Ringer's malate solution protects against the multiple organ injury and dysfunction caused by hemorrhagic shock in rats.

Malic acid, in the form of its anion malate, is a key intermediate in the major biochemical energy-producing cycle known as the citric acid or Krebs cycle. In this study, the authors investigated the protective effect of a novel crystalloid solution of Ringer's malate following fluid resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock using a rat model. Under general anesthesia, Sprague-Dawley male rats were subjected to 60 min of hemorrhagic shock (40 mmHg for 60 min) followed by crystalloid resuscitation. Groups were as follows: (1) sham shock, (2) normal saline, (3) Ringer's lactate, and (4) Ringer's malate

Hypertonic sodium lactate versus lactated ringer's solution for intravenous fluid therapy in operations on the abdominal aorta.

Fifty-eight patients who were to undergo aortic reconstruction were prospectively randomized into two groups to compare the effects of perioperative fluid replacement with isotonic and hypertonic crystalloid solutions. Blood loss was replaced with packed red blood cells, and additional fluid was given as either Ringer's lactate solution (RL, 130 mEq sodium/L, 274 mOsm/L) or a hypertonic balanced salt solution (HSL, 250 mEq sodium/L, 514 mOsm/L). Fluid was administered to maintain the cardiac filling pressure within 3 torr of the preoperative level and the cardiac output (CO) at or above the pr

Effect of intravenous administration of lactated Ringer's solution or hetastarch for the treatment of isoflurane-induced hypotension in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of IV administration of crystalloid (lactated Ringer's solution [LRS]) or colloid (hetastarch) fluid on isoflurane-induced hypotension in dogs. ANIMALS: 6 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: On 3 occasions, each dog was anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane and instrumented with a thermodilution catheter (pulmonary artery). Following baseline assessments of hemodynamic variables, end-tidal isoflurane concentration was increased to achieve systolic arterial blood pressure (SABP) of 80 mm Hg. At that time (0 minutes), 1 of 3 IV treatments (no fluid, LRS [80 mL/k

[Effects of various Ringer's solutions on acid-base balance in rats in hemorrhagic shock and with hepatic dysfunction].

We investigated the effects of bicarbonated Ringer's solution (BR) on arterial blood acid-base balance, and compared these with the effects of lactated Ringer's solution (LR) and acetated Ringer's solution (AR) in rats in hemorrhagic shock. Rats underwent 70% reduction of hepatic blood flow and blood shedding of 1.5% of body weight. Each solution was infused through the femoral vein at a rate of shed blood volume x 8.hr-1 for 30 min under urethane anaesthesia. After the blood shedding, arterial blood pH and HCO3-decreased but plasma lactate concentration increased. These parameters improved si

Lactated Ringer vs Normal Saline Solution During Sickle Cell Vaso-Occlusive Episodes.

IMPORTANCE: Sickle cell disease (SCD), a clinically heterogenous genetic hemoglobinopathy, is characterized by painful vaso-occlusive episodes (VOEs) that can require hospitalization. Patients admitted with VOEs are often initially resuscitated with normal saline (NS) to improve concurrent hypovolemia, despite preclinical evidence that NS may promote erythrocyte sickling. The comparative effectiveness of alternative volume-expanding fluids (eg, lactated Ringer [LR]) for resuscitation during VOEs is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of LR to NS fluid resuscitation in patients wi

Effects of University of Wisconsin and lactated Ringer's solutions to ischemia-reperfusion injury in isolated cremaster flap.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a topic that has been much-discussed by various researchers during the last decade in plastic surgery. Though much progress has occurred, the problem is not totally solved yet. In particular, the pathophysiology of reperfusion injury in skeletal muscle has not been clearly elucidated. The aims of this study are to assess the effects of a variety of perfusants on the microcirculation after reperfusion injury and to better understand the pathophysiology of reperfusion injury. Isolated cremaster flaps were performed in 44 rats, preserving the femoral artery an

Effects of normal saline versus lactated Ringer's solution on organ function and inflammatory responses to heatstroke in rats.

BACKGROUND: Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition characterized by severe hyperthermia and multiple organ dysfunction. Both normal saline (NS) and lactated Ringer's solution (LR) are commonly used for cooling and volume resuscitation in heatstroke patients; however, their specific impacts on patient outcomes during heatstroke management are poorly understood. Given that the systemic inflammatory response and multiple-organ damage caused by heat toxicity are the main pathophysiological features of heatstroke, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of NS and LR on the production

The volume of lactated Ringer's solution required to maintain preload and cardiac index during open and laparoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have emphasized the importance of perioperative fluid restriction. However, fluid restriction regimens may increase the likelihood of insufficient perioperative fluid administration or may result in excess intravascular crystalloid replacement. We postulate that the use of transesophageal echocardiography may reduce the amount of crystalloid administered during open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery. METHODS: Fifteen ASA I and II patients scheduled for open colorectal surgery, and 15 patients scheduled for laparoscopic surgery were studied. Lactated Ringer's solut

Lactated Ringer's Solution Reduces Severity, Mortality, Systemic and Local Complications in Acute Pancreatitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Fluid therapy is the cornerstone of early supportive therapy in acute pancreatitis (AP). Regrettably, the type of fluid is still debated among clinicians, despite recent evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We aimed to incorporate all evidence from RCTs comparing lactated Ringer's solution (LR) with normal saline (NS) in adult and pediatric AP patients, with particular emphasis on clinically relevant outcomes. We evaluated RCTs comparing intravenous fluid resuscitation with LR to NS in adult or pediatric AP patients according to a prospectively registered protocol (CRD42021224542
