Large-scale survey of a neglected agent of sparganosis Spirometra erinaceieuropaei (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in wild frogs in China.

BACKGROUND: In China, frogs play an understudied role in the spread of human sparganosis (caused by the larval form of Spirometra). However, our knowledge about the prevalence of sparganum infection in frogs remains fragmented, and the taxonomic identification of the parasite is still controversial. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The prevalence of sparganum infection in wild frogs was surveyed at 145 geographical locations from 28 of the 34 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities in China for six years. The collected sparganum isolates from the different locations were subjected to molec

Pathology and Case Definition of Severe Perkinsea Infection of Frogs.

Severe Perkinsea infection (SPI) is an emerging disease of frogs responsible for mass mortalities of tadpoles across the United States. It is caused by protozoa belonging to the phylum Perkinsozoa that form a distinct group referred to as the Pathogenic Perkinsea Clade of frogs. In this work, we provide detailed description of gross and histologic lesions from 178 naturally infected tadpoles, including 10 species from 22 mortality events and 6 amphibian health monitoring studies from diverse geographic areas. On external examination, we observed abdominal distension (10, 5.6%), cutaneous eryth

Functional evolution of jumping in frogs: Interspecific differences in take-off and landing.

Ancestral frogs underwent anatomical shifts including elongation of the hindlimbs and pelvis and reduction of the tail and vertebral column that heralded the transition to jumping as a primary mode of locomotion. Jumping has been hypothesized to have evolved in a step-wise fashion with basal frogs taking-off with synchronous hindlimb extension and crash-landing on their bodies, and then their limbs move forward. Subsequently, frogs began to recycle the forelimbs forward earlier in the jump to control landing. Frogs with forelimb landing radiated into many forms, locomotor modes, habitats, and

Patterns of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis transmission between tadpoles in a high-elevation rainforest stream in tropical Australia.

The highly virulent fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) poses a global threat to amphibian biodiversity. Streams and other water bodies are central habitats in the ecology of the disease, particularly in rainforests where they may transport and transmit the pathogen and harbor infected tadpoles that serve as reservoir hosts. We conducted an experiment using larval green-eyed tree frogs Litoria serrata in semi-natural streamside channels to test the hypotheses that (1) the fungus can be transmitted downstream in stream habitats and (2) infection affects tadpole growth and mouthp

Experimental transmission of Hepatozoon clamatae (Apicomplexa: Adeleida) to the wood frog, Rana sylvatica, and to the mosquito Culex pipiens.

Hepatozoon clamatae naturally infects the erythrocytes of green frogs (Rana clamitans), bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana), and northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) in northeastern North America and uses the mosquito Culex territans as a definitive host. In this study, we show that the wood frog, Rana sylvatica, supports merogonic development, but not gamogonic development, of this protozoan parasite, and that the mosquito Culex pipiens serves as an experimental definitive host for sporogonic development. Two wood frogs were each force-fed Cx. territans, containing oocysts of H. clamatae in their M

The crab-eating frog Rana cancrivora: serum mineral concentrations and histology of the ultimobranchial gland and the parathyroid gland.

In the crab-eating frog Rana cancrivora, taken from a full-strength seawater pond, the in situ levels of serum Na, Cl, K, Ca, Mg, Pi, urea, and osmolarity were examined. The levels were higher than those usually reported for freshwater anurans. However, values for the monovalent salts, urea, and osmolarity were lower than those reported by Gordon et al. (1961, J. Exp. Biol. 38, 659-678) following immersion of this species in 80% seawater for 7 days. The histological features of the ultimobranchial gland and parathyroid gland were coincident with those known in usual freshwater frogs, in spite

[Effects of local anesthetics (procaine, tetracaine) on slow calcium permeability and contraction of frog skeletal muscle fiber].

Slow inward calcium current and contraction were simultaneously recorded from isolated muscle fibres. When the release of calcium form the SR was blocked by local anaesthetics (Procaine, Tetracaine), the strict correlation between these two parameters was no longer obtained, suggesting that a calcium induced calcium release mechanism is necessary for the activation of the contractile proteins by the slow inward calcium current.

Fatal human infection with mesocercariae of the trematode Alaria americana.

A fatal human infection with mesocercafiae of Alaria americana is described. Several thousand mesocercariae were estimated to be present in the peritoneal cavity, bronchial aspirate, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, pancreas, retroperitoneal adipose tissue, spinal cord, spleen, and stomach. Nine days from the onset of symptoms death resulted from asphyxiation due to extensive pulmonary hemorrhage probably caused by immun-mediated mechanisms. Circumstances suggest the victim probably ate inadequately cooked frog legs while hiking. Mesocercariae penetrated through the stomach wal

Hyaloklossia Labbé, 1896 (Alveolata: Apicomplexa) in frogs: Description of a new species and proposing a new subfamily to accommodate these enigmatic parasites.

Hyaloklossia Labbé ,1896 (Alveolata: Apicomplexa) is a monotypic genus of renal coccidia found in anurans, particularly in the edible frog Pelophylax kl. esculentus (Amphibia: Anura: Ranidae), distributed in different parts of Europe. Here we propose a new Hyaloklossia species from the Tokyo daruma pond frog, Pelophylax porosus porosus. The coccidium detected in the renal tissue of P. p. porosus shared some morphological characteristics with the type species, Hyaloklossia lieberkuehni (Labbé, 1894), reported from P. kl. esculentus. However, in addition to size differences in several oocyst and…

Female frogs communicate with males through blinking.

Blinking is a behavior unique to animal taxa with motile eyelids, such as most amphibians and reptiles as well as all birds and mammals1. Eyelid movement has physiological functions, such as lubricating the cornea and washing away dust, but its potential signaling functions are not well understood1,2. The use of eyeblinks as a social signal is currently thought to be restricted to some primates, especially humans and their companion animals, but has not been verified in other taxa1,3,4. Here, through field observation and experiments, we demonstrate that female concave-eared torrent frogs (Odo

Effects of temperature on metamorphosis and endochondral ossification in Rana chensinensis tadpoles.

Temperature is one of the important factors affecting the growth, development, and metamorphosis of amphibians. Endochondral ossification during metamorphosis plays a crucial role in amphibian survival and adaptation on land. In this study, we explored the effects of different temperature treatments on the growth, development, and endochondral ossification of Rana chensinensis tadpoles during metamorphosis. The results showed that high temperature exposure may affect the skeletal development of tadpoles during metamorphosis, such as reduction of bone length and ossification of limbs, thyroid g

Effects of cadmium exposure on thyroid gland and endochondral ossification in Rana zhenhaiensis.

Discovery of elevated concentrations of cadmium in the natural environment has increased awareness because of their potential threats. Amphibians are negatively affected due to their moderate sensitivity to cadmium. Here, we conduct acute and subchronic toxicity tests to examine whether, and to what extent, cadmium exposure disturbs metamorphosis, growth, and kinetic ability of Rana zhenhaiensis. We set different concentration treatment groups for the subchronic toxicity test (0, 10, 40, 160 μg Cd L-1). Our findings demonstrate that cadmium exposure reduces growth parameters and the cumulative

Sex chromosome evolution from a heteromorphic to a homomorphic system by inter-population hybridization in a frog.

Sex chromosomes generally evolve from a homomorphic to heteromorphic state. Once a heteromorphic system is established, the sex chromosome system may remain stable for an extended period. Here, we show the opposite case of sex chromosome evolution from a heteromorphic to a homomorphic system in the Japanese frog Glandirana rugosa. One geographic group, Neo-ZW, has ZZ-ZW type heteromorphic sex chromosomes. We found that its western edge populations, which are geographically close to another West-Japan group with homomorphic sex chromosomes of XX-XY type, showed homozygous genotypes of sex-linke

Occurrence of parotoid glands in tadpoles of the tropical frog, Clinotarsus curtipes and their role in predator deterrence.

Tadpoles of the tropical bicolored frog, Clinotarsus curtipes are unique in having parotoid glands secreting a white viscous fluid and are structurally similar to granular glands from other amphibians. To ascertain the involvement of these glands and their secretion in predator deterrence, it was tested against a predatory fish, Clarias gariepinus, using a paired choice behavioral assay. The results showed that the fish avoid eating C. curtipes tadpoles when paired with tadpoles of a sympatric species, Sylvirana temporalis. While the fish fed on C. curtipes tadpoles whose parotoid glands were

Myiasis by Lucilia silvarum (Calliphoridae) in amphibian species in boreal Alberta, Canada.

We report myiasis by Lucilia silvarum with an overall prevalence of 0.9% in amphibian populations in boreal Alberta. In the period 1998--1999, we documented L. silvarum infestations in wild populations of wood frog (Rana sylvatica), boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), and Canadian toad (B. hemiophrys). We believe this is the first record of this parasite from boreal and Canadian toads. Almost all previous records of L. silvarum parasitism in North America indicate that myiasis is fatal to an anuran host. Here, we provide the first record of adult individ

Islets and diffuse endocrine component in the pancreas of three red frogs species: relationships between endocrine and exocrine tissue.

The endocrine pancreas of three red frogs was studied immunohistochemically. It consisted of islets and diffuse endocrine cells. The islets showed a mammalian-like arrangement with a central core of B cells and a peripheral mantle of A/PP cells. A few D and VIP cells were also present. Several regulatory peptides were co-localized in the same endocrine cells by consecutive sections and double-labeling studies. The A/PP cells were formed by subpopulations of cells showing various types of immunoreactivity and varying degrees of immunolabeling. Generally, glucagon/pancreatic polypeptide, glucago
