Epicuticular wax of sweet sorghum influenced the microbial community and fermentation quality of silage.

Epicuticular wax, as secondary metabolites (hydrophobic compounds) covering plant surface, plays important roles in protecting plants from abiotic and biotic stresses. However, whether these compounds will influence fermentation process of silage is still not clear. In this study, two sweet sorghum cultivars with varying epicuticular wax on sheath (bloom), Yajin 2 (YJ, less bloom), and Jintian (JT, dense bloom), were harvested at flowering and maturing stages, and ensiled with or without bloom, aiming to evaluate the effects of bloom on fermentation quality, feed nutrition and microbial commun

Effects of Pyroligneous Acid on Diversity and Dynamics of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Alfalfa Silage.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are recognized as contaminants due to their potential risk for human and environment. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of pyroligneous acid (PA), a waste of biochar production, on fermentation characteristics, diversity, and dynamics of ARGs during ensiling of alfalfa using metagenomic analysis. The results indicated that PA decreased (P < 0.05) dry matter loss, pH value, gas production, coliform bacteria count, protease activity, and nonprotein-N, ammonia-N, and butyric acid contents and increased (P < 0.05) lactic acid content duri

Anaerobic fermentation results in loss of viability of Fasciola hepatica metacercariae in grass silage.

The parasitic liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, has a detrimental impact on food security and poses a welfare concern to ruminant livestock. F. hepatica metacercariae, shed from an intermediate mud snail host, encyst on vegetation and present a source of infection to grazing livestock. Feeding grass silage to ruminants is a common practice, however the role it plays in the transmission of F. hepatica remains largely unknown. Our current understanding relies on historical studies that are not representative of current silage production and did not apply molecular methods to detect F. hepatica DNA

Impact of agricultural practices on microbiology of hay, silage and flour on Finnish and French farms.

Exposure to microorganisms in farm environments may cause respiratory disorders, e.g. asthma, organic dust toxic syndrome and allergic alveolitis. By reducing microbiological deterioration of organic materials, some agricultural practices have a protective effect. Microbiological analyses were carried out on hay, silage and flour samples (n=107) from farms in Finland and France (n=23) that use different methods of haymaking. High concentrations of Absidia corymbifera were found in approximately 35 % of French hay samples and only 10 % of Finnish hay samples. Concentrations of Eurotium spp. wer

Tea Tree Essential Oil Enriches Lactic Acid Bacteria and Improves Paper Mulberry Silage Quality.

Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) is a high-protein forage, but its high buffering capacity and low water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content hinder silage fermentation. This study evaluated the effect of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil (TTO) as a natural additive for paper mulberry silage. TTO was added at 0 (CK), 500 (CSD), and 1000 mg/kg (CSG) fresh weight, with samples collected on days 7, 15, 30, and 90. After 90 days, CSD had the lowest pH and the highest lactic acid content. NH3-N/TN was significantly lower than in CK (p < 0.05), and the retention of dry matter, cr

ESM2-Guided Context-Aware Annotation Completion Supplements Carbohydrate Metabolism Coverage in Silage Microbial Metagenomes.

Functional annotation gaps limit the interpretation of carbohydrate metabolism in silage microbiomes. We developed Context-Aware Annotation Completion (CAAC), a framework integrating ESM2 embeddings, genomic-neighborhood features, three-class classification, confidence-tiered neighbor voting, and Enzyme Commission (EC)-to-KEGG Orthology (KO) mapping. CAAC was applied to 21 metagenomes from uninoculated and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei-inoculated silages sampled before ensiling and at 7 and 90 days. Five-fold cross-validation yielded an F1-macro of 84.64% for negative, positive, and hard-sequen

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum A1, C1 and C10 Are Potential Probiotics Isolated from Pineapple Residual Silage.

The production and consumption of pineapple creates large quantities of residues. Ensiling these residues might help to minimize the waste burden and meet the intensive feed demand for ruminants. Proper lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are not only responsible for pineapple residual silage fermentation, but might also deliver probiotics. The aim of this study was to isolate LAB strains with probiotic functions, and to enhance intestinal antioxidant capacity from naturally fermented pineapple residues. A total of 47 LAB isolates with gram-positive, catalase-negative, nonhemolytic properties were used

Tannin-mediated improvement of Moringa oleifera silage: nutritional quality, aerobic stability, and methane mitigation.

BACKGROUND: Methane emissions during livestock production have become an important source of greenhouse gases. Silage feed, as the main feed source for ruminants, plays a significant role in the livestock industry. METHODS: In this experiment, three different tannin-related compounds (tannic acid, gallic acid and polyethylene glycol) were added as silage additives to Moringa oleifera leaf silage. Their effects on the nutritional quality, fermentation quality, aerobic stability and microbial community of Moringa oleifera leaf silage were determined, and in vitro experiments were conducted to de

Intoxication of dairy cows in Uruguay by ingestion of cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) seeds in sorghum silage.

The ingestion of cotyledons or seeds of cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) causes poisoning as a result of acute liver failure. Here we describe a spontaneous outbreak of X. strumarium toxicity in dairy cows in Uruguay. The outbreak occurred in the winter when the cows were fed sorghum silage contaminated with X. strumarium seeds. Clinical signs of depression, anorexia, paddling, opisthotonos, muscle tremors, sternal recumbency, and death were observed 2-12 h following ingestion. Of 160 Holstein cows, 30 (19%) animals were ill, and 6 (4%) died. At autopsy, the liver had a diffuse mottled appearan

Trehalose improves cold tolerance of Pediococcus pentosaceus OL77 and enhances low-temperature oat silage fermentation.

Low temperature remains a major bottleneck in silage fermentation, especially in cold regions and high-altitude areas. This study investigated the regulatory role of compatible solutes in enhancing the cold adaptation of Pediococcus pentosaceus OL77 and their synergistic application in oat silage under suboptimal temperatures (5°C-15°C). RT-qPCR analysis showed that expression of the cold shock protein gene CspP was sharply induced at 5°C, indicating its central role in cold-stress response. Exogenous trehalose and betaine significantly downregulated CspP expression, promoted bacterial growth,

Microbial and metabolic responses of maize silage to leaf blight: implications for fermentation and protein stability.

Foliar fungal diseases lead to a significant reduction in dry matter of plants, thereby negatively affecting silage fermentation kinetics. This study investigated the effects of leaf blight on ensiling kinetics, microbial succession, and nitrogen metabolism in whole-crop maize, and further examined whether inoculation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HT1 could mitigate disease-induced proteolysis through remodeling of the metabolic pathways. Three treatments were established: (i) healthy maize silage (CON), (ii) maize silage affected by leaf blight (DCON), and (iii) maize silage affected by
