Value of Quantitative Sensory Testing in the Evaluation of Genital Sensation: Its Application to Female Sexual Dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is multifactorial, with psychological and organic elements. Genital sensation, an important component of sexual response, has until recently not been subjected to adequate clinical appraisal. During the past 15 years we have performed Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) to assess genital sensation in healthy women and women with FSD. AIM: To review available evidence of QST in the investigation of genital sensation in women with FSD. METHODS: We examined data obtained from assessment of genital sensation in normal women and those with different co

Visceral perception in functional gastro-intestinal disorders: disease marker or epiphenomenon?

The pathophysiology of functional gastro-intestinal disorders remains unclear. A relatively new approach to these disorders has been the study of visceral sensory perception. A decreased pain threshold to intraluminal balloon distension has been demonstrated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and non-cardiac chest pain. This altered visceral sensitivity does not appear to extend to somatic sensation; patients have generally had normal sensory thresholds to various stimuli applied to the skin. It is uncertain whether altered gut sensation represents a primary event

William Porterfield (ca. 1696-1771) and his phantom limb: an overlooked first self-report by a man of medicine.

EARLY REPORTS OF phantom limbs by Ambroise Paré and René Descartes were based on second- or third-hand descriptions provided by amputees. William Porterfield (ca. 1696-1771) was a prominent Scottish physician and was possibly the first man of medicine to write about his experiences after having a leg amputated. Porterfield was an authority on vision; he devised the first optometer and examined accommodation after cataract operations. Rather than using the phenomenon of a phantom limb to question the veracity of the senses (as Descartes had done), Porterfield integrated his phantom limb experie

The Zuckerman-Kuhlman personality questionnaire in bipolar I and II disorders: a preliminary report.

Patients with bipolar disorder have tendencies of higher impulsivity and sensation seeking, they might contribute differently to the emotional states of bipolar I (BD I) and II (BD II). We administered the Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), the Plutchik-van Praag Depression Inventory (PVP), the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in 23 patients with BD I, 22 BD II, and 64 healthy volunteers. Both BD I and II scored higher on ZKPQ Impulsive sensation seeking (and its Impulsivity facet), Neuroticism-anxiety and Aggression-hostility, and on PVP

Panic disorder, somatization, and the new cross-cultural psychiatry: the seven bodies of a medical anthropology of panic.

This article aims to adduce a framework that will allow for the cross-cultural study of panic disorder. The authors take sensation as the key unit of analysis, aiming to contribute to a medical anthropology of sensation. The seven analytic perspectives that are suggested in the article are the following: the full spectrum of panic attack sensations (the sensation body), the biological generation of panic sensations (the biological body), sensation as invoking an ethnophysiology (the ethnophysiological body), sensation as metaphor (the metaphoric body), sensation as invoking the landscape (the

[Nocturnal choking sensation].

There are many different types of sleep disorders. The majority of sleep-related breathing disorders can be attributed to sleep apnoea syndrome. Nocturnal choking sensation is a different symptom, for which we present two cases. Nocturnal choking sensation is a terrifying symptom for the patient and the diagnostic approach can be challenging. Aside from sleep choking syndrome, this symptom may appear with nocturnal laryngospasm, insular epilepsy and nocturnal gastro-oesophageal reflux. A thorough patient history and observation of the nocturnal event, sometimes supported by EEG findings, may p

Upper GIT Endoscopic Evaluation and Psychological State Assessment of Patients with Globus Sensation.

Globus sensation is a subjective feeling of a lump or foreign body in the throat without interfering swallowing of food. It is a persistent and distressing sensation in throat. It affects about 6% of population. But cause of globus is still unknown. Exact aetiology of globus is considered to be multifactorial. Some other studies also show association between globus and psychological distress including anxiety and depression. As there is no established pharmacological treatment, adequate investigations with negative result could reassure patients and improve their symptoms. In this prospective

Sensory phenomena in obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous disorder with some forms related to tics and Tourette's disorder. The present study was undertaken to investigate the sensory phenomena in patients with OCD and/or Tourette's disorder to determine if these phenotypic features represent valid clinical indices for differentiating tic-related OCD from non-tic-related OCD. METHOD: We evaluated 20 adult outpatients with OCD, 20 with OCD plus Tourette's disorder, and 21 with Tourette's disorder, using a semistructured interview designed to assess s

Low platelet monoamine oxidase activity in pathological gambling.

Decreased platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been reported in association with sensation-seeking personality type and in some mental disorders associated with a lack of impulse control. Pathological gambling itself has been related with both sensation-seeking and reduced impulse control. Platelet MAO activity was investigated in 15 DSM-III-R pathological gamblers from our outpatient clinic. Gamblers had a significantly lower platelet MAO activity than a group of 25 healthy controls. The range of MAO levels in gamblers was also significantly shorter than in controls. In controls, pla

Sensory phenomena in obsessive-compulsive disorder and tic disorders: a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: A variety of subjective experiences have been reported to be associated with the symptom expression of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS). First described in TS patients, these subjective experiences have been defined in different ways. There is no consensus in the literature on how to best define subjective experiences. This lack of consensus may hinder the understanding of study results and prevents the possibility of including them in the search for etiological factors associated with OCD and TS. METHODS: The objective of this article was to review

Therapeutic approaches for functional Globus Pharyngeus: A systematic review of studies from 2000 to 2025.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review therapeutic interventions for functional globus pharyngeus in adults. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 (PROSPERO CRD420251185872), PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for interventional studies (2000-2025; last search March 2026). Eligible studies enrolled adults with functional globus by Rome III/IV criteria or exclusion of structural pathology. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted data; disagreements were resolved by discussion. Risk of bias was assessed with RoB 2 and ROBINS-I. RESULTS: Fifteen studies (eight

Sensory sensitivity after acquired brain injury: A systematic review.

Patients with acquired brain injury frequently report experiencing sensory stimuli as abnormally under- (sensory hyposensitivity) or overwhelming (sensory hypersensitivity). Although they can negatively impact daily functioning, these symptoms are poorly understood. To provide an overview of the current evidence on atypical sensory sensitivity after acquired brain injury, we conducted a systematic literature review. The primary aim of the review was to investigate the behavioural and neural mechanisms that are associated with self-reported sensory sensitivity. Studies were included when they s

Empty Stomach Sensation and Bothersome Hunger Sensation: Two Relevant Clinical Manifestations in Patients with Dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Dyspepsia, characterized by symptoms in the gastroduodenal region, poses diagnostic challenges despite Rome IV criteria. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of two underreported symptoms, Empty Stomach Sensation and Bothersome Hunger Sensation, in dyspeptic patients, and their association with the disorder of gut-brain interaction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study surveyed 1,211 individuals in northwest Mexico, assessing dyspeptic symptoms with pictograms and a 7-point Likert scale. Logistic regression analyzed associations between dyspepsia, Empty Stomach Sensati

Upper GI Disorders: Pathophysiology and Current Therapeutic Approaches.

Symptoms referable to the upper digestive tract are associated with abnormalities of upper gastric neuromuscular function including abnormalities of motility, sensation, and absorption. Of the upper digestive tract, the stomach is of particular importance in its role in symptom generation and is highlighted in this chapter. Gastric symptoms can be associated with alterations in the rates of gastric emptying, impaired accommodation, heightened gastric sensation, or alterations in gastric myoelectrical activity and contractility. Treatment of gastric neuromuscular disorders requires an understan

[Clinical techniques for use in neurological physical examinations. III. Sensory functions].

AIMS: The purpose of this work is to focus on the main practical aspects of the techniques used for the neurological physical examination of the sensory functions and to present an approach for the practice of this study. DEVELOPMENT: Despite the difficulty often involved in interpreting its results, today the formal examination of sensation is still an important part of a complete neurological evaluation and remains valid in the search for a correct diagnosis and suitable treatment. We recommend clinicians to carry out a brief but consistent and effective exploration in a systematic, flexibl
