Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute self-limited exanthem characterized by oval erythematous patches with scale and may be difficult to differentiate from secondary syphilis. A rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test can be used to rule in secondary syphilis with high sensitivity and specificity. OBJECTIVES: In June 2017, Bio-Rad Laboratories received US Food and Drug Administration clearance for its BioPlex 2200 Syphilis Total & RPR (rapid plasma reagin) assay. It is the first fully automated treponemal/nontreponemal multiplex flow immunoassay, simultaneously detecting Treponema pallidum and reagin antibodies and an RPR titer. Reaginic antibody production by Hypoderma lineatum and H bovis larval antigens were evaluated in three calves using passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). Two calves were sensitised with soluble extract of H lineatum larvae and a third was injected with 43 hatching H bovis larvae.
