as respiratory rate (RR), inspiratory time (TI), expiratory time (TE), and the inspiratory-to-expiratory time (I:E) ratio offering insights into conditions ranging from acute life-threatening and chronic diseases to symptom management. While traditional methods already measure these parameters with high accuracy, they still require contact-based sensors, limiting their practicality for continuous monitoring. This study evaluates radar as a non-contact alternative by validating multiple radar-derived respiratory metrics a

Efficient material selection for training occluded mmWave radar-based gesture recognisers.

Radar-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising approach for unobtrusive interaction. Unlike camera-based systems, radar sensors can detect gestures through opaque materials, enabling seamless embedding into various everyday objects. However, it remains unclear how to train models efficiently for robust gesture recognition through diverse materials. To investigate this, we collected a dataset of 17,520 gesture recordings performed through 73 everyday materials. By comparing several material-sampling and data-augmentation strategies, we found that a small carefully selected represent

Ultra-Wideband Radar-Based Sensing Poultry Litter Moisture Content Monitoring System.

High litter moisture content (LMC) in poultry houses is a primary driver of footpad dermatitis, elevated ammonia emissions, and bacterial proliferation. These conditions directly compromise broiler welfare and productivity. Existing monitoring methods, including oven-drying, contact-based sensors, and near-infrared spectroscopy, suffer from invasiveness, single-point limitation, or surface-only measurement. This study investigates ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar as a non-contact sensing modality for estimating the LMC of cedar wood shaving bedding under controlled laboratory conditions. A f

Under the radar: Examining how people experiencing homelessness sense impending disasters.

This study investigates the intersection of homelessness and disaster preparedness, focusing on how people experiencing homelessness (PEH) receive and respond to disaster-related information. The research emphasizes the critical roles of environmental cues and technology in alerting PEH to potential hazards. Environmental indicators, such as changes in the sky, wind patterns, and animal behavior, are commonly relied upon, although they can delay protective actions. Mobile phones serve as essential tools for accessing vital information, despite challenges related to affordability and charging a

Spatiotemporal Feature Learning for Daily-Life Cough Detection Using FMCW Radar.

Cough is a key symptom reflecting respiratory health, with its frequency and pattern providing valuable insights into disease progression and clinical management. Objective and reliable cough detection systems are therefore of broad significance for healthcare and remote monitoring. However, existing algorithms often struggle to jointly model spatial and temporal information, limiting their robustness in real-world applications. To address this issue, we propose a cough recognition framework based on frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar, integrating a deep convolutional neural netw

An Unobtrusive Fall Detection System Using Ceiling-mounted Ultra-wideband Radar.

Falls are among the most devastating events that can happen to an older person. Automatic fall detection systems aim to solve this problem by alerting carers and family the moment a fall occurs. This paper presents the development of an unobtrusive fall detection system using ultra-wideband (UWB) radar. The proposed system employed a ceiling-mounted UWB radar to avoid object occlusion and allow for flexible implementation. An innovative pre-processing method was developed to effectively enhance motion and reduce noise from raw UWB data. We designed a trial protocol composed of common types of

Radar Composite Reflectivity Reconstruction Based on FY-4A Using Deep Learning.

Weather radars are commonly used to track the development of convective storms due to their high resolution and accuracy. However, the coverage of existing weather radar is very limited, especially in mountainous and ocean areas. Geostationary meteorological satellites can provide near global coverage and near real-time observations, which can compensate for the lack of radar observations. In this paper, a deep learning method was used to estimate the radar composite reflectivity from observations of China's new-generation geostationary meteorological satellite FY-4A and topographic data. The

Dynamic Object Detection in Maritime Navigation Scenarios Based on Vision-Radar Fusion.

With the rapid development of intelligent navigation technologies, accurate dynamic object detection in complex maritime environments remains a critical challenge due to occlusion, scale variation, and multi-target interference. To address these issues, this study proposes a vision-radar fusion-based dynamic object detection method. A cross-modal feature mapping mechanism is developed to achieve deep integration of visual and radar information, and an augmented Lagrangian optimization strategy is introduced to enhance feature consistency and representation capability. Furthermore, an improved

Uncertainty analysis of initial orbit determination in the minimum radar admissible region.

The poor accuracy of the single solution of the initial orbit determination (IOD) affects the precise orbit determination, target matching and arc-segment correlation. This paper proposes a method for analyzing the uncertainty of the IOD results based on the Minimum Radar Admissible Region (MRAR), which describes the IOD results in the form of probability in the region bounded by the minimum admissible region. The MRAR can contain the real orbit state with a probability greater than 99.7%; the weight coefficients of each sampling point in the MRAR are calculated by using the Bayesian formula,

Comparative Accuracy of Millimeter-Wave Radar and Polysomnography in Sleep Apnea Detection.

BACKGROUND Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS) is a common and serious sleep disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep. Polysomnography is considered the gold standard for diagnosing OSAHS and evaluating its severity. However, traditional sensory monitoring methods, while effective, are often cumbersome, expensive, and unsuitable for home use. The present study introduces a non-sensory millimeter-wave radar sleep monitor, which provides a contactless, portable, and cost-effective alternative for assessing sleep apnea. The

Asymptomatic Low-Density Plasmodium falciparum Infections: Parasites Under the Host's Immune Radar?

A large body of evidence suggests that low parasite carriage in Plasmodium falciparum asymptomatic infection is required for the maintenance of malaria immunity. However, the fact that treating such infections has little to no impact on subsequent clinical malaria is rarely noted. In this paper, we review data and argue that low-density parasite carriage in asymptomatic infection may not support host immune processes and that parasites are virtually under the host's immunological radar. We also discuss factors that may be constraining parasitemia in asymptomatic infections from reaching the th

Making waves: Xanthates on the radar - Environmental risks and water quality impact.

Xanthates, derivatives of xanthic acid, are widely utilized across industries such as agrochemicals, rubber processing, pharmaceuticals, metallurgical, paper and mining to help separate metals from ore. Despite their prevalent use, many registered xanthates lack comprehensive information on potential risks to human health and the environment. The mining sector, a significant consumer of xanthates, drives demand. However, emissions into the environment remain poorly understood, especially concerning water quality. A recent EU parliamentary voting on water legislation highlights the urgency to a

Remote monitoring technologies in Alzheimer's disease: design of the RADAR-AD study.

BACKGROUND: Functional decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is typically measured using single-time point subjective rating scales, which rely on direct observation or (caregiver) recall. Remote monitoring technologies (RMTs), such as smartphone applications, wearables, and home-based sensors, can change these periodic subjective assessments to more frequent, or even continuous, objective monitoring. The aim of the RADAR-AD study is to assess the accuracy and validity of RMTs in measuring functional decline in a real-world environment across preclinical-to-moderate stages of AD compared to stan

Radiation following percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty to prevent restenosis (RADAR pilot trial).

OBJECTIVES: We wished to determine the feasibility and early safety of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) used following balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) to prevent restenosis. BACKGROUND: BAV for calcific aortic stenosis (AS) has been largely abandoned because of high restenosis rates, i.e., > 80% at 1 year. Radiation therapy is useful in preventing restenosis following vascular interventions and treating other benign noncardiovascular disorders. METHODS: We conducted a 20-patient, pilot study evaluating EBRT to prevent restenosis following BAV in elderly patients with calcific AS. To

Effect of the modified RADAR, No-touch, and conventional techniques on arteriovenous fistula outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Low primary patency rates represent a major problem of radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (RC-AVF). No-touch techniques and radial artery deviation and reimplantation (RADAR) were reported and used in RC-AVF creation. To enhance RC-AVF outcomes, we devised a modified RADAR technique and conducted a retrospective study comparing this approach with no-touch and conventional methods for RC-AVF creation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients undergoing RC-AVF creation for hemodialysis using either the modified RADAR, no-touch, or conventional technique between January 2023 and
