In-situ immobilization of cadmium-polluted upland soil: A ten-year field study.

In-situ immobilization is an effective and economically viable strategy for remediation of soil extensively polluted with heavy metals. The long-term sustainability is critical for the remediation practice. In the present study, a ten-year experiment was performed in a Cd-polluted agricultural field to evaluate the long-term stability of lime, silicon fertilizer (SF), fused calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (FCMP), bone charcoal, steel slag, and blast furnace slag with one-off application. All amendments had no significant effect on biomass but significantly reduced Cd uptake by Artemisia

Combination of bioremediation and electrokinetics for the in-situ treatment of diesel polluted soil: A comparison of strategies.

The aim of this work is to compare different strategies based on electrokinetic soil flushing and bioremediation for the remediation of diesel-polluted soil. Four options were tested at the laboratory scale: single bioremediation (Bio), performed as a control test; a direct combination of electrokinetic soil flushing and biological technologies (EKSF-Bio); EKSF-Bio with daily polarity reversal of the electric field (PR-EKSF-Bio); and a combination of electrokinetic soil flushing and a permeable reactive biological barrier (EKSF-BioPRB). Four batch experiments of 14 days duration were carried o

Heavy metal solubility in podzolic soils exposed to the alkalizing effect of air pollutants.

The heavy metal content of pine forest soil was studied near the boundary between Russia and Estonia, an area characterized by large amounts of acidic and basic air pollutants, mainly sulfur dioxide and calcium. Alkalization dominates the processes in soil, since sulfur is adsorbed only in small quantities, and calcium is much better adsorbed. In addition to Ca, great amounts of Al, Fe, K, and Mg are accumulated in the humus layer due to air pollution. The heavy metal content has increased. The exchangeable content of heavy metals was in many cases much higher in polluted alkaline soils than i

The influence of periodic surfactant drip irrigation on the fate of petroleum pollutants in soil in arid regions.

Taking conventional sprinkler irrigation (SPI) as a control, this study explored the effect of drip irrigation (DRI) on the phytoremediation efficiency of petroleum-contaminated soil in arid areas. It investigated the migration and distribution of petroleum pollutants and water in the soil, plant physiological indicators, as well as the petroleum removal effect under the DRI. The results showed that compared with SPI, DRI could weaken the migration of petroleum to deep soil, enhance the absorption of petroleum pollutants by plant roots, and increase the biomass of ryegrass by 13.793%. In addit

Soil contamination and persistence of pollutants following organophosphate sprays and explosions to control red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea).

BACKGROUND: Red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea) are controlled at breeding colonies and roosts by organophosphate sprays or explosions. Contamination with organophosphates after sprays and with petroleum products and phthalates after explosions was assessed. RESULTS: Concentrations in soil of the organophosphate fenthion the day after sprays were uneven (0-29.5 µg g(-1)), which was attributable to excess depositions at vehicle turning points, incorrect positioning of nozzles and poor equipment maintenance. A laboratory study using field-collected samples provided an estimate of 47 days for the

Increased Production of Pathogenic, Airborne Fungal Spores upon Exposure of a Soil Mycobiota to Chlorinated Aromatic Hydrocarbon Pollutants.

Organic pollutants are omnipresent and can penetrate all environmental niches. We evaluated the hypothesis that short-term (acute) exposure to aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants could increase the potential for fungal virulence. Specifically, we analyzed whether pentachlorophenol and triclosan pollution results in the production of airborne fungal spores with greater virulence than those derived from an unpolluted (Control) condition. Each pollutant altered the composition of the community of airborne spores compared to the control, favoring an increase in strains with in vivo infection capacity

Evaluation of radioactive and heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil surrounding the lignite-fired thermal power plant using pollution indices.

Soil pollution caused by heavy metals negatively affects the environment and human health. However, the assessment of the environmental and ecological risks caused by heavy metals in agricultural soils in developing countries is limited. This study was carried out to determine heavy metal pollution and its possible sources in the agricultural lands surrounding the lignite-fired Afşin-Elbistan thermal power plant (TPP). A total of 52 soil samples were collected from the agricultural soils surrounding the TPP, and seven different heavy metal (U, Th, Ni, Fe, Cu, Cr and Zn) analyzes were performed

Microbial Communities of Seawater and Coastal Soil of Russian Arctic Region and Their Potential for Bioremediation from Hydrocarbon Pollutants.

The development of Arctic regions leads to pollution of marine and coastal environments with oil and petroleum products. The purpose of this work was to determine the diversity of microbial communities in seawater, as well as in littoral and coastal soil, and the potential ability of their members to degrade hydrocarbons degradation and to isolate oil-degrading bacteria. Using high-throughput sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, the dominance of bacteria in polar communities was shown, the proportion of archaea did not exceed 2% (of the total number of sequences in the libraries).

Humic substances, their microbial interactions and effects on biological transformations of organic pollutants in water and soil: A review.

Depicted as large polymers by the traditional model, humic substances (HS) tend to be considered resistant to biodegradation. However, HS should be regarded as supramolecular associations of rather small molecules. There is evidence that they can be degraded not only by aerobic but also by anaerobic bacteria. HS presence alters biological transformations of organic pollutants in water and soil. HS, including humin, have a great potential for an application in aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment as well as in bioremediation. Black carbon materials, including char (biochar) and activated

Cadmium pollution alters the priming effect of biochar application on soil organic carbon mineralization.

Biochar has high potential to reduce cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in polluted soils. While effective in Cd remediation, biochar amendment can stimulate native soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization via the priming effect, resulting in soil C release. However, it remains unclear whether Cd pollution alters the impact of biochar application on SOC mineralization, and how microbes modulate biochar-induced priming effect in Cd-polluted soils. To address these questions, a 120-day laboratory experiment was conducted by applying two types of biochar derived from C4 crop residues to C3 paddy soils

[Effects of Mercury Pollution on Soil Organic Carbon Stability and Carbon-fixing Microbial Communities].

To elucidate the effects of Hg pollution on soil organic carbon stability and autotrophic microbial carbon assimilation, the characteristics of soil CO2 emission rate, organic carbon components, and cbbL and cbbM functional microorganisms before and after 29 d of Hg pollution were studied using indoor culture experiments and molecular biology techniques. The results showed that the effects of different levels of Hg pollution on soil CO2 emission rates were different. High levels of Hg (S2,S3,and S5) inhibited soil CO2 cumulative emissions, whereas low levels of Hg (S1,S4,and S6) promoted soil

Bomb 137Cs in modern honey reveals a regional soil control on pollutant cycling by plants.

137Cs is a long-lived (30-year radioactive half-life) fission product dispersed globally by mid-20th century atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. Here we show that vegetation thousands of kilometers from testing sites continues to cycle 137Cs because it mimics potassium, and consequently, bees magnify this radionuclide in honey. There were no atmospheric weapons tests in the eastern United States, but most honey here has detectable 137Cs at >0.03 Bq kg-1, and in the southeastern U.S., activities can be >500 times higher. By measuring honey, we show regional patterns in the biogeochemical cycli

Exposure of Brazilian soil and groundwater to pollution by coccidiostats and antimicrobial agents used as growth promoters.

The World Health Organization has identified antimicrobial resistance as one of the most important threats to global health. Brazil is one of the world's leading meat producers and the Brazilian use of veterinary antimicrobials as therapeutic agents and prophylactic or growth promoters in animal production remains problematic. Many antimicrobials are not completely metabolized and their excretion represents a significant source of environmental exposure. The aim of this work was to estimate the exposure risk of soil and groundwater to pollution by growth promoters (GPs) and anticoccidial addit

Screening of wheat straw biochars for the remediation of soils polluted with Zn (II) and Cd (II).

The immobilization behaviors of Zn(II) and Cd(II) by wheat straw (WS) biochars could vary with the soil conditions. In the acidic environment, WS biochars produced at low temperature were more competent than those produced at high temperature on Zn(II) and Cd(II) immobilization; while WS biochars produced at high temperature were more effective than those produced at low temperature in the alkaline environment. The ions in the porewater could compromise the sorption capacities of Zn(II) and Cd(II) by WS biochars in acidic soils, while could enhance them in alkaline soils. For biochars produced

Antibiotic resistance marker genes as environmental pollutants in GMO-pristine agricultural soils in Austria.

Antibiotic resistance genes may be considered as environmental pollutants if anthropogenic emission and manipulations increase their prevalence above usually occurring background levels. The prevalence of aph(3')-IIa/nptII and aph(3')-IIIa/nptIII - frequent marker genes in plant biotechnology conferring resistance to certain aminoglycosides - was determined in Austrian soils from 100 maize and potato fields not yet exposed to but eligible for GMO crop cultivation. Total soil DNA extracts were analysed by nptII/nptIII-specific TaqMan real time PCR. Of all fields 6% were positive for nptII (medi
