Malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC) is a potentially devastating consequence of cancer. Early recognition of the signs and symptoms of MSCC can allow diagnosis prior to the development of irreversible complications. Information provision to patients and doctors regarding the risk of MSCC and a streamlined pathway for further investigation are both key to improving the outcome for patients developing this condition. Described in this paper is the development of such a pathway at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) has devastating consequences for the physical, social and vocational well-being of patients. The demographic of SCIs is shifting such that an increasing proportion of older individuals are being affected. Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event with high mortality and, among survivors, a high degree of morbidity due to both motor and sensory deficits. The damage that occurs with a SCI is recognized to be pathophysiologically biphasic: the initial insult to neural tissue can be followed by a secondary process of progressive ischemia that may worsen the severity of dysfunction. A case of isolated intradural spinal cord lipoma is presented. Most isolated spinal cord lipomas are intradural extramedullary, and the most common location is subpial.
