Changes in the parameters of the spine (grade of kyphosis, total mobility of dorsolumbal spine, lumbal Schober's sign, finger-ground distance) within one year were studied in 103 Scheuermann-patients. In patients doing regular exercises the kyphosis did not increase and their finger-ground distance improved significantly; whilst in patients not doing regular exercises the kyphosis increased slightly though significantly, and their finger-ground distance did not improve. These result prove the beneficial effect of regular exercises.

This is a report on a study of 96 students aged 17 and 18 at two of our local schools. Each student completed a questionnaire, underwent a simple examination of the spine and a measurement of the passive stretch in the hamstring muscles, and had a lateral X-ray of the dorsal and upper lumbar spine. An overall X-ray evidence of Scheuermann's Disease was detected in 60% of males and 23% of females. The possible significance of these results is discussed.

In addition to the typical form of Scheuermann's disease, atypical and localized manifestations also occur. Examples are paradiscal defects and the development of vertebral synostosis. These unusual manifestations are illustrated by reference to a number of patients.

A 56-year-old man was treated with bisphosphonates following incidental findings of vertebral deformities on a chest radiograph taken for cough. After re-evaluation with DEXA and spinal radiographs he was diagnosed with Scheuermann's disease, not osteoporosis. His gastrointestinal symptoms resolved after bisphosphonates were stopped. A 29-year-old man with spastic paraparesis of insidious onset was discovered to have thoracic cord compression by a combination of kyphosis and thoracic disc herniation. Radiologic evaluation showed evidence of Scheuermann's disease, of which thoracic kyphosis is one manifestation. Neurologic signs are uncommon in Scheuermann's disease and few cases have been successfully managed with resolution of neurologic deficit. This patient made a virtually complete recovery after thoracic cord decompressions by costrotransversectomy and transthoracic approaches.
