Epistemic agency in self-tracking: a conceptual literature review of quantified self as citizen science for health.

INTRODUCTION: Citizen science for health invites non-professionals into research, but the degree to which individuals control the knowledge-making process varies widely. Personal science-the self-directed, inquiry-driven practice associated with the Quantified Self (QS) community-represents a high-agency form of self-tracking in which the individual is both subject and scientist. Drawing on work on epistemic injustice, we use "epistemic agency" to describe whether a person exercises genuine control over inquiry rather than merely supplying data. AIM: To assess the utility of an agency-based f

Hypnotic predictors of agency: Responsiveness to specific suggestions in hypnosis is associated with involuntariness in fibromyalgia.

Hypnosis is associated with alterations in the sense of agency which can play a role in its utilization as a nonpharmacological option for pain management. The goal of the current study was to examine the relationships between responsiveness to suggestions in hypnosis and alterations of the sense of agency among patients with fibromyalgia. Ninety-eight participants with fibromyalgia underwent two hypnotizability assessments followed by the Sense of Agency Rating Scale. Clinical pain measures were also collected. Involuntariness was predicted by responsiveness to control, ideomotor, and dissoci…

Neural Substrates of Body Ownership and Agency during Voluntary Movement.

Body ownership and the sense of agency are two central aspects of bodily self-consciousness. While multiple neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural correlates of body ownership and agency separately, few studies have investigated the relationship between these two aspects during voluntary movement when such experiences naturally combine. By eliciting the moving rubber hand illusion with active or passive finger movements during functional magnetic resonance imaging, we isolated activations reflecting the sense of body ownership and agency, respectively, as well as their interaction, …

Action modulates visual detection and metacognitive sensitivity.

Visual false pattern perception can increase in response to a lack of control. However, prior studies have manipulated control over relatively long timescales by altering participants' beliefs. We investigated whether short-timescale sensorimotor discrepancies, which are known to disrupt sense of agency, also lead to an increase in false perceptions. Participants were instructed either to voluntarily press a key, which triggered immediate or delayed visual feedback (i.e., white noise images with or without an embedded object), or to passively observe the feedback. We also explored metacognitio…

The dynamic bodily self across lifespan: Agency, ownership, and the plasticity of internal body models.

Two fundamental aspects of research on bodily self-consciousness, agency and body ownership, have recently seen exponential growth. The seminal paper of Botvinick and Cohen in 1998 provided a vital psychophysical tool for studying the bodily self - the rubber hand illusion, in which one feels as if an external object becomes a part of one's body. Recent motor control views of ownership highlight the influence of agency, the sense that one is in control of one's movements. Technological advancements have facilitated more ecologically valid experimental paradigms, such as virtual versions of the

Why must we attribute our own action to ourselves? Auditory hallucination like-experiences as the results both from the explicit self-other attribution and implicit regulation in speech.

The sense of agency, which is the awareness that "I am the one who causes action," is important in understanding passive schizophrenic symptoms and bodily self-consciousness. However, this potential linkage between subjective self-other attribution (explicit agency) and automatic self-monitoring of an action (implicit agency) has not been examined fully. The present study included two experiments conducted with the same group of healthy participants (N=48) in order to examine explicit (Exp. 1) and implicit (Exp. 2) measures of the sense of agency in speech. Exp. 1 suggested that participants w…

Disentangling the neural correlates of agency, ownership and multisensory processing.

The experience of the self as an embodied agent in the world is an essential aspect of human consciousness. This experience arises from the feeling of control over one's bodily actions, termed the Sense of Agency, and the feeling that the body belongs to the self, Body Ownership. Despite longstanding philosophical and scientific interest in the relationship between the body and brain, the neural systems involved in Body Ownership and Sense of Agency, and especially their interactions, are not yet understood. In this preregistered study using the Moving Rubber Hand Illusion inside an MR-scanner…

The psychophysical limits of agency: Biological motion percepts are dramatically weakened in slow-moving displays.

The most important stimuli we perceive may be other agents, given their effects on our fitness. Accordingly, perception may be specialized for processing agents, and one of the best-studied examples is biological motion: displays of surprisingly few moving dots ("point-light walkers"; PLWs) nevertheless give rise to rich percepts of locomoting agents. Is this a complex instance of general motion perception, such that PLWs simply inherit the lower thresholds of general motion perception? Or might biological motion have a distinct lower "speed limit"? Observers viewed PLWs moving in place, alway

The foundational role of autonomy for brain-computer interfaces.

Invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) pose a challenge for describing human-system interactions because they involve a depth of engagement that is difficult to disentangle. This is particularly problematic when clear authorship of decisions is needed. This presupposes that such devices might also decide autonomously in certain situations. Although the use and implementation of such devices are highly disputed in practical ethics, they seem to offer at least therapeutic benefits for persons with, e.g., Parkinson's disease. That is why it is indispensable to develop a conceptual framework th

Impact of sleep quality on work-related musculoskeletal disorders among nurses: a structural equation model integrating psychosocial factors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are highly prevalent among nurses and threaten workforce stability. Although sleep disturbance is known to be associated with WMSDs, the psychosocial pathways underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. This study aims to examine whether sense of agency and perceived social support mediate the relationship between sleep quality and WMSDs among hospital nurses, using a structural equation modeling approach. METHODS: A convenience sample of staff nurses was recruited from six tertiary hospitals in three Chinese …

Belief of agency changes dynamics in sensorimotor networks.

Controlling an event through one's own action usually induces a sense of agency, a feeling that arises when an expected outcome matches the intention. The neural correlates of this feeling remain controversial however, as experimental manipulation of the action-outcome chain often introduces mismatch or prediction errors that strongly correlate with the sense of agency. Here, we took a different approach and manipulated the causal belief (self-attribution vs. computer-attribution) by external cues during matched visuo-motor tapping conditions. With magneto-encephalography, we studied the sense…

Agency and Anxiety: Delusions of Control and Loss of Control in Schizophrenia and Agoraphobia.

We review the distinction between sense of agency and sense of ownership, and then explore these concepts, and their reflective attributions, in schizophrenic symptoms and agoraphobia. We show how the underlying dynamics of these experiences are different across these disorders. We argue that these concepts are complex and cannot be reduced to neural mechanisms, but involve embodied and situated processes that include the physical and social environments. We conclude by arguing that the subjective and intersubjective dimensions of agency and ownership cannot be considered in isolation from one…

A neurophenomenological fMRI study of a spontaneous automatic writer and a hypnotic cohort.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the neurophenomenology of automatic writing (AW) in a spontaneous automatic writer (NN) and four high hypnotizables (HH). METHODS: During fMRI, NN and the HH were cued to perform spontaneous (NN) or induced (HH) AW, and a comparison task of copying complex symbols, and to rate their experience of control and agency. RESULTS: Compared to copying, for all participants AW was associated with less sense of control and agency and decreased BOLD signal responses in brain regions implicated in the sense of agency (left premotor cortex and insula, right premotor cortex, and supp…

Explicit Agency in Patients with Cervical Dystonia: Altered Recognition of Temporal Discrepancies between Motor Actions and Their Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the cognitive processing of movement have been demonstrated in patients with dystonia. The sense of agency, which is the experience of initiating and controlling one's own actions, has never before been studied in these patients. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the sense of agency is altered in patients with cervical dystonia. METHODS: We used an explicit metacognitive agency task in which participants had to catch targets with a cursor by moving a computer's mouse. The task included several conditions in which the control over the cursor could be disrupted b…

Chimpanzees attribute agency to virtual animals, but not to self-propelled shapes.

Discriminating agents from inanimate objects is essential for predicting others' behaviour. Although chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) differentiate between agents and objects, the cues underlying this ability remain unclear. We investigated chimpanzees' agency attribution using a virtual-environment paradigm in which they interacted with four competitors varying in two putative agency cues: self-propulsion and animal-like morphology. We measured facial, vocal and gestural emotive responses directed at these competitors as behavioural markers of agency attribution. Chimpanzees showed clear evidenc

Reward-related self-agency is disturbed in depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The sense of agency, or the belief in action causality, is an elusive construct that impacts day-to-day experience and decision-making. Despite its relevance in a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, it is widely under-studied and remains difficult to measure objectively in patient populations. We developed and tested a novel cognitive measure of reward-dependent agency perception in an in-person and online cohort. METHODS: The in-person cohort consisted of 52 healthy control subjects and 20 subjects with depression and anxiety disorders (DA), including major depressive disorder a…

Loss of agency in apraxia.

The feeling of acting voluntarily is a fundamental component of human behavior and social life and is usually accompanied by a sense of agency. However, this ability can be impaired in a number of diseases and disorders. An important example is apraxia, a disturbance traditionally defined as a disorder of voluntary skillful movements that often results from frontal-parietal brain damage. The first part of this article focuses on direct evidence of some core symptoms of apraxia, emphasizing those with connections to agency and free will. The loss of agency in apraxia is reflected in the monitor…

Motor agency: a new and highly sensitive measure to reveal agency disturbances in early psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of young adults at risk of schizophrenia is essential for preventive approaches of the illness. Nevertheless, classic screening instruments are difficult to use because of the non-specific nature of the signs at this pre-onset phase of illness. The objective of the present contribution was to propose an innovating test that can probe the more specific symptom of psychosis, i.e., the sense of agency, which is defined as being the immediate experience of oneself as the cause of an action. More specifically, we tested whether motor agency is abnormal in early psychosis…

Perceptual sensitivity, but not metacognitive monitoring, is shaped by increases and decreases in control.

The sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over one's actions in the environment. It is typically thought to arise from comparisons between predicted action outcomes and actual sensory feedback. However, previous studies have shown that, in addition to this error detection process, a process that detects regularities between sensory input and one's actions is also involved in the emergence of the sense of agency. It remains unclear whether these distinct perceptual processes share a common metacognitive monitoring system. We addressed this question using a control change detection ta…
