In recent years salinomycin has emerged as a promising anticancer drug. Many literature reports have proved its remarkable antiproliferative activity. Moreover, chemical modifications of salinomycin lead to analogues with even higher cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines and a better selectivity index for malignant cells than those of the unmodified compound or a standard anticancer drug such as doxorubicin. The supramolecular aggregation of three diimidazolium-functionalized perylene bisimides, differing in the alkyl chain length was investigated. These salts form aggregates in solvents like chloroform, dichloromethane, and glycerol. Solvent-, concentration-, and temperature-dependent spectroscopic studies were carried out, evidencing the occurrence of an isodesmic, enthalpy-driven aggregation process, underpinned by π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements and SEM images revealed that these salts aggregate in chloroform into elongated structures.

The inhibitory properties of halide salts on palmito polyphenoloxidase (PPO) are described. Halide salts have the same inhibitory effect on the two forms of palmito PPO separated by hydrophobic chromatography. Fluoride and chloride ions showed a non-competitive, mixed type inhibition while bromide and iodide ions were found to be non-competitive inhibitors. A study of the Ki for the different halide salts showed that the smaller F- ion is a stronger inhibitor than I- and Br- and that Cl- has the highest Ki value. Pulmonary damage is one of the rare complications of gold salts therapy. The reaction is that of drug hypersensitivity. The clinical and radiological features as well as the respiratory function tests are that of an interstitial lung disease. This condition is described in four patients and its main features are discussed in the light of the relevant literature. The importance of an early diagnosis is emphasized. Most of the patients recover after the withdrawal of the drug and during corticosteroid treatment.

Here we present the differential diagnosis of neonatal hypernatraemia through the example of a four-day-old boy admitted for fever. This report highlights a case of severe hyponatraemia secondary to excessive sweating and salt [corrected] poor fluid consumption and low salt diet in hot conditions. The case was complicated by the presence of marked hypokalaemia caused by secondary hyperaldosteronism confirmed, for the first time, by the presence of grossly elevated serum renin and aldosterone concentrations. With the rise in global temperature affecting even temperate climates doctors, especially in acute and general medicine, may be faced with this condition more often.
