Older primary care patients' attitudes and willingness to screen for dementia.

Objective. To understand older primary care patients' perceptions of the risks and benefits of dementia screening and to measure the association between attitudes and screening behaviors. Methods. Eligible patients completed the Perceptions Regarding Investigational Screening for Memory in Primary Care (PRISM-PC) questionnaire and then were asked to undergo dementia screening by a telephone screening instrument. Results. Higher scores on the PRISM-PC questionnaire items that measure attitudes about benefits of screening were associated with decreased odds of refusing screening. Participants wh

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Parental Refusal of Consent in a Large, Multisite Pediatric Critical Care Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether race or ethnicity was independently associated with parental refusal of consent for their child's participation in a multisite pediatric critical care clinical trial. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a secondary analyses of data from Randomized Evaluation of Sedation Titration for Respiratory Failure (RESTORE), a 31-center cluster randomized trial of sedation management in critically ill children with acute respiratory failure supported on mechanical ventilation. Multivariable logistic regression modeling estimated associations between patient race and ethnicity and p

Legal duties to respect abortion choices.

This paper addresses legal protection of individual choices to obtain abortion services, to decline to perform abortions on grounds of religious objection, and to participate in these procedures. It considers legal duties to respect women as decision-makers in their own lives, including when they decide to continue pregnancy. The choice to decline participation in abortions is an aspect of religious freedom available to physicians, nurses, and, for instance, pharmacists, but not artificial legal persons such as hospital and clinic corporations. Refusal does not extend to ancillary functions su

Behavioral avoidance tasks for eliciting disgust and anxiety in contamination fear: An examination of a test for a combined disgust and fear reaction.

While research supports the role of disgust in contamination OCD, there is also an overlap with fear in motivating avoidance. The "heebie-jeebies" is an emotional response associated with fear and disgust that motivates avoidance of contact with skin-transmitted pathogens (e.g., parasites). This motivation aligns with characteristics of contamination OCD. From a screening of undergraduate students (N = 188), contamination fearful (n = 14), high trait-anxious (n = 14), and low trait-anxious (n = 18) groups were created. Participants engaged in disgust, fear, and "heebie-jeebies" behavioral avoi

Decision-Making And Selection Bias in Four Observational Studies on Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Natural history data are essential for trial design in Duchenne (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), but recruitment for observational studies can be challenging. OBJECTIVE: We reviewed reasons why patients or caregivers declined participation, and compared characteristics of participants and non-participants to assess possible selection bias in four observational studies, three on DMD and one on BMD. METHODS: Three pediatric DMD studies focused on cross-sectional cognitive function and brain MRI (DMDbrain, n = 35 and DMDperfusion, n = 12), and on longitudinal upper extremi

Clinical significance of test refusal among young children.

The present study describes the incidence of test refusal at neuropsychological assessment, investigates its correlates, and its stability. The participants were 124 children aged 3.5 years whose development has been followed from birth in the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia (JLD). The frequency of test refusal on the Finnish version of the NEPSY was analyzed with respect to the children's concurrent and earlier cognitive and language skills, assessed using tests and parental ratings. Refusal during test-taking was found to be relatively common at this age, and high frequency of refus

Determinants of participation in an epidemiological study of preterm delivery.

We describe the study design and patterns of participation for a cohort study of preterm delivery, focused on genital tract infections, nutrition, tobacco use, illicit drugs and psychosocial stress. Women are recruited at 24-29 weeks' gestation from prenatal clinics at a teaching hospital and a county health department. We recruited 57% of the first 1843 eligible women; 29% refused and 8% could not be contacted. White women were somewhat more likely to participate than African-American women (61% vs. 54% respectively). More notable differences were found comparing teaching hospital and health

Subtyping of Adolescents with School Refusal Behavior: Exploring Differences Across Profiles in Self-Concept.

Not all adolescents with school attendance problems attribute their behavior to the same causes. Knowing the subtypes of students who reject school and their relationship with new variables, such as self-concept, is an unresolved task. This study aimed to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differed from each other based on the scores of the eleven dimensions of self-concept (Physical appearance, Physical abilities, Parent relations, Same-sex relations, Opposite-sex relations, Honesty, Emotional stability, Self-esteem, Verbal, Math, and G

Factors affecting withdrawal and donation attrition in the brains for dementia research cohort.

OBJECTIVES: To measure two forms of attrition in a cohort of volunteer brain donors: Withdrawal during life and non-donation at death. To test whether cognitive impairment independently predicts attrition. METHOD: Attrition rates were calculated for all registered participants and for all brain donors who had completed a baseline and follow-up assessment of cognition, health, and lifestyle. Attrition reasons were described, and attrition rates were compared by gender, age group, and cognitive status. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the factors which independently predict

Childhood scurvy: an unusual cause of refusal to walk in a child.

Scurvy, or vitamin C deficiency, is rarely presented to a rheumatology clinic. It can mimic several rheumatologic disorders. Although uncommon, it may present as pseudovasculitis or chronic arthritis. Scurvy still exists today within certain populations, particularly in patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities, psychiatric illness or unusual dietary habits.Scurvy presentation to the rheumatologist varies from aches and mild pains to excruciating bone pain or arthritis. Musculoskeletal and mucocutaneous features of scurvy are often what prompts referrals to pediatric rheumatology clinics.

Reasons physicians accepted or declined smallpox vaccine, February through April, 2003.

From February to April 2003, we performed an e-mail-based survey to assess responses of physicians at Yale University to being offered smallpox vaccine. Of 58 respondents, 3 (5%) had been or intended to be vaccinated. Reasons cited for declining vaccination included: belief that benefits did not outweigh risks (55%), belief that the vaccination program was unnecessary (18%), desire to wait and see what side effects occurred in vaccinees (11%), and worries about compensation or liability (7%). Most (94%) considered risks to themselves, family, or patients in their decision. Only 3% thought a sm

Testing the Functional Profiles of School Refusal Behavior and Clarifying Their Relationship With School Anxiety.

Students with school attendance problems are a diverse and heterogeneous group whose patterns of symptomatology can change over time. This study aims to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on four situational factors and three response systems of school anxiety across gender. The participants were 1,685 Spanish students (49% female) aged 15-18 years (M = 16.28; SD =0.97). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) were administered. Latent profile analysis revea

Essential tremor prevalence is low in Arabic villages in Israel: door-to-door neurological examinations.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of essential tremor (ET) in Arabic villages of Wadi Ara. BACKGROUND: The prevalence ET which is higher than Parkinson's disease in North America and Europe, differs according to study population and methodology. Since hospital record based epidemiology carries referral bias and might provide low estimates of ET prevalence, we carried a population based survey. METHODS: This door-to-door survey comprised the Arabic villages of Wadi Ara in Northern Israel. Consecutive residents who agreed to participate in the study and were older than 64 years at prevalen

Determinants of a subject's decision to participate in clinical anesthesia research.

BACKGROUND: A top priority for research studies is to ensure that potential participants receive adequate information to make a truly informed decision. Understanding patient experiences with the recruitment process may identify areas for improvement in the consent process. We examined which factors were associated with the decision to consent in a clinical research study. METHODS: Patients scheduled for elective surgery were asked to complete a questionnaire about the consent process, immediately after being approached to participate in an anesthesia-related research study. Sociodemographic

Prevalence and determinants of parental refusal of human papillomavirus vaccination in Morocco: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) is an effective way to avert cervical cancer. However, acceptance in Morocco remains inadequate. The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of parental HPV vaccine refusal and the risk factors associated with it. METHODS: Between 3 March and 30 September 2025, a multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among Moroccan parents of girls aged 11-14 who attended health facilities. The study looked at sociodemographic factors, knowledge regarding HPV and cervical cancer, and vaccination attitudes. A multivariate logis
