Chronic radiodermatitis injury after cardiac catheterization.

The authors present two patients in whom chronic radiodermatitis developed after repeated cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty procedures, with no indication of malignancy. In one patient, after other therapeutic methods were unsuccessful in alleviating his symptoms, the authors excised the lesion with wide surgical margins and skin grafted the area. The mere purpose was to free the patient from the unrelenting pain and discomfort. In this case, the authors achieved complete success in wound healing but only partial success in pain relief.

Radiodermatitis after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a recently introduced angiographic technique for achieving portal decompression. New invasive radiographic procedures such as TIPS can result in radiation exposure equal to that received by patients during radiation therapy. With these high doses of radiation, patients are at increased risk for radiodermatitis and long-term sequelae, such as scarring and carcinoma. Ours is the first reported case of radiodermatitis after TIPS.

Acute radiodermatitis after radiofrequency catheter ablation.

Radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation is used in the treatment of a variety of arrhythmias. This report describes the development of acute radiodermatitis after two prolonged RF catheter ablation procedures for supraventricular tachycardia. It also reviews the characteristics and treatment of radiation-induced skin reactions.

Prevention and treatment of acute and chronic radiodermatitis.

More than half the number of patients with cancer, who are treated with radiotherapy, will have radiodermatitis at some point during their treatment. Radiodermatitis either occurs early on in the treatment period or appears months or up to several years later. Acute radiodermatitis is a burn injury that varies in severity according to both treatment and inherent patient factors. Most acute radiodermatitis reactions resolve after several weeks but some reactions persist and can cause complications. Late-onset radiodermatitis is characterized by telangiectasia that forms on atrophic and fragile …

Topical antioxidants in radiodermatitis: a clinical review.

Radiation-induced skin toxicity is the most prevalent side effect of radiation therapy. Not only does it have a significant effect on patients' quality of life, but it also results in poor follow-up and early termination of radiotherapy treatment. Several skin care practices and topical applications have been studied in the field of radiodermatitis, including skin washing, topical steroids, and mechanical skin barriers. Aside from these methods, many patients turn to complementary and alternative medicine for the prevention and treatment of radiodermatitis. Many of these alternative therapies …

[Chronic radiodermatitis--a historical and current diagnosis].

Chronic radiodermatitis was already diagnosed a few years after the discovery of X-rays. Despite the fact that protection should be known to be necessary to avoid radiodermatitis, cases of chronic radiodermatitis still occur. The present case report describes a nurse who endured years of direct hand exposure, leading to chronic radiodermatitis ten years after cessation of exposure.
