Negatively-Reinforced Mands: An Examination of Resurgence to Existing Mands in Two Children With Autism and Language Delays.

In this study, we extended the literature on negatively-reinforced mands by teaching multiple novel, socially appropriate alternative mands to two young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). First, we replaced existing mands (e.g., pushing away) with two novel, socially appropriate, negatively-reinforced mands. Next, we examined responding under immediate- and delayed-reinforcement conditions to assess resurgence to existing mands and to determine whether the function of the communicative behavior influences the consistency with which different mands are emitted. Finally, we examined g

Teaching multiply controlled intraverbals to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

Reciprocal conversations, instructional activities, and other social interactions are replete with multiply controlled intraverbals, examples of which have been conceptualized in terms of conditional discriminations. Although the acquisition of conditional discriminations has been examined extensively in the behavior-analytic literature, little research has evaluated procedures to establish multiply controlled intraverbals. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of procedures based on conditional discrimination training on the acquisition of multiply controlled int

Two-year follow-up of the Lidcombe Program in ten Swedish-speaking children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this semicontrolled prospective study was to report on the outcomes of 10 Swedish-speaking children treated with the Lidcombe Program and how the parents viewed the treatment. METHOD: Ten children at an age from 2:9 to 5:8 (years:months) referred to two clinics for communication disorders were consecutively included in the study. The children had been stuttering for 0:9 to 3:3 with a mean stuttering frequency of 10.1% syllables stuttered (%SS; 0.8-33.9) before treatment. Parents and teachers filled out questionnaires concerning the children's speech and the parents als

Using differential reinforcement to treat functional hypophonia in a paediatric rehabilitation patient.

Behaviour analysis studies have demonstrated the use of operant procedures for treating symptoms of psychiatric disorders. These symptoms are usually caused or maintained by a variety of variables including specific organic mechanisms, yet most can be modified by environmental social contingencies. In this case study, data is presented on a 16 year-old male admitted to a rehabilitation hospital following the onset of polymyositis. This patient also presented with functional hypophonia and met the DSM-IV diagnostic criterion for a conversion disorder. In conjunction with the medical team and a

Older adult's acceptability ratings of treatments for verbal agitation in persons with dementia.

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Various interventions are available to manage verbal agitation (VA), but our understanding regarding their acceptability is limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the acceptability of 3 interventions from the point of view of elderly individuals: direct interaction (DI), differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviors (DRI), and risperidone (RIS). METHODS: Participants (N = 69) evaluated the acceptability of each treatment according to the description of a fictional person who demonstrated aggressive or nonaggressive VA. RESULTS: There is an interaction b

Adolescents Who Are Overweight or Obese Exhibit Weaker Spatial and Verbal Working Memory Compared with Healthy-Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies link obesity to neurophysiological changes, however cognitive outcomes in adolescents who are overweight or obese, especially with their eating behavior, require further documentation. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between body mass index (BMI), eating behavior, and cognitive performance in Mexican adolescents. METHOD: Urban Mexican adolescents completed CANTAB tasks assessing spatial memory (PAL: Paired Associates Learning; SSP: Spatial Span), verbal memory (VRM: Verbal Recognition Memory), and emotional recognition (ERT: Emotion Recognition Task), as we

Characterizing language outcomes following childhood basal ganglia stroke.

The basal ganglia are important for movement and executive function, but its contribution to language is less understood. This study explored language outcomes associated with childhood basal ganglia stroke. A detailed language coding scheme, which examined expressive and receptive language, verbal fluency, narrative discourse, pragmatic/applied language, and academics, was developed from qualitative and quantitative data acquired from neuropsychological testing and reports. Overall intellectual functioning and verbal comprehension was in the average range. Twelve participants had psychologica

Anticipation of reward in a nonaversive differential conditioning paradigm and the brain reward system: an event-related fMRI study.

Findings from animal as well as human neuroimaging studies suggest that reward delivery is associated with the activation of subcortical limbic and prefrontal brain regions, including the thalamus, the striatum, the anterior cingulate and the prefrontal cortex. The aim of the present study was to explore if these reward-sensitive regions are also activated during the anticipation of reinforcers that vary with regard to their motivational value. A differential conditioning paradigm was performed, with the presentation of a rewarded reaction time task serving as the unconditioned stimulus (US).

Evaluating a GPS-based transportation device to support independent bus travel by people with intellectual disability.

We examined the utility of a PDA-based software system with integrated GPS technology for providing location-aware visual and auditory prompts to enable people with intellectual disability to successfully navigate a downtown bus route. Participants using the system were significantly more successful at completing a bus route than were people in a control group, who used a map and verbal directions. Further, when using the GPS-based system, 73% of participants successfully rang the bell and exited the bus at the right stop compared with only 8% of the control group. This finding was observed fo

Using a stimulus correlated with reprimands to suppress automatically maintained eye poking.

A functional analysis indicated that chronic eye poking exhibited by a woman with profound mental retardation persisted in the absence of social contingencies. We initiated a procedure in which a therapist delivered a punisher (mild reprimand) contingent on eye poking in the presence, but not the absence, of a neutral stimulus (wristbands). Subsequently, eye poking was suppressed when the participant wore the wristbands in novel environments without the reprimand contingency.

Further evaluation of methods to identify matched stimulation.

The effects of preferred stimulation on the vocal stereotypy of 2 individuals were evaluated in two experiments. The results of Experiment 1 showed that (a) the vocal stereotypy of both participants persisted in the absence of social consequences, (b) 1 participant manipulated toys that did and did not produce auditory stimulation, but only sound-producing toys decreased his vocal stereotypy, and (c) only noncontingent music decreased vocal stereotypy for the other participant, but sterotypy paradoxically increased when toys were presented with music. Using a three-component multiple schedule,

Assessment and treatment of vocal tics associated with Tourette's syndrome.

A functional analysis suggested that a young man's vocal tics were maintained by automatic reinforcement. A preference assessment was conducted to identify stimuli that effectively competed with the occurrence of vocal tics. When used as components of a reinforcement-based intervention, however, these stimuli were ineffective at reducing the occurrence of vocal tics. Observations conducted in a naturalistic context led to the hypothesis that variations in tics were associated with body positioning. Thus, an additional analysis was conducted to determine if vocal tics occurred less when the par

The characteristics of young and adult dyslexics readers on reading and reading related cognitive tasks as compared to normal readers.

Most of the research into dyslexia has been carried out among children and has raised the question whether the characteristics of young dyslexics are similar to those of adult dyslexics. The aim of this research was, therefore, to confirm whether the cognitive deficits, which appear among young dyslexics on reading and reading related tasks, are similar among adult dyslexics. Four groups of subjects were tested in this study: two groups of fourth graders, dyslexic and normal readers, and two groups of students, compensated dyslexics and normal readers. A comparison of the differences in resear

The complex nature of human operant gambling behaviour involving slot games: Structural characteristics, verbal rules and motivation.

Gambling behaviour is likely to be strongly influenced by operant learning principles. Most forms of gambling, and most notably slot machine play, follow a random ratio (RR) schedule of reinforcement that should lead to rapid and extinction-resistant behaviour. In this paper we highlight the caveats that need to be applied when generalising animal models of learning to human behaviour. Studies need to be cognisant of the role of verbal rules and cognitive appraisals of contingency; the ability for participants to self-modify important elements of reward schedules; potential differences between

Language intervention and disruptive behavior in preschool children with autism.

Disruptive behaviors are often exhibited by children with severe disabilities during difficult teaching tasks. Because learning verbal communication can be a difficult task for nonverbal children with autism, disruptive behaviors are common during such interventions. The purpose of this experiment was to assess whether the incorporation of parameters of natural language interactions and motivational techniques might reduce disruptive behavior during language teaching tasks. Within a repeated reversals design with order of conditions and number of sessions varied within and across children, tre

The Effect of Periodic Assessments and Verbal Feedback on Physical Function and Adherence in Healthy Adults Aged ≥65: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background and Objectives: Low participation rates in exercise programs among older adults highlight the need for theory-driven, biopsychosocial interventions that enhance adherence, self-efficacy, and functional outcomes. Grounded in principles of motor learning and behavioral reinforcement within physiotherapy practice, this study aimed to examine the effect of periodic assessments combined with verbal feedback on functional and psychological outcomes in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A pilot RCT was conducted involving 54 individuals aged ≥65 years (53 women and 1 man), recruited

Use of self-operated auditory prompts by workers with moderate mental retardation to transition independently through vocational tasks.

The use of single- and multiple-word self-operated auditory prompting systems by five school-age workers with moderate mental retardation to independently transition between an ordered chain of tasks was examined in two vocational settings. The effectiveness of single- and multiple-word self-operated auditory prompts was assessed using an alternating treatment design within a multiple probe across settings. Analysis of the data revealed a significant effect on the number of independent task changes made by workers when using the single- or multiple-word auditory prompting system. When promptin

Understanding behavior under nonverbal transitive-inference procedures: Stimulus-control-topography analyses.

Following training with verbal stimulus relations involving A is greater than B and B is greater than C, verbally-competent individuals reliably select A>C when asked "which is greater, A or C?" (i.e., verbal transitive inference). This result is easy to interpret. Nonhuman animals and humans with and without intellectual disabilities have been exposed to nonverbal transitive-inference procedures involving trained arbitrary stimulus relations. Following the training of A+B-, B+C-, C+D-, and D+E-, B reliably is selected over D (i.e., nonverbal transitive inference). Such findings are more chall

Effects of Extended Cannabis Abstinence on Cognitive Outcomes in Cannabis Dependent Patients with Schizophrenia vs Non-Psychiatric Controls.

Cross-sectional studies of the effects of cannabis on cognition in schizophrenia have produced mixed results. Heavy and persistent cannabis use in schizophrenia is a common clinical problem, and effects of controlled abstinence from cannabis in these patients have not been carefully evaluated. The present study sought to determine the effects of cannabis abstinence on cognition in patients with schizophrenia and co-occurring cannabis dependence. We utilized a 28-day cannabis abstinence paradigm to investigate the state-dependent effects of cannabis on select cognitive outcomes in cannabis-depe
