Sphenoid bone hypoplasia is a skeletal phenotype of cleidocranial dysplasia in a mouse model and patients.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by heterozygous mutations in RUNX2. Affected individuals exhibit delayed maturation or hypoplasia in various bones, mainly including those formed by intramembranous ossification. Although several reports described deformation of the sphenoid bone in CCD patients, details of the associated changes have not been well documented. Most parts of the sphenoid bone are formed by endochondral ossification; however, the medial pterygoid process is formed by intramembranous ossification associated with secondary cartilage. We first i

[Monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoidal bone presenting with visual disturbance during pregnancy].

A case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia in the anterior skull base, which presented with visual disturbance during pregnancy, is reported. A 32-year-old female was referred to our department for examination of the progressing right visual disturbance in the third trimester of her second pregnancy. She had experienced the same episode in her first pregnancy, recovering from it after delivery. This time, however, the visual acuity did not change after delivery. Plain craniogram showed sclerotic changes in the right sphenoidal ridge and the right frontal skull base. CT scan showed an isodense mass

[Treatment of acromegaly by the surgical approach through the sphenoid bone. I. Clinical results].

Forty-five cases of pituitary adenomas with clinical characteristics of acromegaly treated surgically from an approach through the nose and sphenoid sinus are presented. After the operation the somatic features of acromegaly decreased in 66% of cases, headaches regressed in 88%, visual field defects disappeared in 20% of cases. Selective removal of pituitary microadenoma caused return of regular menstrual cycles in 12 women and in 3 of them successful pregnancy and labour resulted. In cases of extrasellar growth of the tumour no satisfactory clinical remission was obtained.

Impact of nasal septum deviation on the sphenoid bone pneumatization: a retrospective computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Deviated nasal septum (DNS) changes aerodynamic airflow pattern and increases nasal resistance that may affect paranasal sinus pneumatization. OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationships among DNS, sphenoid bone pneumatization and surrounding neurovascular structures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The paranasal sinus CT images of DNS patients (n = 100) and patients without DNS (n = 60) between 2020 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Sphenoid bone pneumatization and anterior clinoid processes (ACP) length were measured while surrounding neurovascular structure types were assessed. RESU

Brainatomy: A Novel Way of Teaching Sphenoid Bone Anatomy With a Simplified 3-Dimensional Model.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis and treatment of diseases at and around the sphenoid bone demands throughout understanding of its anatomy in 3-dimensional (3-D) space. However, despite the complex anatomic nature of the sphenoid bone, the current educational resources for its 3-D anatomy are insufficient for fast and long-term retention of the anatomic relationships. OBJECTIVE: To provide a simplified 3-D model of the sphenoid bone that anyone can easily learn and recall as an internal mental model. METHODS: Various studies on the anatomy of the sphenoid bone were analyzed. The collected data incl

Fracture of the coronoid process, sphenoid bone, zygoma, and zygomatic arch after a firearm injury.

A rare case of fracture of the coronoid process, sphenoid bone, zygoma, and zygomatic arch caused by a firearm is described. A 25-year-old man was hit in the face with a bullet, resulting in restricted mouth opening, difficulty chewing, and pain when opening the mouth. The clinical examination revealed a perforating wound in the right parotid region. A computed tomographic scan revealed a comminuted fracture of the left coronoid process with the bullet stopping in the intact left coronoid process. Treatment was bilateral coronoidectomy associated with speech therapy and was successful. Details

Four-dimensional digital subtraction angiography for exploration of intraosseous arteriovenous fistula in the sphenoid bone.

BACKGROUND: Intraosseous arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare clinical entity that typically presents with symptoms from their effect on surrounding structures. Here, we report a case of intraosseous AVF in the sphenoid bone that presented with bilateral abducens palsy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A previously healthy man presented with tinnitus for 1 month, and initial imaging suspected dural AVF of the cavernous sinus. Four-dimensional digital subtraction angiography (4D-DSA) imaging and a three-dimensional (3D) fused image from the bilateral external carotid arteries revealed that the shunt was in

Hyperostosing sphenoid wing meningiomas: surgical outcomes and strategy for bone resection and multidisciplinary orbital reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperostosing sphenoid wing meningiomas cause bony hyperostosis that may extend into the orbit, resulting in proptosis, restriction of extraocular movements, and/or compressive optic neuropathy. The extent of bony removal necessary and the optimal reconstruction strategy to prevent enophthalmos is debated. Herein, the authors present their surgical outcomes and reconstruction results. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 54 consecutive patients undergoing resection of sphenoid wing meningiomas associated with bony hyperostosis. The majority of cases were operated on by the se

A patient with an ectopic sphenoid bone TSH secretory adenoma: Case report and review of the literature.

Ectopic thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)oma located outside the sella turcica is exceedingly rare and can be associated with significant diagnostic delay. The clinical presentation depends on the anatomical location and size of the ectopic tumor and the degree of thyrotoxicosis. A 71-year-old woman presented with goiter and thyrotoxicosis. Initial investigations revealed elevated free thyroxine (fT4) and tri-iodothyronine (fT3) with inappropriately high-normal TSH. Assay interference was unlikely, pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was reported as "normal," and germline sequencin

A Rare Case of a Solid Variant Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Medial Sphenoid Bone: Clinical Features, Diagnostic Points, and Treatment.

A 5-year-old boy presented to our hospital with ptosis and an abnormal ocular position. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined mass measuring 20 mm in diameter in the medial sphenoid bone extending to the orbit and compressing the external ocular muscle. The patient underwent total surgical excision and was subsequently diagnosed with a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst via molecular integrated diagnosis. Solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst is an extremely rare subtype of aneurysmal bone cyst, accounting for 0.2% of all primary bone tumors. It is characterized by the absence of

Primary Intraosseous Meningioma of the Sphenoid-Temporal Bone with Single-Stage, 3D-Planned Cranioplasty: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraosseous meningiomas (PIM) are rare extradural tumors, representing less than 2% of all meningiomas. They are often slow-growing and may present with nonspecific radiological features, complicating diagnosis. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 48-year-old female with progressive left frontotemporal bulging over 12 months, without neurological deficits. Imaging revealed an osteoblastic lesion in the left sphenoid and temporal bones, causing mild compression of adjacent structures. The patient underwent craniectomy with complete tumor resection and immediate cranioplas

Metastatic Temporal Bone Tumor From Renal Cell Carcinoma Coexisting With Sphenoid Ridge Meningioma: A Case Report.

Metastatic renal cell carcinomas (RCC) of the skull are relatively rare. Here, we present a rare case of a skull tumor due to metastatic RCC coexisting with a sphenoid ridge meningioma. A 69-year-old man was followed up for a sphenoid ridge meningioma. He had undergone a laparoscopic right nephrectomy for RCC 10 years previously. He had a new tumor in the right temporal bone, which rapidly grew with bone destruction within a short period of five months. Both tumors had a common feeding artery, and embolization of the artery feeding the tumor was performed before tumor resection. Intraoperative

The role of the sphenoid bone in the connection between the temporal-mandible-tongue-hyoid system and the cervical spine.

The cranio-cervical-mandibular system is a functional complex whose understanding has evolved significantly, moving from a purely mechanical model to an integrated view that includes myofascial and postural interdependencies. Recent studies, particularly the work of Messina, have led to the definition of the Temporal-Mandible-Tongue-Hyoid (TMTH) system, a biomechanical unit in which the temporal bone acts as a fulcrum. This article aims to analyze the often-underestimated role of the sphenoid bone as a key element of anatomical and functional connection between the TMTH system and the upper ce

Exophthalmos and hemiheadache caused by osteoma in the greater wing of sphenoid bone: an extremely rare case report.

UNLABELLED: Osteoma is the most common benign tumor of the nose and paranasal sinuses. It is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed accidentally. In our case, the tumor formed in an unusual location and led to unexpected symptoms, which created a big challenge in diagnosis and treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman complained of hemiheadache, exophthalmos in the right eye, and limitation in lateral eye movements progressing to diplopia in the past 2 months. The physical examination of the rest systems was unremarkable. The radiological investigations revealed a hyperdense lesion arisin

Dosing interval adjustment of denosumab for the treatment of giant cell tumor of the sphenoid bone: A case report.

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB), the efficacy and safety of denosumab, a receptor activator nuclear factor κ-B ligand inhibitor, has previously been demonstrated, especially for unresectable tumors. One of the current issues in denosumab treatment for unresectable GCTB is whether it can be discontinued, or whether the dosage or the dosing interval can safely be adjusted, if discontinuation is not possible, to avoid the occurrence of side effects. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 15-year-old boy with diplopia was referred to our hospital after a space-occupying lesion in the

Endoscopic Removal of a Nasopharyngeal Foreign Body Stuck Within the Sphenoid Bone Using the Endonasal Transseptal Approach.

Nasopharyngeal foreign bodies (FBs), which are generally caused by a strong, external force, are seldomly encountered. Removing these FBs is challenging for otorhinolaryngological surgeons because of the vital structures surrounding the nasopharynx, such as the skull base, cranial nerves, and internal carotid artery. Here, the authors report the case of a 69-year-old man referred to our hospital after accidentally cutting his face while using a grinder. Grinder fragments were deeply embedded in the face, thus becoming nasopharyngeal FBs. The authors evaluated three-dimensional volume rendering
