The purpose of this paper, was to discuss central retinal artery occlusion and its role in the patient's overall health. Several different causes of occlusion such as cardiovascular diseases, carotid artery disease, aortic arch disease and giant cell arteritis are discussed along with their symptomatology and clinical manifestations. Because of the importance of a proper diagnosis, the more common ophthalmoscopic pictures that are confused with the central retinal artery occlusions are also included. A case report of a central retinal artery occlusion secondary to a carotid artery stenosis is …

A 19-year-old man had bilateral congenital preretinal arterial loops emerging from the optic disk into the vitreous cavity. The loop in the right eye was associated with an inferior papillary arterial occlusion. Extensive examination to determine a systemic cause of the occlusion was negative; twisting or kinking of the loop may have had a role. The major arterial blood supply in each eye was cilioretinal in origin and in the left eye, the inferior preretinal arterial loop supplied blood to both the retina and the choroid. In three previous cases and our case of preretinal arterial loops assoc

BACKGROUND: In subtotal central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), distinct retinal edema with acute onset irreversible visual loss is common. -
METHODS: Clinical observation, fluorescein angiogram. -
PATIENT: A 69-year-old patient presented with acute visual loss of his right eye. Risk factors for CRAO were arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. A further factor was a 60% stenosis of the right and a 90% stenosis of the left internal carotid arteries. -
RESULT: Visual acuity at initial examination was 20/32 despite pronounced central retinal edema with characteristic cherry red spot of …

Retinal artery occlusions, encompassing central retinal artery occlusion and branch retinal artery occlusion, are acute vascular events that can result in significant and often irreversible vision loss. These ocular emergencies are closely associated with systemic vascular risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, advanced age, and cardiovascular comorbidities. Atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, has emerged as a notable contributor to the risk of retinal artery occlusions. The prevalence of AFib is rising, particularly among older adults, p…

INTRODUCTION: Almost 50% of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) develop ocular features, leading to visual loss in 8%. However, central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) has exceptionally been reported.
EXEGESIS: We report 2 patients with CRAO and WG according to ACR classification criteria. A literature search indicates that CRAO with WG has only been reported in 15 patients. We analyse the 17 cases to discuss systemic manifestations, ocular prognosis and treatment.
CONCLUSION: CRAO is a rare manifestation of WG. Nevertheless, CRAO seems to be associated with vasculitic type of WG. So…

BACKGROUND: Retinal artery occlusions typically result in sudden, unilateral painless loss of vision and may have varying presentations. They are associated with systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and valvular heart disease. Additional risk factors include diabetes mellitus, cigarette smoking, giant-cell arteritis, and hyperlipidemia. They most often occur in persons 60 to 80 years of age.
METHODS: Four patients have come to our clinics with varying degrees of visual loss as a result of retinal artery occlusions. The types of arteriolar occlusions presented include: prec…

A 60-year-old woman experienced sudden onset of vision loss in her right eye. Neuroimaging studies initially were interpreted as tumorous compression of the right optic nerve. On referral to our institution, examination findings were that of a right central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). Review of the previous imaging studies was consistent with an aneurysm of the intraorbital ophthalmic artery at the origin of the central retinal artery, which was believed to be the cause of the CRAO.

Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is one of the most devastating ophthalmic emergencies, causing acute painless visual loss in the affected eye. We describe the first case of acute non-arteritic CRAO associated with peripheral ophthalmic artery aneurysm and its clinical course after intra-arterial thrombolysis therapy. This case suggests that ophthalmic artery aneurysm can be the cause of CRAO and should be included in the differential diagnosis of CRAO.

PURPOSE: To evaluate efficacy and reliability of local intra-arterial fibrinolysis (LIF) in Retinal Central Artery Occlusion (RCAO).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have studied 12 patients with RCAO. Seven patients (group I) were treated with conventional therapy and 5 patients (group II) underwent treatment with urokinase via transcutaneous femoral catheter into the ophthalmic artery. Thereafter patients received heparin sulfate for 3 days.
RESULTS: Mean follow up was 14 months and mean time from onset of symptoms to the beginning of therapy was 11 hours. One patient in group I showed improvement

We retrospectively studied 46 patients with symptomatic retinal artery occlusion and assessed the pattern and extent of carotid artery disease ipsilateral to the retinal artery occlusion. Ipsilateral internal carotid artery atherosclerotic lesions were virtually limited to the cervical arterial segment; 50% of such lesions were plaques or stenoses of less than or equal to 60%, whereas 15% of the angiograms were normal. No clinical features were significantly associated with a flow-limiting carotid stenosis of greater than 60%. Contrary to previous reports, the type of retinal artery occlusion,…
