The reaginic antibody response to alum-precipitated ovalbumin (OA) and the dialyzed water-soluble extracts of ragweed (DWSR) and Alternaria tenuis (DWST) in several strains of rats appeared to be wholly an IgE response. Wistar rats of the inbred CPB-WE and the random bred Cpb:WU strains have been used in neuroanatomical studies. In both groups of rats a high incidence of hydrocephalus was observed. In the CPB-WE rats the ventricular dilatation was accompanied by optic tract lesions and microphthalmia. The present report describes the gross and microscopic findings in these rats and discusses the possible aetiology.

A previous report showed that infection with the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis stimulates a basophilia as well as an eosinophilia in the blood of August rats. Rat swimming behaviors have been productive in both sleep research and neuropharmacology. In this report, both of these areas are addressed in the context of inbred strain effects. Thirty-two rats from three stocks were tested in a seven day, repeated measures design. Each rat swam for 5 min each day in shallow 25 degrees C water. Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is the causative agent of Rift Valley fever, a widespread disease of domestic animals and humans in sub-Saharan Africa. Laboratory rats have frequently been used as an animal model for studying the pathogenesis of Rift Valley fever. The nerve allograft response between closely and distantly related inbred strains of rats was investigated. Two congenic strains of RCS rats, RCS-p/+ and RCS-c, have been developed that differ from the parental strain at genetic loci affecting pigmentation. Inbred RCS rats are pink-eyed, while RCS-p/+ rats produce segregating litters of pink-eyed (p/p) and black-eyed (p/+) offspring, and RCS-c rats are albinos. All the strains are homozygous for the mutant form of the retinal dystrophy gene. The black eye pigment in RCS-p/+ rats slows the progression of the retinal degeneration by about 10 days in the posterior retina and by about 30-35 days in the peripheral retina in the superior half of the eye.
