Effect of ski boot settings on tibio-femoral abduction and rotation during standing and simulated skiing.

Ski boots are designed to transfer high forces from the skier to the ski. For this purpose they are made of stiff materials and constrain th … erent foot rotations and ski boot canting settings on knee kinematics during standing and simulated skiing. Knee kinematics was measured by means of motion analysis and with the help of skin-mounted markers on 20 subjects. The ski boots in their standard settings significantly constrained the skier to an unnatural valgus position. Ski boot base rotation …

Knee angular displacement and extensor muscle activity in telemark skiing and in ski-specific strength exercises.

Much of the training of competitive telemark skiers is performed as dry-land exercises. The specificity of these exercises is important for optimizing the training effect. Our aim here was to study the activation of the knee extensor musculature and knee angular displacement during competitive telemark skiing and during dry-land strength training exercises to determine the specificity of the latter. Specificity was analysed with respect to angular amplitude, angular velocity, muscle action and electromyographic (EMG) activity. Five male telemark skiers of national and international standard vo…

Mechanisms of anterior cruciate ligament ruptures in skiing.

In the years 1980-1989, 78 patients with an acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture sustained during downhill or cross-country skiing were treated at the University Hospital of Tampere, Finland. In every case, the ACL rupture was verified at arthroscopy or open surgery. The injury mechanism could be clarified for 51 patients using a collection of pictures of the most typical injury mechanisms in skiing. Thirty-nine of them (76%) were women and 12 men (24%). In 32 cases (63%) the injury occurred during downhill skiing and in 19 cases (37%) during cross-country skiing. In 24 cases (47%) t…

[Epidemiology of internal knee injuries in Alpine skiing].

The incidence of sport injuries in Switzerland is twice as high compared to traffic injuries. Soccer and alpine skiing play the most important role in sport injuries. For the last twenty winter seasons all winter sport injuries were analysed at the hospital of Davos. About 85% are injuries caused by alpine skiing resulting in a total of 24,684 for the last twenty years. There is a great decline in the incidence of lower leg fractures with a contrary development of knee injuries. The treatment-quotient (amount of knee injuries in alpine skiers per 10(4) kilometers of vertical drop skied) has in…

Development of pelvic abscess following water-skiing injury.

Several descriptions of hydrostatic injuries while water-skilng have been described, including lacerations of the perineum, vagina, and cervix. Salpingitis or pelvic abscess resulting from water-skiing injuries are rare but important complications. A case of a pelvic abscess following a fall while water-skiing is described. The abscess was drained laparoscopically, resulting in a good clinical outcome. The mechanism of injury and recommendations for prevention are also presented. Upper genital tract infection may result from water-skiing injuries due to hydrostatic pressure forcing bacteria an…

Differing injury patterns in snowboarding and alpine skiing.

This is a study of all people presenting to ski patrollers with ski and snowboard injuries during the 1995 season. There were 476 casualties of whom 396 were skiers and 57 were snowboarders. Information was collected retrospectively on the mechanism, region and injury, and also personal details of the casualties. The information was compared with the numbers of ski and snowboard injuries for the 1994 season. Injuries due to snowboarding increased in frequency, from 4 per cent in 1994 to 11 per cent in 1995. Snowboarders were younger, predominantly male, and were more often beginners than were

Tendon injuries about the ankle resulting from skiing.

In essence there are three afflictions about the ankle that result from skiing: rupture of the Achilles tendon, Achilles tendinitis, and dislocation of the peroneal tendon. The cause of Achilles tendinitis and Achilles tendon rupture is, in fact, pressure within the fascial compartment of the Achilles tendon, which is caused by a swollen distal soleus muscle, occluding the circulation, and thereby producing avascular necrosis with subsequent tendinitis yielding to rupture. Four types of peroneal tendon dislocations and related problems are presented.

Methoxyflurane in early analgesic therapy by ski patrol members on Swiss ski slopes - an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pain therapy is an important first-response measure in the pre-clinical care of trauma patients. Injured individuals on ski slopes are usually given first aid by members of the ski patrol. The early implementation of adequate pain therapy by these paramedical rescuers can increase patient satisfaction and have a positive effect on the entire treatment process. In this context, we analysed the administration of methoxyflurane by ski patrol members on Swiss ski slopes. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we evaluated 172 datasets, of which 149 concerned patients who

Mutations in SKI in Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome lead to attenuated TGF-β responses through SKI stabilization.

Shprintzen-Goldberg syndrome (SGS) is a multisystemic connective tissue disorder, with considerable clinical overlap with Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndromes. These syndromes have commonly been associated with enhanced TGF-β signaling. In SGS patients, heterozygous point mutations have been mapped to the transcriptional co-repressor SKI, which is a negative regulator of TGF-β signaling that is rapidly degraded upon ligand stimulation. The molecular consequences of these mutations, however, are not understood. Here we use a combination of structural biology, genome editing, and biochemistry to sho

A comparison of recreational skiing- and snowboarding-related injuries at a Colorado ski resort, 2012/13-2016/17.

The purpose of this study was to compare injury patterns between recreational skiers and snowboarders. Injured skiers (n = 3,961) and snowbo … ons with natural objects (skiers = 9.7%, snowboarders = 7.4%) were common injury mechanisms. Common skiing injuries were knee sprains (20.5%) and head trauma (8.9%); common snowboarding injuries were wrist fractures (25.7%), shoulder separations (9.1%), and head trauma (9.0%). Given that injury patterns significantly differ between sports, it is importan …

A New Method of Measuring 3-D Ground Reaction Forces under the Ski during Skiing on Snow.

A new method was developed for measuring the distribution of real time ground reaction forces under the snow ski. A platform composed of 20 separate beams was buried in snow under the ski track. Vertical, cross horizontal, and longitudinal horizontal force components were measured with strain gauge bridges separately on each beam, and the results were recorded with a data logger at 90 Hz. The test results for two types of skating skis are described. Anomalous behavior was observed in horizontal force components, where negative force values were recorded on some sections of the ski at the end o

Glide Time Relates to Mediolateral Plantar Pressure Distribution Rather Than Ski Edging in Ski Skating.

The purpose of this study was (i) to assess the differences in relative glide time and both ski edging angle and plantar pressure mediolateral distribution in skiers of different levels and (ii) to further investigate the relationships between the aforementioned variables. Twelve male cross-country skiers (6 national and 6 regional level) skied at 4.2 m s-1 on a 2.5° uphill snow track using the V2 technique. The relative glide time (in percentage of contact time) and mediolateral plantar pressure distribution variables (asymmetry index, ASI) were derived from pressure insole measurements. Ski

Determinants of a simulated cross-country skiing sprint competition using V2 skating technique on roller skis.

The present study investigated the performance-predicting factors of a simulated cross-country (XC) skiing sprint competition on roller skis, on a slow surface. Sixteen elite male XC skiers performed a simulated sprint competition (4 x 850 m heat with a 20-minute recovery) using V2 skating technique on an indoor tartan track. Heat velocities, oxygen consumption, and peak lactate were measured during or after the heats. Maximal skiing velocity was measured by performing a 30-m speed test. Explosive and maximal force production in the upper body was determined by bench press (BP). Subjects also …
