We report the observation of acid-fast Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts in a sputum sample. The patient, a 60 year-old, HIV negative man, was successfully treated for pulmonary tuberculosis during 1997. Samples of sputum were collected from ten patients with chronic respiratory diseases following treatment with Varidase (streptodornase and streptokinase) buccal tablets, four tablets per day for a period of seven days, and were compared with specimens obtained before the therapy in terms of rheological and cytochemical parameters. The study revealed a tendency for the respiratory secretion to show a lowered yield point and a decrease in mucous fibers after the therapy, thus suggesting, to some extent, the efficacy of the drug as an expectorant.

Sputum Gram stain was diagnostic for pulmonary strongyloidiasis in four patients from Tennessee with chronic obstructive lung disease treated with steroids. The case reports of these patients and photomicrographs of the larval forms by Gram stain are presented. Sputum Gram stain may be a useful procedure to screen for pulmonary strongyloidiasis in steroid-treated patients with chronic lung disease who come from an endemic area.

Two immune-compromised patients had pulmonary and intestinal infection due to Strongyloides stercoralis. Diagnosis was facilitated in both cases when the parasites were found in the sputum. Treatment with thiabendazole appeared to eradicate the infection, but repeated follow-up examinations are needed because of the likelihood of relapse.
