Snake bite poisoning in pregnancy. A review of the literature.

With our 2 cases, there are 30 reported cases in English of snake bite poisoning in pregnancy with some details presented and 20 cases without details, for a total of 50 cases. We reviewed the maternal and fetal outcomes in the 30 cases that had such information. Poisoning by members of the Crotalidae family (rattlesnakes, cotton-mouths [water moccasins] and copperheads) during pregnancy carries with it a fetal wastage rate of 43% and a maternal mortality rate of 10%. Pit viper bites cause a bleeding diathesis from the fact that the venom of these snakes contains a procoagulant that defibrinat

Spinal cord ischemia: The "snake bite sign".

Descriptive signs in radiology can aid in easier pattern recognition and quicker diagnosis. In spinal cord ischemia, paired anterior-horn T2-hyperintensities have traditionally been known as the "owl's eyes" or "snake eyes" sign. We discuss how these signs, while visually apt, convey no pathophysiologic context and propose renaming this finding the "snake bite sign". The image still evokes two punctate marks, yet the metaphor extends to a snake bite (two fang-like dots) rather than two bright foci (eyes) staring back at the viewer. Moreover, besides the sign metaphorically resembling a traumat

Herbal Compounds as an Antidote Against Snake Bite.

Snakebites have been declared a neglected health problem that is considered a national disease by the WHO (world health organisation). Asian countries like India have high snakebite death rates due to short antidotes and poorly equipped doctors. In today's scenario, local resources like herbs need to be used to prepare cheap antidotes and are often available to victims. Snake bites should be viewed as an emergency problem and require additional national guidelines, doctor training, expertise, and human concentration for effective and timely treatment-measures to be taken to ensure the availabi…

Attempted suicide by snake bite: A case study.

Snake bite is an important public health issue in India and is almost always accidental in manner. Suicide by snake bite or injection of snake venom is extremely rare. Suicidal ideation and behavior is known to be influenced by various socio-economic and psychological factors. The method employed for suicide is also influenced by the occupation of the victim. We report a case where a snake charmer had attempted suicide by inflicting a bite by a monocled cobra.

[Case report: Snake bite - an odd case].

Emergency medical service is called by a 54-year-old man bitten by his rattlesnake. Upon initial survey we find the patient in a cardiopulmonary stable condition. He has bite marks and pain on his rapidly swelling middle finger of his right hand. Our initial treatment is immobilization of the patient. The snake raiser has already called the poison control center in Munich. By the help of this institution we bring him to a hospital having the right antivenom on hand.

Symmetrical peripheral gangrene following snake bite.

SPG (Symmetrical peripheral gangrene) is defined as symmetrical distal ischemic damage at two or more sites in the absence of large vessels obstruction. It has been ascribed to a number of infectious and non infectious conditions including connective tissue, cardiovascular, neoplastic and iatrogenic causes. We report a unique case of SPG in a 35-year-old Indian female who developed spontaneous gangrene of the distal phalanges of the right and left index, middle, ring and little fingers and the distal phalanges of all toes of the right and left foot following a snake bite. There have been very

Oxidant/antioxidant status in cases of snake bite.

BACKGROUND: Snake bites are an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially in rural areas. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARLY), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) and total sulfhydryl group (-SH) levels in patients with snake venom poisoning. METHODS: The study included 49 patients with snake bite envenomation (Group 1) and 39 healthy volunteers as the control group (Group 2). Plasma PON, ARLY, Cp, and MPO activity and LOOH and -SH levels were measured. Laborat…

Repeated snake bite for recreation: Mechanisms and implications.

Snake venom use for recreational purposes has been documented earlier. Willfully subjecting oneself to repeated lethal snake bite as a source of getting relieved of stress and recreation observed in two healthy software engineers, without any underlying psychiatric ailments or comorbidities along with probable mechanisms, are reported. Emergency physicians and practitioners have to be aware of novel methods of exposure to snake venom so as to recognize such cases and treat them accordingly.

A snake bite by the Burrowing Asp, Atractaspis engaddensis.

During routine milking of a group of Burrowing Asps Atractaspis engaddensis, one of the authors was bitten in the index finger by one fang, as is characteristic of bites by snakes of the genus. Local effects, oedema, erythema and numbness appeared within minutes, followed by systemic effects, including general weakness, sweating, pallor, fluctuations in the level of consciousness, vomiting and watery non-bloody diarrhoea. Gross oedema of the hand developed and extended up to the forearm. Two hours after admission to the hospital, blood pressure rose to 180/110, the ECG showed normal sinus rhyt

[Local complications after poisonous snake bite].

The case of a zoo keeper who was bitten on the left finger by a venomous snake (Vipera xanthina) is reported. The administration of antivenom prevented the development of systemic poisoning but had no effect on the extent of the local complications. A compartment syndrome with a concomitant severe reaction at the bite site required fasciotomy of the upper and lower arm. The extensor tendon of the involved finger ruptured spontaneously, many weeks after wound healing was completed. Therefore, delayed local complications following snake bites may occur, even if signs of systemic poisoning are mi…

[Acute compartment syndrome following snake bite].

The experience with snake bites, causing local complications is discussed. Whenever systemic envenomation occurs, antivenin is the treatment of choice. Tissue necroses are treated by early debridement and a possible closed compartment syndrome demands the open fasciotomy.

Trypsin fails as Australian snake bite cure.

Trypsin has been claimed a new and effective treatment for venomous snake bite. We found that significant inactivation of snake venom lethal potency occurred in vitro when trypsin was incubated with venom and subsequently injected into mice. Premixing of tiger snake venom (TSV) and trypsin just before injection did not significantly increase the survival rate of mice over that of controls injected with TSV alone. Trypsin injected 10 to 30 minutes after TSV injection did not increase the survival rate of mice compared with controls. Specific antivenom was effective as an antidote when there was

Human snake bite victims: the successful detection of circulating snake venom by radiommunoassay,

A new solid-phase radioimmunoassay has been developed which allows positive identification of the type of snake venom in human tissue and fluids and its accurate quantitation. Tiger snake venom at a level of 210 ng/ml was detected post mortem in the serum of a child, and brown snake venom was detected in two adults bitten by unidentified snakes. Apart from forensic applications, the assay will be useful in studying clinical aspects of envenomation and the use of antivenenes.

First-hand knowledge about snakes and snake-bite management: an urgent need.

Snake-bite is a well-known but fairly ignored medical problem in India. Lack of precise first aid knowledge for snake-bite is a substantial reason for its severe fatality in human beings. The present study is comprised of a pilot survey that assesses and evaluates the knowledge of people of different occupations (teachers, students, farmers, medical residents, and miscellaneous) about snakes and snake-bite management. The pilot survey was conducted through a well-structured open-ended questionnaire about experiences with snakes and snake-bites and first aid measures for accidental snake-bites.
