Amended engineered soil promotes coordinated soil-plant-microbiome responses during early-stage slope restoration.

Amended Engineered Soil (AES), a functional substrate incorporating biomass-derived straw fiber, has been applied for the ecological restoration of degraded slopes. However, how AES affects the coordinated responses of substrate structure, root development, and rhizosphere microbiome assembly during early-stage restoration remains unclear. In this study, AES and Conventional Engineered Soil (CES) were compared during a 90-day slope restoration experiment using Lolium perenne as the target species. Compared with CES, AES substantially improved substrate moisture and nutrient conditions, with wa

PFAS in plant-biosolids-soil systems: Distribution, fractionation, and effects on soil microbial communities.

This study examined the behavior of six U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds in vegetated soils amended with Class A and Class B biosolids. Short-chain PFAS were evenly distributed throughout the 8-cm soil column, while long-chain PFAS accumulated in the lower layers. Sequential extraction showed that short-chain PFAS dominated the water-leachable fraction, while long-chain PFAS were more concentrated in the methanol-extractable fraction. Plant cultivation appeared to promote the redistribution of long-chain PFAS from the wat

[Stabilization of Cd-contaminated Soil with Thiol-modified Biochar and Response of Soil Microorganisms].

To explore the stabilization effect of livestock manure biochar on Cd-contaminated soil and its impact on the soil environment, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the stabilization efficiency of cattle manure-biochar (BC) and thiol-modified biochar (SBC) on Cd in soil and their effect on the soil properties and microbial community. The structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the effect pathways of BC and SBC on the soil microbial community. The results showed that BC and SBC increased soil pH, available potassium, available phosphorus, and organic matter content but decr

Effect of Soil Amendments on Cd Accumulation by Spinach from a Cd-Mineralized Soil.

Cadmium (Cd)-mineralized soils occur in many nations. When these soils are noncalcareous, crops and especially leafy vegetables such as lettuce ( L.) and spinach ( L.) may accumulate levels of Cd in their edible portions that exceed international standards. Vegetable crops grown on Lockwood loam from Monterey County, CA, absorb an excessive amount of Cd into their edible portions. Agronomic or genetic management alternatives are needed to allow the use of these otherwise highly productive soils for spinach. Previous research has shown that zinc (Zn) fertilizer plus limestone incorporation or b

Evaluation of soil flushing of complex contaminated soil: an experimental and modeling simulation study.

The removal of heavy metals (Zn and Pb) and heavy petroleum oils (HPOs) from a soil with complex contamination was examined by soil flushing. Desorption and transport behaviors of the complex contaminants were assessed by batch and continuous flow reactor experiments and through modeling simulations. Flushing a one-dimensional flow column packed with complex contaminated soil sequentially with citric acid then a surfactant resulted in the removal of 85.6% of Zn, 62% of Pb, and 31.6% of HPO. The desorption distribution coefficients, KUbatch and KLbatch, converged to constant values as Ce increa

Binding constants of divalent mercury (Hg2+) in soil humic acids and soil organic matter.

Distribution coefficients (K(OC)) for Hg2+ binding by IHSS Pahokee peat humic acid (PHA) and humic acids separated from O-horizons and peats in a northern temperate forest were determined using a competitive ligand-exchange method. All measurements were made at low ratios of added Hg2+ to reduced S. The commonly used chelating agents, EGTA and DTPA, were found to be ineffective competitive ligands; thus, we used DL-penicillamine, a synthetic amino acid with a thiol group. Calculated free [Hg2+] at equilibrium is very low, ranging from 10(-26.4) at pH 1.9 to 10(-36.9) at pH 5.8. Corresponding l

Stability of pentobarbital in soil.

Intravenous injection of barbiturates, particularly pentobarbital (5-ethyl-5-pentan-2-yl-1,3-diazinane-2,4,5-trione), is a widely used method to euthanize large animals such as horses. However, one concern with this method is the fate of pentobarbital after the disposal of the carcass. As tissues decompose, pentobarbital may leach into the soil and from there migrate to groundwater. A method using methanol extraction, solid phase concentration, and liquid chromatography (LC/MS) has been developed to measure pentobarbital in soils. Recovery of pentobarbital from soil averaged approximately 85%

Biodegradation of dimethylsilanediol in soils.

The biodegradation potential of [14C]dimethylsilanediol, the monomer unit of polydimethylsiloxane, in soils was investigated. Dimethylsilanediol was found to be biodegraded in all of the tested soils, as monitored by the production of 14CO2. When 2-propanol was added to the soil as a carbon source in addition to [14C]dimethylsilanediol, the production of 14CO2 increased. A method for the selection of primary substrates that support cometabolic degradation of a target compound was developed. By this method, the activity observed in the soils was successfully transferred to liquid culture. A fun

Feedstock-dependent biochar properties shape short-term soil CO2 emissions through microbial enzyme-associated processes beyond the effect of soil pH in black soil.

Black soils represent globally important reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC), yet the mechanisms regulating short-term carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions following biochar amendment remain poorly understood. Although biochar-induced alkalization has been widely proposed as a key mechanism influencing soil carbon mineralization, whether increased soil pH alone can explain feedstock-dependent CO2 responses remain unresolved. Here, we investigated the effects of biochars derived from six feedstocks on CO2 emissions, soil chemical properties, microbial functional traits, and extracellular enzyme a

Rethinking the soil core microbiome.

The concept of a core microbiome emerged from host-associated research to describe microbial members or functions conserved across clearly defined spatial, temporal, and biological boundaries. In soil- and plant-associated microbiome research, however, the term has increasingly shifted toward analytically defined subsets selected using study-specific thresholds or criteria. Synthesizing recent literature and cross-site analyses of bioenergy crop field soils, we show that the original biological meaning of the core microbiome has been blurred by dataset-specific analytical criteria. Taxa design

Soil biodiversity and human health.

Soil biodiversity is increasingly recognized as providing benefits to human health because it can suppress disease-causing soil organisms and provide clean air, water and food. Poor land-management practices and environmental change are, however, affecting belowground communities globally, and the resulting declines in soil biodiversity reduce and impair these benefits. Importantly, current research indicates that soil biodiversity can be maintained and partially restored if managed sustainably. Promoting the ecological complexity and robustness of soil biodiversity through improved management

Stroma: fertile soil for inflammation.

Biological therapies for the management of immune mediated inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis have proven to be extremely successful in recent years. Despite these successes, even the most effective of therapies do not lead to cure. Why chronic inflammation persists indefinitely within the rheumatoid synovium despite an absence of continuous stimulation, and why some patients with early synovitis progress to persistent disease whilst others do not, has remained unexplained. In contrast to the paradigm that stromal cells are biochemically active but immunologically passive, ther

Brazilian Cerrado soil Actinobacteria ecology.

A total of 2152 Actinobacteria strains were isolated from native Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) soils located in Passos, Luminárias, and Arcos municipalities (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The soils were characterised for chemical and microbiological analysis. The microbial analysis led to the identification of nine genera (Streptomyces, Arthrobacter, Rhodococcus, Amycolatopsis, Microbacterium, Frankia, Leifsonia, Nakamurella, and Kitasatospora) and 92 distinct species in both seasons studied (rainy and dry). The rainy season produced a high microbial population of all the aforementioned genera.

Cl2 deposition on soil matrices.

Deposition of chlorine gas, Cl(2), on synthetic soil sample matrices was examined in a small chamber to ascertain its potential significance as a chemical sink during large-scale releases. The effects of organic matter, clay and sand mass fractions of the soil matrix, soil packing, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light on the observed Cl(2) deposition were examined. Organic matter content was found to be the dominant soil variable investigated that affected Cl(2) deposition; all other variables exhibited no measurable effect. Analytical results from the top 8.5mm of soil columns exposed to Cl

Madura foot - mind the soil.

'Madura foot' or mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous soft-tissue infection, caused by either true fungi (eumycetoma) or Gram-positive aerobic bacteria (actinomycetoma). The infection is endemic to equatorial, tropical or sub-tropical regions. However, sporadic cases have been reported in the Western world mostly in the migrant population. The disease follows a slow progression from the time of traumatic inoculation to presentation of symptoms, characterised by a triad of chronic indurated swelling, draining sinuses and discharging granules. The granules are diagnostic as they represent collect
