From 1985 to 1990, six patients were treated for ipsilateral fractures of the scaphoid and radius. All these injuries resulted from falls from a substantial height, with multiple injuries occurring in all patients. Two of the patients had minimally displaced fractures (1.0 mm), whereas the other four patients had moderately displaced scaphoid fractures (2.0 mm). The treatment for fracture of the distal radius was dependent on the fracture type, but all the scaphoid fractures were treated with internal fixation. All the fractures united, with the radial fractures healing in 6 weeks and the scap

Attitudes to the treatment of distal radial fracture are now more critical than previously, especially where intraarticular fracture is concerned. Inadequate primary reduction and such complications as redislocation or dystrophic problems lead to poor results. Quantification of fracture instability is becoming increasingly important in fracture classification, determination of the indications for the different treatment modalities and management. Accurate anatomical reduction also improves later function. The quality of alignment attained during the treatment depends on the quality of reductio

A study of 79 children with malunion of forearm fractures is presented. Age at the time of injury, the site of the fracture and the degree and direction of angulation at union were correlated with loss of forearm rotation at review 3.5 to 6 years later. Some guidelines are proposed for the acceptability of angular deformity at union, importance being placed on the avoidance of radial deviation of the radius, and the maintenance of the interosseous gap between the shafts of the radius and ulna.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of distal radius fractures treated by percutaneous fixation using distal radius-ulna pinning and to assess its effectiveness especially for preventing fracture settling.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 18 distal radius fractures (15 AO type A2 and 3 AO type C1). Range of motion and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores were evaluated. We measured radiographic parameters at the final follow-up and compared them with those on immediate postoperative x-rays.
RESULTS: All fractures united and average time to initial he

This study is to assess the effectiveness and outcome of the AO titanium volar distal radius plate (Synthes) in the treatment of peri-articular volar rim fractures of the distal radius. It was conducted on 22 patients with distal radius fractures who underwent open reduction, internal fixation using the AO titanium volar distal radius plate between July 1998 and December 1999 at the Changi General Hospital. The radiographs of the patients were analysed upon fracture union and assessment of wrist function was done using Gartland and Werley criteria. There were four extra-articular AO Type A2(1)

Distal radius fracture (DRF) is arguably the most common upper extremity fracture resulting from a fall accident. These clinical practice guidelines (CPG) were developed to guide all aspects of the management of DRF by physical therapists and other rehabilitation practitioners, such as certified hand therapists. This CPG employed a systematic review methodology to locate, appraise, and synthesize contemporary evidence while developing practice recommendations for determining the prognosis of outcomes, examination, and interventions while managing individuals with DRF. The quality of the primar

A triplane fracture is so named because of the three planes traversed by the fracture line. These are physeal fractures that result from injury during the final phase of maturation and cessation of growth. This fracture pattern typically involves the distal tibia. We present a rare case of a triplane fracture involving the distal radius.

Simultaneous fractures of the distal radius and scaphoid is an uncommon wrist injury. During the period 1980 to 1993, 23 patients with a median age of 39 years were treated for this injury. The median follow-up period was 7 years. All scaphoid fractures were undisplaced and located in the waist or distal third. An extraarticular distal radial fracture was observed in 15 wrists. A below elbow cast including the thumb was applied in 18 wrists for a mean duration of 9 weeks, and operative treatment was used in only 5 patients. All scaphoid fractures healed without complications. During conservati

Background: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are a common injury with fracture parameters guiding surgical treatment. Palmar plating is the most common method of fixation in patients needing surgical fixation. However, in fractures with a complete or nearly intact volar cortex, reduction of the fracture fragments may be challenging with the palmar approach. We use a novel Z-osteotomy technique to address this issue and report on our outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospective review of all patients where a volar Z-osteotomy technique was used. We assessed pre-, intra- and postoperative radiograph

Fractures of the distal radius show a wide spectrum of different fracture patterns. Although standard X‑ray images are sufficient for extra-articular fractures, the exact analysis of intra-articular fractures requires the use of computed tomography (CT) with coronal, sagittal and axial sectional images. The classification is based on the Working Group for Osteosynthesis Questions (AO) criteria. The treatment strategy can be more precisely defined by a CT-based classification. Special attention must be paid to the presence of the key corners, as they have a high risk for primary or secondary di

Background: High-energy distal radius fractures have not been as well studied as the more common osteoporotic fractures. Differences between these two groups of fractures have implications on the prevention and clinical management of such injuries. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients in our institution who presented with distal radius fractures within the period of a year. Demographic data, injury mechanism, fracture classification, associated injuries and work-related status were obtained and analysed. Results: High energy fractures made up 27.1% of the cases. Falls

Distal radius fractures have a high incidence among both young and elderly patients, and in many instances require operative intervention. When operative intervention is employed, adequate pain management is essential to decrease postoperative complications, such as chronic pain and disability, while minimizing the risk of prolonged opioid use and dependence. Strategies to optimize pain management include regional anesthesia, preoperative dosing of medication, multimodal regimens, long-acting selective opioids at the time of surgery, corticosteroids, and non-pharmacologic therapies.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are a common type of fracture. For patients treated with closed reduction with splinting, a period of rehabilitation is still required after the removal of the splint. However, there is a general lack of attention and low compliance to rehabilitation training during this period, so it is necessary to build a rehabilitation training monitoring system to improve the efficiency of patients' rehabilitation.
METHODS: A wearable rehabilitation training wristband was proposed, which could be used in the patient's daily rehabilitation training scenario and could re

BACKGROUND: The association of scaphoid or other carpal bone fractures with distal radius fractures is frequently reported, whereas few studies have described pisiform malalignment associated with distal radius fractures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency and characteristics of pisiform malalignment associated with distal radius fractures.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study by reviewing the data of 152 consecutive patients with a mean age of 63 years who were treated surgically for distal radius fractures during a five-year period. We evaluated the pisotrique

PURPOSE: Loss of full wrist range of motion is common after treatment of distal radius fractures. Loss of wrist extension limiting functional activities, although uncommon, can occur after volar plating of distal radius fractures. Unlike other joints in which capsular release is a common form of treatment for stiffness, this has been approached with caution in the wrist owing to concerns for carpal instability. We tested the null hypothesis that hardware removal and open volar capsular release would not lead to improved upper extremity-specific patient-reported outcome (Disabilities of the Arm

Nerve damage is a common complication of distal radius fractures. It may be a result of the injury event or be iatrogenic. It is the source of disability and potential handicap. There is little published data on this topic and no study has validated the strategies needed to prevent or manage these nerve-related complications. There is no consensus on treatment. Prevention requires a good knowledge of the various surgical approaches and rigorous fracture fixation technique. The objective of this article is to take stock of recent data from the scientific literature.
