By 2050, the US aging population will nearly double. It will be increasingly important for health care providers to diagnose and manage rhinitis. Nasal symptoms of rhinorrhea, congestion, sneezing, nasal/ocular pruritus, and postnasal drainage affect up to 32% of older adults, and can impact quality of life. Several underlying factors associated with aging may contribute to the pathogenesis of rhinitis in older adults. Although treatment options for rhinitis exist, special considerations need to be made because comorbidities, limited income, memory loss, and side effects of medications are com…

Rhinitis is a familiar disorder affecting up to 20% of the general population. Chronic rhinitis can be broadly classified into allergic, infectious, or nonallergic or noninfectious, which are distinguished mainly by a careful history and allergy testing. The pathophysiology of nonallergic rhinitis likely involves a combination of inflammatory and neurogenic mechanisms that are poorly understood. Treatment involves avoiding the offending agent, when possible, and using appropriate medications to control the patient's predominant symptoms.

Mucus in the airways is a complex mixture of water, lipids, glycoproteins, sugars, and electrolytes that serves as a lubricant for the epithelium. The efficient flow of respiratory mucus is a first level of immune defense that requires an appropriate viscosity and elasticity for optimal barrier and ciliary functions. Thickening and drying of airway mucus by respiratory tract infections, allergies, and drugs can impair evacuation. Tenacious, bothersome mucus is an annoying and frequent symptom of rhinitis that is difficult to manage. Common remedies include adequate hydration through fluid inta…

Chronic rhinitis encompassing both allergic and nonallergic rhinitis affects a significant portion of the population worldwide, having a great impact on patient quality of life, and associated comorbid conditions, with an important societal economic burden. Allergists are often the first to evaluate and treat allergic and nonallergic rhinitis, addressing the individual triggers of the disease as well as the patient-specific responses to these triggers. This review focuses on the advances that have been made in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of nonallergic and allergic rhinitis over t…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of Rhinitis Spray (RS) in treating chronic rhinitis.
METHODS: Eighty patients with chronic rhinitis were divided into three groups, and treated with RS, ephedrine and normal saline respectively.
RESULTS: The short-term effective rate in the three groups was 89.3%, 66.7% and 8.0% respectively. RS was effective in alleviating symptoms, increasing IgG level in nasal discharge, improving ventilation of nasal cavity and transfer function of cilia of nasal mucosa obviously.
CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effect of RS in treating chronic rhinitis is good.

The clinical distinction of chronic respiratory rhinitis appears to confirm the evo-devo theory of the three noses. The authors report two cases of advanced allergic rhinitis, in which chronic inflammation had induced a violaceous colour of the mucosa of the respiratory nose and a whitish polypoid appearance of the free edge of the middle turbinate. Nose and paranasal sinus CT scan revealed, beyond the virtual nasal cavities observed on nasal endoscopy and CT imaging, normal radiolucency or only minor opacities of the ethmoid (i.e. olfactory nose) and paranasal sinuses that could not explain t…

This review focuses on local allergic rhinitis, a new phenotype of allergic rhinitis, commonly misdiagnosed as nonallergic rhinitis. It has gained attention over last decade and can affect patients from all countries, ethnic groups and ages, impairing their quality of life, and is frequently associated with conjunctivitis and asthma. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, the demonstration of a positive response to nasal allergen provocation test and/or the detection of nasal sIgE. A positive basophil activation test may support the diagnosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that allergen im…

Chronic nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) is a syndrome rather than a specific disease. A lack of understanding of the pathogenesis of this condition has led to imprecise terminology with several alternate names for the condition, including vasomotor rhinitis, nonallergic rhinopathy, and idiopathic rhinitis. The therapy for NAR is best based on the underlying pathology, which typically exists in a form whereby an abnormality of the autonomic nervous system is dominant or a form in which inflammation seems to be the cause of symptoms. In general the most effective therapy is the combination of an intr…

Allergic rhinitis is a common pediatric problem with significant comorbidities and potential complications. This article is an overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and current therapeutic strategies. Allergic rhinitis management in a specific child is age dependent and influenced by the severity and frequency of the symptoms and the presence of any concurrent conditions. Current strategies permit symptomatic control and improved quality of life for most patients.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is characterized by seasonal rhinorrhea, nasal congestion/stuffiness, nasal and ocular pruritus, and paroxysmal sneezing. Allergen avoidance is the first step in the management. Symptomatic relief and improved quality of life can be achieved in the majority of patients by the appropriate use of pharmacotherapy. Mild to moderate cases can be managed with either an oral/intranasal second generation antihistamine or an intranasal corticosteroid alone. More severe cases may require treatment with an intranasal corticosteroid in combination with various agents. Patients w…

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is estimated to affect 20-25% of the United States population and thus accounts for a significant portion of our annual total health care expenditure, especially when one includes all of the concomitant disorders associated with rhinitis such as asthma and sinusitis. Given the prevalence of chronic rhinitis, the significant comorbidities associated with this condition, its overall health burden, and dissatisfaction by allergy sufferers with treatment outcomes, it is essential that the allergist and otolaryngologist develop a consensus approach for the evaluat…

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis is characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the nose and can be divided into two categories, allergic and non-allergic. Drug-induced is a type of non-allergic rhinitis.
OBJECTIVE: A review of the literature was conducted. Very little is known about this topic and there are no publications to date solely devoted to drug-induced rhinitis.
METHODS: A PubMed and Medline search was conducted using a combination of the keywords; drug, medication, rhinitis, congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, pruritus, vasomotor, reflex, neurogenic, allergic and non-allergic. …

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is the most well understood of the types of allergic rhinitides. The disease is characterized by sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion upon exposure to pollen allergens in susceptible individuals. These symptoms can cause considerable misery in affected patients. Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder as well as new insights into the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis enable practitioners to provide more effective therapy.

In snouts of pigs from 5 of 8 piggeries in New South Wales examined, there was evidence of severe atrophic rhinitis. In 220 pigs examined from one piggery there was no correlation between the severity of atrophic rhinitis and growth rate or back-fat thickness. There was also no correlation between the extent of lung pathology and back-fat thickness. Pleurisy or pericarditis did cause a significant reduction in growth rate.

BACKGROUND: Nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) is characterized by nasal symptoms similar to allergic rhinitis (AR) without an IgE-mediated immune response. Limited data are available on the natural history of NAR in its progression toward AR, particularly in children. This study evaluates the development of AR in children who were previously diagnosed with NAR.
METHODS: Children with the diagnosis of NAR during the period of 2005-2007 were reevaluated in 2010. Nasal symptoms, disease severity, comorbidities, rescue medication scores (RMSs), and skin-prick test to aeroallergens were assessed.
