Working with resistant drug abusers.

Despite the social turmoil created by drug abusers who are resistant to treatment, very little has been done to develop techniques for working with them. This article identifies some of the more promising approaches in the literature. Among these are individualized and objective feedback on the social and physiological effects of drug consumption. Expert advice to quit and the deliberate manipulation of environmental contingencies by workers can also be effective, as can partner interventions such as reciprocity marriage counseling and reinforcement training. Resistant drug abusers are of part

Enhanced avoidance behavior in social anxiety: evidence from a probabilistic learning task.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social phobia is characterized by avoidance of feared social situations. Although avoidance is a central feature of social anxiety, few studies have examined avoidance learning. METHODS: We used a probabilistic instrumental learning paradigm where participants had to learn by trial and error which response led to the disappearance of a neutral or angry face. 20 high socially anxious and 20 non-socially anxious individuals with an average level of social anxiety learned to avoid an angry or a neutral face by choosing one of two cues. Each of the cues led to the disap

Polyvagal Theory and developmental psychopathology: emotion dysregulation and conduct problems from preschool to adolescence.

In science, theories lend coherence to vast amounts of descriptive information. However, current diagnostic approaches in psychopathology are primarily atheoretical, emphasizing description over etiological mechanisms. We describe the importance of Polyvagal Theory toward understanding the etiology of emotion dysregulation, a hallmark of psychopathology. When combined with theories of social reinforcement and motivation, Polyvagal Theory specifies etiological mechanisms through which distinct patterns of psychopathology emerge. In this paper, we summarize three studies evaluating autonomic ner

Negatively-Reinforced Mands: An Examination of Resurgence to Existing Mands in Two Children With Autism and Language Delays.

In this study, we extended the literature on negatively-reinforced mands by teaching multiple novel, socially appropriate alternative mands to two young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). First, we replaced existing mands (e.g., pushing away) with two novel, socially appropriate, negatively-reinforced mands. Next, we examined responding under immediate- and delayed-reinforcement conditions to assess resurgence to existing mands and to determine whether the function of the communicative behavior influences the consistency with which different mands are emitted. Finally, we examined g

Commentary: Interventions based on learning principles can supplant seclusion and restraint.

Regulatory and administrative imperatives, when paired with staff training in humanistic, verbally mediated interventions can reduce the frequency of seclusion and restraint but can be associated with increases in the frequency and severity of staff injury, with concomitant tension and apprehension in the treatment setting. Even when educational programs for staff are made available for patient-centered, therapeutic, and persuasion-based modes of de-escalation, aggression, destructiveness and self-injury may continue to occur or even increase. Administrative contingencies can lead to less repo

Examination of Peer Interactions During Cooperative and Competitive Board Games Among Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on and off Methylphenidate.

Children with ADHD have significant difficulties with social skill application (e.g., waiting turn, interpreting social cues). Behavioral treatments to promote social skills, such as the Summer Treatment Program (STP), incorporate daily social skills training with systematic opportunities to apply skills as part of peer group interactions. Recreational periods are particularly well-suited for examining these behaviors, as social skills are essential during game play. The current study examined undesirable behaviors during board games and explored underlying factors (e.g., inhibitory control, s

Reinforcement principles for addiction medicine; from recreational drug use to psychiatric disorder.

The transition from recreational drug use to addiction can be conceptualized as a pathological timeline whereby the psychological mechanisms responsible for disordered drug use evolve from positive reinforcement to favor elements of negative reinforcement. Abused substances (ranging from alcohol to psychostimulants) are initially ingested at regular occasions according to their positive reinforcing properties. Importantly, repeated exposure to rewarding substances sets off a chain of secondary reinforcing events, whereby cues and contexts associated with drug use may themselves become reinforc

AIDS risk behavior in opioid dependent patients treated with community reinforcement approach and relationships with psychiatric disorders.

This study examined the Community Reinforcement Approach's (CRA) effect on AIDS risk behaviors and the relationship between comorbid psychiatric disorders and the risk for AIDS behavior in opioid dependent patients entering methadone maintenance treatment. Additionally, we looked at AIDS risk behaviors as they related to the Addition Severity Index (ASI), Beck Depression Inventory, Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and the Social Adjustment Scale-Self Report (SAS-SR). Subjects (N = 227) were drawn from a large clinical trial that examined the effectiveness of a Community Reinforcement A

The stability of function of automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy over time.

Although prior research has suggested the function of socially reinforced problem behavior can change across time, the stability of the function of automatically reinforced behavior is largely unknown. Further, some authors have suggested automatically reinforced behavior is likely to enter into socially mediated contingencies. The present study compared 2 functional analyses conducted on the same target behavior at least 1 year apart. Participants were 6 individuals diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability displaying automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy. Results indicat

Fear of losing money? Aversive conditioning with secondary reinforcers.

Money is a secondary reinforcer that acquires its value through social communication and interaction. In everyday human behavior and laboratory studies, money has been shown to influence appetitive or reward learning. It is unclear, however, if money has a similar impact on aversive learning. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of money in aversive learning, comparing it with primary reinforcers that are traditionally used in fear conditioning paradigms. A series of experiments were conducted in which participants initially played a gambling game that led to a monetary gain.

Functional analysis of self-injurious behavior in an adult with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

A three-phase functional analysis was conducted to discover controlling variables of self-injury in a 28-year-old individual with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Experimental verification followed information-gathering and interpretive phases. Self-injurious responses were blocked to prevent harm to the participant; therefore, responses measured were precursors to self-injury. A multielement experimental design included four assessment conditions: social attention contingent on precursory behavior, attention contingent on behavior incompatible with precursory behavior, continuous attention and minimal a

Novelty-seeking and directed exploration scale with dissociable social network outcomes and brain systems in older adults.

UNLABELLED: Social isolation and loneliness are major determinants of well-being in older adults. Shrinking social networks and age-related shifts in social behavior and decision-making may increase vulnerability to loneliness. These changes in social decision-making strategies can be conceptualized within an exploration-exploitation tradeoff framework, in which social options with known outcomes are prioritized over uncertain ones. Yet, no study has characterized how complementary decision-making strategies, undirected novelty seeking and goal-directed exploration, relate to social network co

Simplified habit reversal treatment for chronic hair pulling in three adolescents: a clinical replication with direct observation.

Three developmentally normal adolescents with chronic hair pulling were treated with a simplified habit reversal procedure consisting of awareness training, competing response training, and social support. Treatment resulted in an immediate reduction to near-zero levels of hair pulling, with one to three booster sessions required to maintain these levels. The results were maintained from 18 to 27 weeks posttreatment, although 1 participant reported difficulty at follow-up. The effectiveness of simplified habit reversal and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Social Drinking and Addiction: A Social-Cognitive Model for Understanding Alcohol Use Disorder Risk.

Scientists have long focused on intrapersonal factors and solitary drinking settings in researching addiction etiology. Yet evidence has accumulated to indicate a key role for social contexts in alcohol use disorder development. Here we review four core characteristics of social drinking contexts relevant for the understanding of disordered drinking, including prevalence, developmental timing, negative consequences, and reward value. We present a social-cognitive model aimed at elucidating reinforcement from alcohol in social context, proposing a role for alcohol in inhibiting higher-order cog

Characterization of nucleus accumbens dopamine dynamics during positive and negative operant reinforcement in rats.

We previously reported, using in-vivo fiber photometry, that operant responding reinforced by access to a peer (social self-administration) is associated with phasic dopamine increases in nucleus accumbens (NAc) core following lever insertion (reward-availability cue) and gradual increases preceding lever-pressing. Here, we sought to replicate these findings and determine whether dopamine signals (1) generalize to responding for high-carbohydrate palatable food, (2) show opposite patterns during negative reinforcement (shock avoidance/escape), and (3) depend on whether reinforcers are experien

Socially Learned Attitude Change is not reduced in Medicated Patients with Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is often associated with distinctive or odd social behaviours. Previous work suggests this could be due to a general reduction in conformity; however, this work only assessed the tendency to publicly agree with others, which may involve a number of different mechanisms. In this study, we specifically investigated whether patients display a reduced tendency to adopt other people's opinions (socially learned attitude change). We administered a computerized conformity task, assumed to rely on reinforcement learning circuits, to 32 patients with schizophrenia or schizo-affective diso

Diminished alternative reinforcement as a mechanism linking conduct problems and substance use in adolescence: a longitudinal examination.

AIMS: To determine whether diminished alternative reinforcement (i.e. engagement and enjoyment from substance-free activities) mediated the longitudinal association of conduct problems with substance use in early-mid-adolescence. DESIGN: Structural equation modeling tested whether the association between wave 1 (baseline) conduct problems and wave 3 (24-month follow-up) substance use outcomes was mediated by diminished alternative reinforcement at wave 2 (12-month follow-up). Additional analyses tested whether sex and socio-economic status moderated this association. SETTING: Ten high school

Behavioural treatment to reduce sleep problems in children with autism or fragile X syndrome.

There are few well-controlled, published evaluations of sleep interventions for children with developmental disabilities. This paper evaluates a parent training programme using behavioural principles to reduce sleep problems in children with autism or fragile X syndrome (FXS). Training included bedtime routines, reinforcement, effective instructions, partner support, and extinction (removing reinforcement to reduce a behaviour). Programme efficacy was demonstrated by using a multiple baseline across-participant design. Social validity was also assessed. Five children with autism and one with A

Social anxiety among young adult drinkers: the role of perceived norms and drinking motives.

The aim of the study was to examine the separate and combined influence of perceived norms, negative reinforcement drinking motives, and social anxiety on alcohol outcomes. Participants (N = 250) completed measures of injunctive norms, social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. Data collection occurred in 2010. When examined separately, motives emerged as a stronger predictor of alcohol outcomes over norms. When tested jointly, findings suggest that for drinkers higher in social anxiety, normative perceptions are relevant and to such a degree that norms actual
