Linkage of the hooded (h), agouti (A), and diabetes insipidus (di) genes was found in (ACI X DI)F1 X DI backcross rats. The genetic map distance A-di for females and for males was 19 +/- 5 and 28 +/- 5 cM, respectively. However, this difference was not significant. The combined data showed the map distance to be 25 +/- 4 cM. The three-point cross showed the following corrected distances and order of genes: h-42 +/- 4-A-25 +/- 4-di. However, the linkage of h and A, although significant (chi 2 = 9.03, P less than 0.001), is only tentative and must be confirmed by additional studies.

Recently, we have identified a recessive mutation, an abnormal coat appearance in the BXH6 strain, a member of the HXB/BXH set of recombinant inbred (RI) strains. The RI strains were derived from the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and Brown Norway rat (BN-Lx) progenitors. Abnormal circling behavior in rodents is usually attributed to vestibular dysfunction. In rats, all circling mutants described previously have inner ear defects resulting in auditory and vestibular dysfunctions. Brattleboro rats were housed singly in metabolic cages and continuously infused with saline. Timed urine collections were analyzed for Na+ and K+; oxytocin (OT)-like material was estimated by RIA. Albino mice and rats have elevated dark-adapted thresholds compared to normally pigmented animals. The absolute dark-adapted incremental threshold for black mice is about 1.5 log units lower than the threshold for albino mice when measured by single-unit recordings from the superior colliculus.
