BACKGROUND: Health literacy is increasingly recognized as an essential determinant for the health of the population. Liver patients report perceived stigma to be a considerable problem. Little is however known about liver health literacy in the general population and to what extent liver disease is considered stigmatizing in comparison with other chronic diseases. We aimed to explore these knowledge gaps.
METHODS: We performed an exploratory e-survey in a statistically representative sample of 500 Swedes from the general population. A questionnaire developed for this purpose investigated awar

HIV stigma and fears surrounding the disease pose a challenge for public health interventions, particularly those that target pregnant women. In order to reduce stigma and improve the lives of vulnerable populations, researchers have recognized a need to integrate different types of support at various levels. To better inform HIV interventions, the current study draws on social-ecological and evolutionary theories of reproduction to predict stigma and fear of contracting HIV among pregnant women in South India. The aims of this study were twofold: compare the social-ecological model to a modif

Recent interest in optimizing diagnostic thresholds for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) screening tools is motivated by the need to improve diagnostic accuracy and facilitate early treatment of PTSD within high-risk populations. However, existing approaches focus on diagnostic accuracy without considering the costs of screening and subsequent treatment, nor the impact of social stigma - which can undermine their effectiveness. We develop a modeling framework that captures the complex interplay between the screening selection rate, screening and treatment outcomes and costs, and the role

HIV-related stigma experiences impede healthcare engagement and adversely impact people living with HIV. However, the mechanisms that account for the association between stigma and poor health are not fully known. Grounded in contemporary theories of stigma and health, we conducted a 16-month prospective cohort study of 435 younger people living with HIV (ages 18-36), with 352 (81%) retained over 16 months. We tested two primary hypotheses: (a) in cross-sectional analyses, perceived social support would mediate for the association between HIV stigma experiences and missing recent HIV care appo

AIMS: The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of how nurses experience their practice with homeless people. More specifically, we wanted to consider the role as it is practised and certain clinical characteristics associated with social disaffiliation and stigma.
BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown the need to implement adapted nursing interventions to address the problems homeless people encounter in obtaining health services. According to the literature, such interventions have positive health outcomes for homeless people, who exhibit complex health needs.

Exposure to HIV-related stigma and mental health problems have both been reported by HIV-positive individuals. We analyzed the role of social support as a mediator in the relationship between HIV-associated stigma and mental health among adults living with HIV. A total of 303 people aged 18 years and over (M = 40.5; SD = 11.2) with an HIV diagnosis who were selected using a non-probability convenience sampling method in Trujillo, Peru, participated in this study. The Macro PROCESS program for SPSS was used for data analysis. We found that stigma exerts an indirect effect on the mental health a

BACKGROUND: Stigma in many contexts is defined as a process of differentiation, othering, and discrimination. Its external manifestations include outward negative attitudes, and bad behaviour targeted at those with a specific condition. SARS-CoV-2 infections have been seen as a dangerous clinical condition towards people. The aim of the study was to describe the risk factors for suffering social exclusion and stigma in a group of people with COVID-19.
METHODS: We included 95 people into a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study. They were invited to participate voluntarily to an

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a medical condition that affects both males and females and can cause the individuals biopsychosocial, spiritual, and medical detriments. Quality of life among such couples or singles is a matter of concern. The question that we need to address is whether infertility affects the quality of life. Does the stigma associated with Infertility deter Infertile females from leading normal lives? This research explores how infertility stigma affects the quality of life of infertile females and whether perceived social support reduces the stress related to stigma thereby co

This paper examines how African immigrants living with HIV negotiate and reconstruct their productive (i.e., educational and career opportunities), sexual, and reproductive identities. We used data from a mixed-methods study to explore how stigma and social networks in which participants were embedded shaped how they understood and negotiated their role expectations and responsibilities. Participants revealed how HIV not only changed their identities and limited their sex life, partner choices, and fundamental decisions about fertility and reproduction, but also presented them with the opportu

BACKGROUND: The 2013-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic resulted in more infections and deaths than all prior outbreaks in the 40-year history of this virus combined. This study examines how experiences of EVD infection, and preventive measures such as social distancing, were linked to experiences of stigma and social exclusion among those reintegrating into their communities.
METHODS: Key informant interviews (n = 42) and focus group discussions (n = 27) were conducted in districts with a high prevalence of EVD and representing geographical and ethnic diversity (n = 228 participants). T

This article updates the qualitative research on Iran reported in the 2012 article by Tong et al. "The experiences of commercial kidney donors: thematic synthesis of qualitative research" (Tong et al. in Transpl Int 25:1138-1149, 2012). The basic approach used in the Tong et al. article is applied to a more recent and more comprehensive study of Iranian living organ donors, providing a clearer picture of what compensated organ donation is like in Iran since the national government began regulating compensated donation. Iran is the only country in the world where kidney selling is legal, regula

RATIONALE: Often overlooked clinically, social anxiety is common in schizophrenia and may represent a barrier to quality of life and social function. Little is known, however, about the possible roots of social anxiety in schizophrenia or their relationship to social anxiety over time.
METHODS: To explore this issue, we examined the relationship between self-esteem, self-stigma, positive and negative symptoms, emotional discomfort and affect recognition with concurrent and prospective assessments of social anxiety using the Multidimensional Anxiety Questionnaire in a sample of seventy-eight p

With most scholarly attention directed toward understanding the stigma experiences of individuals with mental illness, less attention has been given to associative stigma: an understudied form of social exclusion and devaluation experienced by the social ties of stigmatized individuals. This study advances scholarly understanding of associative stigma by drawing on social network methods to better illuminate how the quantity and quality of social relationships with those dealing with mental illness impact experiences of perceived discrimination. Using a nationally representative sample from th

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigma is a complex societal phenomenon that is harboured especially by female sex workers because of the interplay of a myriad of factors. As such, a precise measure of the contribution of different social practices and characteristics is necessary for both understanding and intervening in matters related to perceived stigma. We developed a Perceived Stigma Index that measures the factors that greatly contribute to the stigma among sex workers in Kenya, and thereby inform a framework for future interventions.
METHODS: Social Practice Theory was adopted in the developmen

HIV-related stigma in the wider community compounds the suffering of people living with HIV (PLWH) and hampers effective HIV prevention and care. This study examines the level of public stigma toward PLWH in Hong Kong and associated social-cultural factors. A telephone survey was conducted in June-July 2016 with 1080 Chinese adults aged 18-94 randomly selected from the general population. The results indicate substantial degree of public stigma toward PLWH. Overall, 58.1% of the participants endorsed at least one statement indicating negative social judgment of PLWH. Over 40% attributed HIV in
