Prostaglandin D2 and reproduction.

This review highlights recent studies investigating the role of prostaglandin (PG)D2 in reproduction. PGD2 induces sleep, allergic responses, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and relaxation of vascular and non-vascular smooth muscle, and has some roles in reproduction. Two types of PGD2 synthase are known. Lipocalin-type PGD synthase is present in cerebrospinal fluid, seminal plasma and may play an important role in male reproduction. Another PGD synthase, hematopoietic PGD synthase is present in the spleen, fallopian tube, endometrial gland cells, extravillous trophoblasts and villous trop…

Reproduction in female reindeer.

Reindeer are either wild or kept under very extensive farming systems. They are seasonal breeders, with mating coinciding with the decreasing photoperiod in the autumn, and with calving in the spring. Little is known regarding the factors that influence reproduction in reindeer or of their reproductive physiology. Studies carried out to date have mainly focused on issues related to the population dynamics of wild populations and semi-domestic herds, and to a limited extent on the reproductive physiology of the female. Nor is much known about reproductive disorders and their medical treatment, …

Melatonin and human reproduction.

In photoperiodic nonhuman mammals the secretion of melatonin from the pineal gland plays a major role in regulating reproductive physiology; in humans these relationships are less clear. The melatonin rhythm changes throughout life with the first substantial change in nocturnal melatonin secretion being reportedly associated with puberty. The transition from Tanner stage 1 to Tanner stage 5 of sexual maturation is associated with a significant reduction in nocturnal melatonin levels, but a cause-effect relationship has not been established. Menstrual cyclicity has been reported to be associate

Assisted reproduction: who qualifies?

Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have been the focus of considerable debate in which a range of social issues has been addressed, yet the question of who is eligible for ART, who can get access, who is excluded and by what means, has received little attention in comparison with other issues. In Australia social policies presently exist in some (but not all) states which address this question, however several recently publicised cases have highlighted the need for an examination of inclusion/exclusion practices from a social justice perspective. This paper seeks to explore the issue of

[Electromagnetic poles and reproduction].

The authors review epidemiological data concerning the relationship between reproduction disorders and the exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by power lines, industrial power-charged devices, diagnostic and therapeutical appliances, video display terminals (VDTs) and electric household devices. The studies involved the analysis of the EMF effect on female and male reproduction, including the risk of spontaneous abortion, still birth and premature birth, low birth weight and congenital malformations as well as on the progeny gender proportion, among persons employed under the cond…

Endocrine modulation of reproduction.

The ability of foreign compounds to affect the functioning of various endocrine systems is currently thought responsible for a wide variety of effects. The presentations in this Symposium reviewed the evidence for and against the involvement of endocrine systems in several different aspects of reproduction. The mechanism behind the ability of a triazine herbicide to cause enhanced appearance of mammary tumors in one strain of female rats is reviewed by Stevens. The data suggest that enhanced aging, not direct mammary modulation, is responsible. Dietary phytoestrogens, the mediators of their ac…

Vulvo-vaginitis and reproduction.

The main micro-organisms able to interfere with the reproductive function have been considered. In particular, the problems concerning the vaginal environment and its interactions with spermatozoa, immunological aspects and contraception. Lastly, reference has been made to methods of prevention and study in the field of diagnostics and of clinical management.

Cocaine abuse and reproduction.

Cocaine abuse today is widespread and is on the increase in North America. It is estimated that one in every four Americans has used cocaine for its euphorigenic properties. With increasing participation of younger age subjects in the cocaine abuse, the effects of cocaine on the reproductive system have attracted considerable attention. The impact of cocaine abuse on the health and society has been repeatedly documented in the past, but its effects on human reproduction have only recently been appreciated. The initial reports, on the harmful effects of cocaine on pregnancy and neonatal outcome…

Lead, reproduction and development.

Lead remains a significant occupational health and public health problem. Excessive lead exposure, not only to men exposed at work, but also from lead based paint in older housing and from soil, still persists in the community. From the perspective of human reproduction, lead is known to cause a number of adverse outcomes in both men and women. Reported effects in men include reduced libido, effects on spermatogenesis (reduced motility and numbers, increased normal morphology), chromosomal damage, infertility, abnormal prostatic function and changes in serum testosterone. Most of these effects…

Infertility and assisted reproduction.

The inability to have children is a considerable cause of human distress. There is little evidence to suggest that the vast majority of infertile couples differ in their premorbid psychological make-up from their fertile contemporaries. There is understandable grief in response to their loss of the ability to have children and in vulnerable people this may be profound. There is little known of the long-term outcome of such couples, but it seems likely that for some it will be a devastating experience that will affect their life-time mental health. There are a large proportion of couples with u

[Prolactin in male reproduction].

Prolactin (PRL), a peptide hormon from the hypophysis, becomes more interesting, since it can be determined by radioimmunassays. The release of prolactin is controlled by two not yet identified factors, the prolactin-releasing-factor and the prolactin-inhibiting-factor. The latter predominantes. Many pharmacological substances can alter the release. The normal serum levels in the man are 6-13 ng/ml. Prolactin affects many organs, f.e. kidney, mamma, ovary, testis, hepar and skin. For clinical tests the raise in the serum levels after TSH or chlorpromacin and the drop after application of 2-bro

The role of adiponectin in reproduction: from polycystic ovary syndrome to assisted reproduction.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the effects of the adipokine adiponectin on the reproductive endocrine system, from the hypothalamic-pituitary axis … ndometrium, and testes. Adiponectin influences gonadotropin release, normal pregnancy, and assisted reproduction outcomes. CONCLUSION(S): Adiponectin, a beneficial adipokine, represents a major link between obesity and reproduction. Higher levels of adiponectin are associated with improved menstrual function and better outcomes in assisted reproductive cycles …

The impact of air pollution and endocrine disruptors on reproduction and assisted reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rapid increase in world population accompanied by global industrialization has led to an increase in deployment of natural resources, resulting in growing levels of pollution. Here, we review recent literature on the impact of environmental pollution on human reproductive health and assisted reproduction outcomes, focusing on two of the most common: air pollution and endocrine disruptors. RECENT FINDINGS: Air pollution has been associated with diminished ovarian reserve, uterine leiomyoma, decreased sperm concentration and motility. Air pollution also correlates with decrea…

Putting Nose into Reproduction: Influence of Nasal and Reproductive Odourant Signaling on Male Reproduction.

Odourant receptors (ORs) are not restricted only to the nose, but also occur in many other organs and tissues, including the reproductive system. In fact, ORs are the most heavily expressed in testis than in any other extra-nasal tissue. Accumulating evidence suggests that olfactory and reproductive systems are both structurally and functionally linked and that these interconnections can influence various aspects of reproduction. In this article, we first review our current understanding of these interconnections and then collate accumulated evidence on the presence of ORs in the male reproduc…
