Laypeople's Views on the Narrative Identity and Societal Treatment of Genetically Modified People.

Genome editing in human embryos could raise new ethical issues by changing future people's narrative and numerical identity. Most philosophers agree that some genetic modifications would have larger effects on identity than others, but they disagree on what criteria might explain these differences and have not supported their claims experimentally. We recruited 416 Americans through the crowdsourcing website Mechanical Turk. Participants were presented with 30 genetic modifications commonly discussed in bioethics and completed a questionnaire about how each modification might affect future peo

Is the membrane estrogen receptor, GPER1, a promiscuous receptor that modulates nuclear estrogen receptor-mediated functions in the brain?

Contribution to Special Issue on Fast effects of steroids. Estrogen signals both slowly to regulate transcription and rapidly to activate kinases and regulate calcium levels. Both rapid, non-genomic signaling as well as genomic transcriptional signaling via intracellular estrogen receptors (ER)s can change behavior. Rapid non-genomic signaling is initiated from the plasma membrane by a G-protein coupled receptor called GPER1 that binds 17β-estradiol. GPER1 or GPR30 is one of the candidates for a membrane ER (mER) that is not only highly expressed in pathology i.e. cancers but also in several b

The Pitfalls of Genomic Data Diversity.

Biomedical research recruitment today focuses on including participants representative of global genetic variation-rightfully so. But ethnographic attention to practices of inclusion highlights how this agenda often transforms into "predatory inclusion," simplistic pushes to get Black and brown people into genomic databases. As anthropologists of medicine, we argue that the question of how to get from diverse data to concrete benefit for people who are marginalized cannot be presumed to work itself out as a byproduct of diverse datasets. To actualize the equitable translation of genomics, prac

Social regulation of gene expression in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

Reproduction is a critically important event in every animals' life and in all vertebrates is controlled by the brain via the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. In many species, this axis, and hence reproductive fitness, can be profoundly influenced by the social environment. Here, we review how the reception of information in a social context causes genomic changes at each level of the HPG axis.

Body lice and head lice (Anoplura: Pediculidae) have the smallest genomes of any hemimetabolous insect reported to date.

The human body louse, Pediculus humanus humanus L. (Anoplura: Pediculidae), is a vector of several diseases, including louse-borne epidemic typhus, relapsing fever, and trench fever, whereas the head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Anoplura: Pediculidae), is more a pest of social concern. Sequencing of the body louse genome has recently been proposed and undertaken by National Human Genome Research Institute. One of the first steps in understanding an organism's genome is to determine its genome size. Here, using flow cytometry determinations, we present evidence that body louse geno

Placental biology links genetic, epigenetic, ancestral, and social determinants to maternal-fetal health inequities.

Black and African American women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, including placenta-mediated complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and miscarriage. These inequities arise from the interaction of social and environmental conditions with biological pathways that become embedded over the life course, with the placenta serving as a central mediator. In this review, we examine how placental biology integrates genetic variation, epigenetic regulation, paternal contributions, immune processes, and lived social

Hemimetabolous genomes reveal molecular basis of termite eusociality.

Around 150 million years ago, eusocial termites evolved from within the cockroaches, 50 million years before eusocial Hymenoptera, such as bees and ants, appeared. Here, we report the 2-Gb genome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and the 1.3-Gb genome of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. We show evolutionary signatures of termite eusociality by comparing the genomes and transcriptomes of three termites and the cockroach against the background of 16 other eusocial and non-eusocial insects. Dramatic adaptive changes in genes underlying the production and perception of pherom

Dynamic clustering of genomics cohorts beyond race, ethnicity-and ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Recent decades have witnessed a steady decrease in the use of race categories in genomic studies. While studies that still include race categories vary in goal and type, these categories already build on a history during which racial color lines have been enforced and adjusted in the service of social and political systems of power and disenfranchisement. For early modern classification systems, data collection was also considerably arbitrary and limited. Fixed, discrete classifications have limited the study of human genomic variation and disrupted widely spread genetic and phenot

Is Blood Thicker Than Water? The Influence of Kin Within a Bull Shark Social Network.

The influence of kinship on social structure (what we novelly refer to as "kinfluence") has been studied extensively within terrestrial taxa yet remains poorly understood in marine systems. While kin-based associations have been explored in teleost fish and cetaceans, few have investigated this within elasmobranchs, and none have combined fine-scale social behavior with both genomic relatedness and categorical kinship inference. This study utilized the Shark Reef Marine Reserve in Fiji, a site where a population of adult bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) aggregate in response to provisioning,

Genetic and Social Determinants of Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Inhibitor-Induced Angioedema: A Precision Medicine Health Equity Study.

Angioedema is a life-threatening adverse drug reaction associated with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors, characterized by localized swelling in the deep layers of the skin. Well-established evidence indicates an up to fivefold higher incidence of RAAS inhibitor-induced angioedema in self-identified Black patients compared to White patients. The mechanisms underlying this health disparity remain poorly understood and are often attributed to race, a poor proxy for interindividual genetic similarity and social stressors. Here, we investigate the genetic and social determinan

Epidemiology and phylogenomic characterization of the Clade IIb C.1 Mpox outbreak in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2023-2024).

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the Monkeypox virus, which is divided into two main genetic clades: Clade I and Clade II. A large-scale outbreak linked to Clade IIb emerged in 2022 and rapidly spread to more than 100 countries worldwide. Here, we describe the first and only documented Mpox outbreak in Cambodia (2023-2024), the public health outbreak response efforts and analysis, and integrating epidemiological and genomic approaches. To investigate the outbreak, samples from suspect cases were confirmed using qPCR before virus whole genome sequences were obtained for phylogenomic analy

Translating Genomic Competencies Into Cancer Nursing Practice: A Scoping Review.

UNLABELLED: Genomics-informed cancer care is central to precision oncology; however, integrating genomic competencies into routine practice remains challenging. Despite the development of competency frameworks, limited clarity exists regarding how these competencies are operationalised within oncology settings. AIM: To synthesise and critically examine how genomic competencies are conceptualised across the literature, identify areas of convergence and gaps and examine implications for clinical implementation and cancer nursing workforce development. DESIGN: Scoping review. METHODS: The revi

IQSEC2 Deficiency Results in Abnormal Social Behaviors Relevant to Autism by Affecting Functions of Neural Circuits in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex.

IQSEC2 is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) for ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (Arf6), of which protein is exclusively localized to the postsynaptic density of the excitatory synapse. Human genome studies have revealed that the IQSEC2 gene is associated with X-linked neurodevelopmental disorders, such as intellectual disability (ID), epilepsy, and autism. In this study, we examined the behavior and synapse function in IQSEC2 knockout (KO) mice that we generated using CRIPSR/Cas9-mediated genome editing to solve the relevance between IQSEC2 deficiency and the pathophysiology of neurodevelop

Applying Mental Model Methods to Characterize Understanding of Gene-Environment Influences: The Case of Podoconiosis in Ethiopia.

The rapid pace of genomic discovery has raised public expectation and concerns about the utility of new discoveries and their potential to exacerbate health disparities. Improving literacy concerning gene and environmental (GxE) contributors to disease is needed to avoid commonly observed deterministic misconceptions about genomics. Mental models approaches that incorporate community engagement processes could be used to inform GxE literacy-building interventions. We used a mental models approach to describe and systematically compare expert and lay understanding of GxE interactions, using the

Forensic molecular pathology: its impacts on routine work, education and training.

The major role of forensic pathology is the investigation of human death in relevance to social risk management to determine the cause and process of death, especially in violent and unexpected sudden deaths, which involve social and medicolegal issues of ultimate, personal and public concerns. In addition to the identification of victims and biological materials, forensic molecular pathology contributes to general explanation of the human death process and assessment of individual death on the basis of biological molecular evidence, visualizing dynamic functional changes involved in the dying

The landscape of structural variation in coppery titi monkeys ( Plecturocebus cupreus ).

Coppery titi monkeys ( Plecturocebus cupreus ) are an important non-human primate model for studying neurobiology and social behavior, in part owing to their relatively unusual combination of social monogamy and paternal care. Despite this importance, relatively little is known regarding the underlying population genomics of this platyrrhine. This study presents high-coverage, whole-genome sequencing data from 26 individuals which, combined with a highly accurate multi-algorithm ensemble approach, was used to characterize the first map of structural variation in the species. This novel genomic

Nursing, omics, and artificial intelligence: Precision health's trifecta.

Precision health individualizes care by integrating biological, environmental, and social drivers of health, a perspective that aligns with the holistic lens of nursing. Advances in omics, including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, microbiomics, and metabolomics, have expanded our understanding of health and disease. However, the complexity of these data has often limited integration into clinical practice. Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming precision health in nursing by making omics complexity actionable. This paper argues that nursing must actively engag

Comprehensive behavioral analyses of mice with a glycine receptor alpha 4 deficiency.

Glycine receptors (GlyRs) are ligand-gated chloride channels comprising alpha (α1-4) and β subunits. The GlyR subunits play major roles in the mammalian central nervous system, ranging from regulating simple sensory information to modulating higher-order brain function. Unlike the other GlyR subunits, GlyR α4 receives relatively little attention because the human ortholog lacks a transmembrane domain and is thus considered a pseudogene. A recent genetic study reported that the GLRA4 pseudogene locus on the X chromosome is potentially involved in cognitive impairment, motor delay and craniofaci

The new nutrition science project.

OBJECTIVE: To show that nutrition science, with its application to food and nutrition policy, now needs a new conceptual framework. This will incorporate nutrition in its current definition as principally a biological science, now including nutritional aspects of genomics. It will also create new governing and guiding principles; specify a new definition; and add social and environmental dimensions and domains. METHOD: A narrative review of nutrition science, its successes and achievements, and its dilemmas, paradoxes, shortcomings, dissonances and challenges. Reference is made to 16 associat
