Two common porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), one found stranded on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, and the other in the Moray Firth, Scotland, in late 1990, were examined post mortem. Lesions of diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia were present in both animals; they were characterised by the infiltration of alveoli with leucocytes, macrophages and multinucleate syncytia, the necrosis of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, focal proliferation of type II pneumocytes and occasional acidophilic cytoplasmic inclusions in alveolar macrophages and syncytia. Lymphoid depletion was apparent in the spleen, t

Three children were admitted within an 8-week period with parainfluenza virus type 3 infection accompanied by encephalitis. All 3 patients had electroencephalograms characterized by slowing, disorganization of background activity, and multifocal sharp-wave activity with temporal predominance. Apnea and periodic breathing were observed in 1 patient, opsoclonus-myoclonus in another, and disease mimicking herpes encephalitis in the third. All 3 patients recovered without neurologic residua.

AIM: To estimate the proportional contribution of influenza viruses (IV), parainfluenza viruses (PIV), adenoviruses (AV), and coronaviruses (CV) to the burden of severe acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI).
METHODS: The review of the literature followed PRISMA guidelines. We included studies of hospitalized children aged 0-4 years with confirmed ALRI published between 1995 and 2011. A total of 51 studies were included in the final review, comprising 56091 hospitalized ALRI episodes.
RESULTS: IV was detected in 3.0% (2.2%-4.0%) of all hospitalized ALRI cases, PIV in 2.7% (1.9%-3.7%), and

We study 18 children with acute respiratory infection diagnosed early by direct immunofluorescence (DIF) using monoclonal antibodies to synticial respiratory virus (SRV). Antibodies to adenovirus, influenza virus A and B, parainfluenza virus 1, 2 and 3, mycoplasma, Q fever, herpes and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are also studied. We consider that in most cases the diagnosis of infections caused by SRV cannot be established by complement fixation, and should be accompanied by some antigen detection technique. Direct immunofluorescence facilitates the early detection of SRV in most cases before the ap

Using an unidirectional leucocyte migration-inhibition (LMI) assay, we investigated the migration-inhibitory activity (LIF) in the sera of 25 infants who developed bronchiolitis following respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. Blood samples for serum-LIF activity detection were obtained from patients the day after admission and two weeks later. The LMI assay revealed serum-LIF activity in 17 (68%) blood samples taken during the acute phase of the disease. In contrast, no inhibition was found in the convalescent blood samples with the exception of 5 (20%). This difference was statisticall

A 35-year-old Japanese woman was admitted with coma following flu-like symptoms. She was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis and fulminant type 1 diabetes (FT1D) and received intravenous infusion of insulin and saline. The next day, the ketoacidosis disappeared, and she recovered consciousness. However, extensive ST-segment elevations in the electrocardiogram appeared with a positive troponin test, and the patient developed pulmonary edema on day 3. An echocardiogram showed globally reduced wall motion of the left ventricle and mild pericardial effusion. Despite medical therapy with intraveno

A clinical, pathological and microbiological study was made of acute spontaneous bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection in calves. Characteristic features were atelectatic areas, which had an exudative and, or, necrotising bronchiolitis with syncytial giant cells in the epithelial lining and in the lumina of these bronchioles. Restricted to these areas both bronchiolar and alveolar immunofluorescence for bovine respiratory syncytial virus were seen. Complications were severe interstitial oedema, interstitial emphysema and a catarrhal or fibrinous pneumonia due to secondary bacterial inva

Influenza viruses A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) and parainfluenza viruses (Sendai mumps) were cultivated in chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) fragments maintained in media with different formulae, with or without daily medium changes, in roller or stationary tubes. Inoculation was performed either directly on CAM fragments in Petri dishes or by dilution of the virus-containing material in the medium. Infectant titers obtained in CAM fragments were similar to those recorded in embryonated eggs at 48 hours post inoculation (p.i.) in the case of influenza virus A(H1N1) and at 72 hours p.i. in that of Sendai a

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of community-acquired respiratory viruses at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin between 1996 and 1998 was examined with molecular [multiplex (M) PCR] and standard virologic methods.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 3325 patients with lower respiratory infection (LRI) [bronchiolitis (42%), pneumonia (38%) and croup (12%)] were identified. It is estimated that 545,000 LRI hospitalizations occur each year in the United States in children younger than 18 years old (viral, 428,000; pneumonia, 221,000; bronchiolitis, 222,000; croup, 65,000), including a continued incre

Recent studies revealed common genetic risks for both viral bronchiolitis and asthma. Genome-wide association studies revealed that rs7216389 in the ORMDL3 gene is associated with childhood asthma. We conducted a case-control study examining the associations between ORMDL3 polymorphisms (rs7216389, rs12603332, and rs11650680) and bronchiolitis susceptibility/viral findings among 247 infant bronchiolitis cases and 190 healthy controls. We genotyped single nucleotide polymorphisms by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and detected respiratory viruses wit

Impaction of a foreign body in the oesophagus is common in children. If the event is not witnessed by an adult or the object is radiolucent the diagnosis is difficult as respiratory symptoms may predominate. We report a three-week-old child with respiratory symptoms who had both a respiratory syncytial virus infection and a radio-lucent oesophageal foreign body. This case is the youngest yet reported and serves as a remainder of the difficulties in the diagnosis of this important condition.
