Social adjustment in in-patients with affective disorders: predictive factors.

We assessed social adjustment in 145 depressed in-patients using the self-reporting Social Adjustment Scale (42-item version) to evaluate the contribution of demographic and clinical variables and examine social functioning at different levels of depression. Our results indicate that the presence of a psychopathology in association with interpersonal sensitivity, hostility and perceived social support aspects -- and not the severity of current depressive symptoms -- were the most important factors affecting social adjustment. As expected, social disturbances are more pronounced in severe depre

Predictive factors of social disability in patients with eating disorders.

RESULTS: On the Groningen Social Disabilities Schedule, 86% of the anorexics and 65% of the bulimics had disability regarding the 'social role', and 86% and 61 % disability regar

Factors Associated With Diagnostic Delay in Axial Spondyloarthritis: Impact of Clinical Factors and Social Vulnerability.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) often experience significant delay between symptom onset and diagnosis for reasons that are incompletely understood. We investigated associations between demographic, medical, and socioeconomic factors and axSpA diagnostic delay. METHODS: We identified patients meeting modified New York criteria for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or 2009 Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society criteria for axSpA in the Mass General Brigham health care system between December 1990 and October 2021. We determined the duration of diagnostic dela

Prenatal risk factors (unplanned pregnancy, mental health services, high stress, use of tobacco or alcohol, young children at home or with special needs, trouble paying bills) were compared in the year before and year after Hurricane Michael in affected counties (n = 18,887). Log-Poisson regression with robust variance was used

Social Media Addiction among Vietnam Youths: Patterns and Correlated Factors.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has investigated how the excessive use of social media has an impact on one's functioning. Youths are among the most vulnerable subjects to the impacts of social media overuse, especially in Vietnam (a developing country). However, very little evidence has been provided on social media addiction. This work aims to determine the prevalence of social media addiction amongst Vietnamese individuals and the factors associated with social media addiction. METHOD: An online cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2020 in Vietnam. Participants completed the st

Case-control study of environmental and social factors influencing cryptosporidiosis.

We report on the first case-control study to investigate the role of wider environmental and socioeconomic factors upon human cryptosporidiosis. Using GIS the detailed locations of 3368 laboratory-confirmed cases were compared to the locations of an equal number of controls. All cases were genotyped enabling Cryptosporidium hominis and Cryptosporidium parvum to be examined separately. When all cryptosporidiosis cases were analyzed, several location variables were strongly associated with illness: areas with many higher socioeconomic status individuals, many individuals aged less than 4 years,

Predictive factors of social disability in anorexic and bulimic patients.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether subjects suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) would demonstrate more severe social disability than a control group; and whether social disability could be best explained as a function of the eating disorder itself or as a function of comorbid anxiety or depressive disorders. METHOD: Subjects were 166 AN subjects, 105 BN subjects and 271 control subjects matched for age, sex and socio-economic status. Prevalence of anxiety or depressive disorders was assessed (through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric

Relation between smoking prevalence and various social factors in Japan.

Although the smoking prevalence among women is significantly low compared to that among men in Japan, the prevalence in young Japanese women has been steadily increasing recently. The relationship between the prevalence of smoking among the general population and various social factors was investigated with a special emphasis regarding the influence of household size on the smoking prevalence of young Japanese women. Thirty-one thousand and six hundreds twenty-seven subjects of 20 years and older were randomly selected from the general population of Japan. The Ministry of Health and Welfare, J…

Social and nonsocial factors in the Childhood Autism Rating Scale.

The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was factor analyzed to determine if distinct and independent "subgroups" of symptoms could be derived, which would be consistent with the current multidimensional theory and nosology for autism. To address this issue, the CARS was factor analyzed for a sample of 90 children with diagnoses of either autism or PDDNOS, based on DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria. Five factors emerged: Social Communication, Emotional Reactivity, Social Orienting, Cognitive and Behavioral Consistency, and Odd Sensory Exploration. Factor-based scales were created. These factor-bas

Changing social factors and their long-term implications for health.

This paper presents findings and arguments to show the power of social factors to affect health at the individual and at the national level. Social factors most strongly and negatively associated with health, at both levels, are those that indicate disorganisation and disruption, perceived helplessness and lack of support, low educational attainment, and poverty. Adverse changes in these social factors and their negative effects on health have been observed in many studies. When such adverse changes affect the lives and health of children, and those who will become parents, they affect the pre…

Social and environmental factors and atypical depression in old age.

This community-based epidemiological survey is concerned with relationships between social and environmental factors and atypical depression in a Finnish population aged 60 years or over. The occurrence of atypical depression was related to older age, widowed or divorced marital status, having moved during the previous few years, living in a small dwelling near the local population center, having neighbors living in the same building, living alone, being frequently alone, a low number of hobbies and many long-standing or current social stress factors. In addition, the atypical depressive perso

Social factors affecting clinical caseload in Italian good practice areas.

Italian statistics indicate that fewer people are living alone than in Great Britain. Psychiatric Case Register figures show that the treated prevalences are nearly half those found in British Case Register areas. The level of staffing in good practice areas like South-Verona or Trieste is at least similar and at times higher than British or American counterparts. The clinical caseload of Italian clinical teams is therefore lower. The Italian patients may have a greater social network's availability by the mere fact of living in the same household of relatives. It is hypothesized that these el

Social and environmental factors influencing contraceptive use among black adolescents.

In 1979 survey among sexually active unmarried black adolescents from Chicago found that 28 percent of the young women and 18 percent of the young men used a contraceptive at first intercourse. Statistically significant differences in such contraceptive use among teenage women were found for three social and environmental characteristics: social class, parents' marital status and neighborhood quality. Thus, 41 percent of the young women from the highest social class used contraceptives at first intercourse, but only 17 percent of those from the lowest class did so. The proportions were 35 perc
