Antimicrobial agents in small animal dermatology for treating staphylococcal infections.

Antibiotic recommendations for treating skin infections have been published many times in the past 30 years. Prior to 2000, the recommendations focused on the use of β-lactam antibiotics, such as cephalosporins, amoxicillin-clavulanate, or β-lactamase stable penicillins. These agents are still recommended, and used, for wild-type methicillin-susceptible strains of Staphylococcus spp. However, since the mid-2000s there has been an increase in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus spp (MRSP). The increase among S pseudintermedius in animals coincided with the increase in methicillin-resistant S a

Coagulase-negative staphylococcal sternal wound infections after open heart operations.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci are commonly isolated from wounds of patients after median sternotomy; however, the epidemiology of these infections is poorly described and the morbidity, mortality, and cost of care remain undefined. METHODS: Retrospectively, we studied all patients with sternal wound infections attributable to coagulase-negative staphylococci after 22,180 open heart procedures performed at the Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1994 (84 months). In an assessment of potential risk factors for sternal wound infections caused by coagulase-ne

Biomaterial-associated staphylococcal peritoneal infections in a neutropaenic mouse model.

Adhesion of staphylococcal cells to polyethylene with end point-attached heparin was quantified by bioluminescence. Staphylococcus epidermidis 3380 and the slime-producing S. epidermidis RP12 adhered to the highest extent, and S. lugdunensis 2342 to the least extent. Preincubation of the polymer with dialysis fluid reduced adhesion of S. epidermidis 3380 and RP12 but enhanced that of S. aureus, and preadsorption of the surface with fibronectin decreased subsequent adhesion of S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus strains. When staphylococci were grown in the presence of a biomaterial their abilit

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections in an outpatient peritoneal dialysis program.

In view of the increasing concern about hospital-acquired methicillin resistance, we examined the sensitivities and outcome of staphylococcal infections related to outpatient peritoneal dialysis over a 5-year period. Data on all episodes of peritonitis (n = 360) and catheter infections (n = 507) were gathered prospectively from January 1984 to December 1988. The numbers of patients on peritoneal dialysis each year ranged from 136 in 1984 to 109 in 1987. Fifteen methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections (MRSI) related to outpatient peritoneal dialysis occurred. Three were due to methicill…

Clinical efficacy of cefonicid in the treatment of staphylococcal infections.

Cefonicid is a parenteral cephalosporin with a half-life of 4.5 hours, which permits once-daily dosing. The efficacy of cefonicid in the treatment of established staphylococcal infections was reviewed in all patients with infections due to staphylococci who were treated with cefonicid during the US clinical development program. Two hundred evaluable cases were identified, of which 95 had other pathogens as well. Cefonicid was clinically effective in 92% of skin and soft tissue infections, 74% of bone and joint infections, 83% of respiratory tract infections, and 95% of urinary tract infections…

Treatment of severe staphylococcal infections with a rifampicin-minocycline association.

During an outbreak, 25 severely impaired patients (mean age 62) presented with severe infections due to Staphylococcus aureus resistant to oxacillin and aminoglycosides. All strains were isolated in pure culture and diagnostic procedures included transtracheal puncture and bone biopsy. Median MICs were: oxacillin 50 mg/l, gentamicin 12.5 mg/l, tetracycline 25 gm/l, vancomycin 0.195 mg/l, rifampicin 0.097 mg/l and minocycline 0.195 mg/l. All patients were treated with rifampicin (600 mg/day) and minocycline (200 mg or 400 mg/day) administered together intravenously or orally bid. Mean duration

LINCOMYCIN AND STAPHYLOCOCCAL INFECTIONS: A CLINICAL STUDY OF 18 CASES.

Lincomycin, a chemically new antibiotic effective against Gram-positive organisms, was evaluated in vitro and tested clinically. In vitro testing indicated that lincomycin is especially effective against Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical testing showed that lincomycin was free of toxicity in a series of 18 cases of staphylococcal infection. Of particular interest was its pronounced effectiveness in nine cases of chronic osteomyelitis, one of which was of 15 years' duration and unresponsive to all other forms of antibiotic and surgical treatment. The only side effect noted was loose stools in the

Medical treatment of staphylococcal infective endocarditis.

Staphylococcal infective endocarditis is a severe event requiring aggressive therapy. Antibiotic regimen depends mainly on (1) the species of Staphylococcus (Staphylococcus aureus versus coagulase-negative staphylococci) and its resistance pattern (resistance to penicillin, to methicillin, to multiple classes of antibiotics); (2) the type of infected valve (native versus prosthetic); (3) the site of infection (left side versus right side endocarditis); (4) some underlying conditions of the host, in particular the presence or not of intravenous drug abuse. Based on in vitro susceptibility resul

A Novel Approach Targeting Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Infections: Rifabutin's Antibacterial Potential.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are opportunistic pathogens that pose a significant chal-lenge in healthcare settings, particularly among patients with indwelling medical devices. Their ability to form biofilms and exhibit resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, including methicillin, limits treatment options. The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant CoNS necessitates alternative therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of rifabutin against clinical isolates of CoNS, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus sap

[Role of staphylococcal infections in the occurrence of endemic Tunisian pemphigus].

Pemphigus is a severe autoimmune blistering disorder, in which immunoglobulin G autoantibodies are directed against desmosomal glycoproteins. The antibodies against desmogleine1 are prevalent in normal subjects living in Tunisia, that suggests the role of environment in the pathogenesis of this endemic type of pemphigus and the need for additional factors to switch from a subclinical form to a clinical form of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate explanatory environmental factors. We tested the hypothesis that normal subjects whom presented staphylococcal infections have antib…
